I just finished watching Shogun Steel

And I can definitely say that I enjoyed it for what it was. I can also say that I understand why it’s the more ignored/disliked of the four metal season.

I think the main problem with it was that it just didn’t have the time to be as good as it could’ve been. They introduced a lot of good characters, interesting ideas, and had the potential to make an excellent season if they could just flush those ideas out more.

There was only like 26 episodes for Shogun Steel and that wasn’t nearly enough for the things that they wanted to do with it. If it had gotten another season, things might’ve been better but I still doubt it. Metal Fury, while absolutely amazing, faced a similar problem, in my opinion. Metal Fusion and Metal Masters weren’t without their flaws and issues but they had the time to completely flesh out the ideas and concepts that they presented. Each character had a level of depth to them and we saw their growth as time went on. Shogun Steel could’ve been just as good as the trilogy if they just had more time to develop things.

I could honestly go on and on about my opinions on the metal fight saga and I could probably write a thirty page essay on my thoughts about Shogun Steel (what makes it work and what doesn’t) and I may actually write that out some day but this is good enough for now.

I’m not a great writer, I wouldn’t even say I’m particularly good, but i am super tempted to rewrite Shogun Steel from episode one to episode twenty-six and change the things that bothered me, go more in depth on ideas presented but never really touched on, and “fix” it to a version that better suits my vision of what could’ve been.

We’ll have to see about that one, though.
