AREN’T THEY JUST AN ANGEL 🥺🥺 Shuumei, along with One Year, has a very special place in my heart and I’m really excited with how they’ve taken shape. I don’t have much to offer with them at the moment (there’s a lot of One Year plans but not much ready yet) but I do have this drabble of Muichiro and baby Shuumei to add here 🩵

“Do you want to hold them?”

Muichiro looks up to Sanemi slowly, caught off guard by the offer. Between the three of them (he, Sanemi and Giyuu), Muichiro has said the least between Shuumei’s delivery and now. He’s happy, don’t get him wrong! He smiled in relief seeing her healthy and seeing his parents just as well off. He held her little hand and fought the urge to kiss her little head, but only because it could get her sick. He’s already made a million promises to keep her safe and rip heaven and earth apart if her happiness if ever threatened. He already loves her dearly.

He just didn’t think he’d actually get to hold her.

For a moment, he wonders if he should with only one hand to support her with. But Giyuu doesn’t even have an arm like he does and he’s been holding her for hours (it’s actually kind of a miracle Muichiro has this opportunity with how protective he’s been…). He doesn’t need to say no and he doesn’t really want to, so…

He nods slowly, holding Sanemi’s eyes until he actually leans down to give her to him. It catches him off guard again and he scrambles to position his arms correctly. His inexperience is obvious in how high he holds his elbow, nothing at all like how Sanemi is when he holds her, but Sanemi corrects that with a gentle nudge to his arm. Neither say a word and Sanemi doesn’t hand her over until Muichiro nods again. With bated breath, he waits to hold Shuumei.

And suddenly, she’s in his arms.

She’s shockingly light though she’s a little over 3 kilograms. Muichiro was told was healthy and normal, but he’s still frightened by the inherent weakness of it. This child can’t even hold her head up, much less do anything for herself. She’ll be relying solely on Sanemi, Giyuu and Muichiro to protect her. Her life will be in their hands.

Her little face scrunches up into a yawn, the tiniest squeak emitting from her little throat before settling back asleep. Muichiro swears his heart skipped a beat. Her tongue is a hilariously vibrant shade of red that makes him blink and then smile. He’s picked up on one of her notable quirks already. She’s so new to this world but she’s already taking shape. She’s already a whole person.

His arm gets tired embarrassingly fast but he doesn’t dare move. Shuumei is sound asleep and he won’t do anything to disturb that. That feeling of devotion and love he felt just seeing them for the first time only intensifies having her so close. It’s startling how easy it is to love someone this fiercely, especially when he’s only had her for a little over a day, but it’s true. God forbid when the day comes this child starts asking for things, Muichiro knows he’ll have a hard time ever saying no.

Yuichiro must’ve been a much stronger soul than him, he thinks with a jolt.

It’s not the first time he’s thought of his brother through this experience, but it’s the first time he’s thought about him today.

Muichiro accepted his brother’s harshness as a form of love a long time ago. He knows Yuichiro was scared of what would become of them and it hurts to know that fear was never unfounded. He has no doubt Yuichiro loved him, he has no doubt every sharp word and poisonous argument was forced out of him with fear as well as love. However, Muichiro knows he’ll never have that strength. He knows now that he could never look Shuumei in the eyes and call her weak. He couldn’t be like Yuichiro, he just couldn’t.

A tear slips down his face. He didn’t even know his eyes had welled up in the first place.

If he won’t model himself after Yuichiro, then what kind of big brother will he be? He’s never been in this position before. He doesn’t know what to do or how to take care of Shuumei the way she deserves. Even if Yuichiro wasn’t perfect, he left an important impression on Muichiro. He’s still his precious twin. Will Muichiro be able to do that too? What will he become?

Rather suddenly, Shuumei wakes up with a fussy whine that breaks into a tiny, very tired cry which makes Muichiro jump. Unfortunately, that only frustrates her more, so she cries even louder. Giyuu and Sanemi are alerted to this instantly from the other side of the room. They don’t get up but Giyuu calls out to him and asks, “Are you okay? Do we need to get her?”

Muichiro shakes his head but doesn’t spare a glance to them. He’s completely focused on Shuumei. Gently, he starts to bounce her up and down in an attempt to calm her back down again. It barely works, the poor baby still cries, but she slows down enough for their ears to rest. Eventually she’s just whining, and Muichiro can deal with that.

“No,” he tells them happily, “I got it.”

Whatever big brother he’ll be, he knows he’ll be the very best for his little Shuumei.

Inspired Material: Part of an AU postcanon of the fic One Year by @belovedmuichiro . Base premise for the fic is that Muichiro survived the final battle and Giyuu took him under his wing, then roped Sanemi into staying with them both for one year to hopefully resolve past conflicts. Sanemi almost didn't stay because of guilt towards the idea of accepting his role in a new happiness when his brother couldn't join him. Shuumei exists in a version of this story where Giyuu proposes to Sanemi with a windflower around a year after Sanemi decides to stay with the family for good. After being together through uncertain times, he relates Sanemi to the seedlings of windflowers, the white puffs that float away just to root where you'll never find them again. Luckily, his seed puff rooted exactly where he wanted. Shuumei is the child they keep despite having uncertainty over the slayer mark curses at first. When the parents outlived the curse, they felt more at peace with their decision, as Muichiro had agreed to look after Shuumei in the instance the curse did take them.

Where did Shuumei come from?: They tell her she came from a seed puff they put in a cradle until she grew into a happy baby. How Shuumei actually got here is a secret only the gods will know.

General: Despite her parents, Shuumei is a very happy person. They enjoy nature and being outdoors, but struggled to relate to others. Being the baby of the family meant Shuumei was always loved, but they didn't have many peers their own age and the ones who were didn't live nearby. Tengen's baby was one such case.

Though Shuumei grew well supported by loving people, they always noticed the physical disabilities and mental scarring caused by demons. Shuumei never grew up in a world with demons, and carries guilt over not fully understanding the strain her loved ones still live with. Especially since she's so curious about demons and the more human angle of their conditions. Though Urokodaki will sometimes tell her stories, her immediate family is way more tight lipped. To her it seems whatever horror they lived through, they would rather let die with their generation.

Despite their secrecy, Shuumei is constantly asking for more stories from anyone who will give them to her, especially about a world with demons and what they were like. Anything beyond the surface answers of "Dangerous" or "Evil". Demons became a fixation for them as they feel that understanding demons will help understand their family's pain.

As Shuumei reached 19 years old, Muichiro settled fully into his adult life and moved away from the family home, though he originally stayed nearby. This left Shuumei feeling even more alone, as the person closest to her had gone away. Shuumei doesn't want to be ungrateful for his happiness, but they don't want to feel isolated either. Especially since they haven't figured out a very strong path for their own life, something all of their family members seem to have figured out and even became passionate about.

There was a time while Shuumei was young that her parents considered teaching her how to fight like slayers, but Urokodaki convinced them not to. He hoped he would die in a peaceful world, and putting fear into a child over something that wasn't around anymore wasn't fair. Everyone in Shuumei's life seems very touchy about the topic, but Auntie Nezuko says a lot more than her tight lipped family will. Even though Nezuko and her wife Kanao are working to raise their adopted daughter, they are much more honest about the past.

Tanjiro tried to answer her questions once or twice but he's bad at keeping secrets so he gets scolded a lot. He's also just very busy with his family and helping out the neighbors that his time is too scarce for private conversations. Relationship to Parents: Shuumei is Giyuu's very precious baby. While at first he didn't think he would care very much, the anxiety of the slayer mark curse made it hard not to invest as much of himself as he could into Shuumei before a possible demise. He was reminded of his sister's love for him and he vowed to watch over Shuumei in a similar fashion to how Tsutako did for him. It was hard for him to trust others, including Sanemi, with such a fragile life so he rarely let anyone else hold his baby.

Of the parents, Giyuu understands Shuumei much better than Sanemi does, but that doesn't mean Sanemi doesn't also have a bond with her. Though he does often play the bad cop parent. That's not to say Giyuu isn't strict, only to say that Shuumei's rarely clashes enough with him to bring it out.

Sanemi, being something of a family man, was already expecting the responsibility of a child, but Shuumei was a very strange one. Shuumei often tried to eat everything they definitely shouldn't, so he views them as something of a rascal. Especially with how they inherited his stubbornness and he taught her to take the piss out of people (entirely unintentionally.) Their play fighting strengthens their bonds, and Muichiro helps Shuumei to harass Sanemi. Though they play wrestled a lot when Shuumei was young, they were always humbled very quickly when they got too confident.

Relationship to Muichiro: Muichiro adores Shuumei, as when they were born, he realized how his own brother must have felt about him. To have a sibling you look after is a task filled with love, and often stress. Though he could never understand reenacting Yuichiro's bitterness, so he vowed to never be like that to Shuumei, even if he did understand his brother's behavior. He hopes that his brother doesn't think he abandoned his memory by appreciating his new sibling, but he knows in his heart that Yuichiro and his parents would want him to be happy.

Because of his own mission for happiness, Muichiro spent a lot of time with Shuumei and taught them about the clouds and birds, which fostered Shuumei's love for nature. Shuumei still doesn't know why Muichiro doesn't like fish very much. When eating dried fish as snacks, he always bites the heads off first. She's adopted the habit even though she doesn't like dried fish very much.

I’ve heard this theory before!! It honestly breaks my heart to imagine that could be true 😭 but in this little canon divergence I’ve written, Tsutako would probably die within the next month while Shizu wouldn’t become a demon for another few years (I imagine 2 or 3). I’ve definitely considered that angle though but it’s too heart breaking 😩😩

I saw a post once that entertained the idea of Tsutako being in the background of Sanemi’s hometown in the anime, and it got me thinking about a sanegiyuu childhood meet cute.

…

- When Giyuu was 13, he took a trip with Tsutako to a neighboring city where her fiancé had come from

- Though Giyuu was a much friendlier person as a child, he was still quiet, reserved and nervous. As a result, being in a bigger city was overwhelming and he struggled to keep up with Tsutako as they walked

- Before they could reach her fiancé’s home, Giyuu was separated from her in a crowd

- Without any people skills to speak of or the confidence to ask for help, Giyuu let the crowd swallow him up until he found a small spot he could cower in

- He ended up hiding under the stairs of a shrine where nobody could see him. He cried so quietly, nobody could possibly hear him either, but a boy did miraculously find him

- The boy was strikingly beautiful with stark white hair and piercing eyes. His presence made Giyuu stop crying almost immediately, but only because he was mesmerized.

- When the boy spoke, he was blunt and sort of rude but Giyuu hung onto every word he said as if he was a kind spirit come to save him

- “You cry like my little siblings,” he observed. It was a simple, random sort of thing to say but it perplexed Giyuu so much that he didn’t cry any longer

- Giyuu learned that this particular shrine is where the boy would find one of his brothers hiding, so when he saw Giyuu curled up, he thought something might’ve happened to him

- Giyuu reluctantly explained he was separated from Tsutako while visiting. In truth, he wasn’t sure if he should trust a stranger but they were clearly of a similar age and that put him at ease compared to an adult

- The boy gave Giyuu a small canteen of water before they could continue because the crying had obviously overwhelmed him. He then asked for the fiancé’s name, which he scowled upon hearing, surprisingly knowing the person

- “Is that bad?” Giyuu nervously asked

- “He’s one of the sons of our landlord,” the boy explained, “He’s fine. His family’s a buncha dicks.”

- Profanities aside, Giyuu asked if he could lead him there, and the boy agreed

- “What did his family do?” Giyuu asked on the way

- “Their kid brother said some shit about my family bein’ too big and my brother got into a fight with him about it.”

- “How big is your family?”

- “Nine of us. I have six siblings.”

- Giyuu learned that his mother had just given birth, which prompted the rude comment from their landlord’s son. He also had a father who he didn’t want to talk about on account of him angering some violent people

- Though the boy didn’t seem terribly interested in prying into Giyuu’s life, he still asked, “What about you?”

- “I just have my sister. My parents died when I was young.”

- “Lucky you have a sister.”

- “Yes… I’m Giyuu, by the way.”

- For a moment, the boy looked hesitant to give anymore details about himself, but must’ve decided he doesn’t have much to lose.

- “Sanemi.”

- On the way to the landlord’s home, it began to rain so Sanemi pulled Giyuu aside near a food stall to wait it out.

- Giyuu, as luck would have it, did have a small amount of money on him and suggested they share a meal.

- Sanemi agreed, not letting on that he rarely has enough money to ever eat out. However, Giyuu became curious when Sanemi awkwardly held his food at his side and wouldn’t take a bite.

- He didnt want to admit it, but his plan was to pocket whatever Giyuu bought him to bring home to his family. He wasn’t going to tell Giyuu, but the boy’s earnest, honest face pulled it out of him

- In response, Giyuu bought him another and asked that he feed himself as well

- When Sanemi finally did eat, Giyuu smiled for the first time. It flustered Sanemi, who quickly learned he couldn’t handle a pretty face

- When the rain ended, people came flooding to the streets in overwhelming numbers that scared Giyuu again

- To reassure him, Sanemi grabbed his hand and returned his earlier smile, promising he’ll be okay as long as they stick together

- Giyuu took to Sanemi with awe. The crowd was still scary, but Giyuu grounded himself in the feeling of his companion’s hand and trusted his word.

- Eventually they did find themselves at the landlord’s house. Most of the family was out looking for Giyuu, but luckily Tsutako stayed and was there to greet him.

- This was also a relief to Sanemi, who wasn’t sure he would be able to resist driving his fist into the face of the boy who fought with Genya

- Sanemi intended to leave with no commotion, just an odd empty feeling at the notion of leaving his new acquaintance, but Giyuu stopped him

- “Thank you for helping me,” he said with much more confidence than the first time he spoke. “You’re very kind, Sanemi.”

- Sanemi, flustered, shrugged and promised it was no problem. “Couldn’t just leave ya there…”

- “Maybe we’ll see each other again.”

- When Giyuu said this, he held onto the hope that because Tsutako new husband had close ties to Sanemi’s, they would surely meet again one day

- It was hard to explain but Giyuu felt drawn to Sanemi, like he was a special person he was meant to meet

- Of course, he couldn’t predict the tragedy that would befall both of them

- Years later, long after Tsutako and the Shinazugawa family were murdered, Sanemi was welcomed into the Hashira and finally met Giyuu again

- Only this time, he was quiet and cold. He didn’t give any indication that he remembered Sanemi and didn’t have any of the kindness he was full of as a child. Sanemi decided that he must’ve turned into a conceited ass with no time for the little people, he probably didn’t even remember him.

- But it was impossible for Giyuu to forget who Sanemi was. Even under all the scars and curses, he was still the boy who saved him that day. But Giyuu knew they had fundamentally changed as people, and clearly Sanemi wanted nothing to do with him any longer

- Unfortunately for them, the draw remains there no matter how far apart they try to drift.

#I don’t think Giyuu would hold it against the Shinazugawa family in the slightest #since demons are complicated and unpredictable #but I think Sanemi would carry the burden and distance himself from Giyuu #much to think about….
