so this is an insane post to be making. but happy one year to batman v? oh my god

i know i haven't posted like.. that much. this blog has only been around for a few months and we're just getting started now, but i came up with the first concept for this au on january 1st while talking to a friend about batman and it just ... has not left my brain. i have written over 40k words for this by now and. wow

before batman v i had never completed a long-form plotline even halfway through and now i'm working on the ending of the first arc. so that's Neat huh

idk if it's weird to celebrate the anniversary of my batman au. it probably is. but this silly little thing has been really special to me the past year so FUCK cringe happy birthday batman v, here's to another... however long it takes me to finish this, and thanks everyone whos been here so far. happy new year and i hope you enjoy the ride :)

our plot begins on edward's doorstep! i'm still trying to figure out how i want to format all of this so um... bare with me! but this is what i'm doing for now because i don't have the patience for comics. story introduction below !!

after the world ended (not actually; although gotham had collapsed into ruin, the rest of the world was quite content ignoring their existence. let the city eat itself alive, they reasoned, and the problem would solve itself.) edward found himself incredibly, mind-numbingly bored. with everyone making chaos and scrambling for power, there’s no audience to his crime, and no payoff. money is obsolete, he already has all the power he needs with essentially a monopoly on tech and repair, and there’s no thrill of the chase without a functioning gcpd. he needs someone to BOTHER.

and who better than his old friend (read: guy who wants him dead) jonathan crane to bother while everything else goes to shit! so he heads over to jonathan's last known residence and proposes an alliance. jon tells him where he can stick it, and slams the door in his face.

then, about a week later, jonathan's entire laboratory is blown sky-high. jon has no idea who did it, (a lot of people hate him enough for that) and if ed has a clue he's not going to say a word. but nonetheless jonathan is now homeless and in dire straits! all of his supplies were destroyed, half of his work didn't make it out of the fire, and they're having a pretty bad goddamn day, alright, so their judgement isn't the greatest right now!

his first thought is the sirens. ivy is pretty much his only friend in gotham, but the sirens are at full occupancy right now with plenty of their own problems to solve, and jon knows ivy: she'll just tell him to suck it up and figure it out

again, no one else in the city likes him, so he's pretty much out of luck. until he remembers a... certain someone. and jon hates the idea. he really, really hates it. but they're down on their luck and if they want a chance at finding their footing and saving what's left of their hard work, they need a place to stay, and fast.

so he shows up covered in ash on edward nygma's doorstep, to request a second chance at that offer. edward laughs in his face, obviously, but lets him in nonetheless! he reasons that he could use the entertainment around the house, anyway.

neither of them have any idea what they're getting themselves into, but don't worry! the horrors are just around the corner <3

ALRIGHT last ref for a bit🎉 had every possible technical difficulty during the process of this so it's a little rough. stuff below the cut, some warnings for child abuse and mentions of drugs! be safe!

jonathan's childhood is.... a lot. this is definitely an oversimplification, but i'll get into it more later on!

his father wanted a son. that was all he wanted

first, he had a daughter. then, nearly a decade later, jonathan was born. but everyone told him something was wrong with his child, that he was a changeling, or the antichrist. really jon just.. didn’t express things. never smiled or cried, rarely spoke until it was beaten out of him. jon's father resolved to make him a man. the boy was scared of his own shadow! what scared jonathan most, though, was the scarecrow in their field. it always just watched.

one night, jonathan's mother disappeared without a trace, to escape her husband. jon's older sister followed suit, refusing to take her mother's place, and leaving jonathan alone with his father.

and, when he was 16, jonathan snapped. this is an event that... probably requires its own post to do it justice lol. but with this they had begun to conquer their fear, and everyone left them alone afterward!

jonathan applied to every college he could, desperate to get out, and when he was 19 he moved across the country to study medicine at gotham u. there, he met pamela isley, soon to be his first and only friend.

later, jonathan switched to psychology instead, and moved in with pam. life was good for once. money, however, was not, and with jonathan's knowledge of chemistry he... created and sold some things to get by! gotta pay the bills somehow!

eventually they both graduated and lost touch. jon got a job as a psychologist in training under a professional, but the times he got to work one on one with patients were where he really... flourished

jonathan had been intrigued by fear for a long time, and now he could explore that. they just asked questions at first, but he wasn't getting the answers he wanted. they needed to SEE the fear firsthand! so he took to scaring them himself, bringing spiders and needles into the office under the guise of exposure. until that was no longer enough, and they turn to their past explorations of chemistry. if they could create something to stimulate fear, they could study it as much as they wanted!

until he's fired for mistreatment of patients. lmao

jon once again turned to his Chemical Experiments to make a living. but their creation (fear toxin, they later name it) had made its way into their head, and they became obsessed with perfecting it. the drug tears through the streets of gotham like wildfire. and, hey, if he uses his own drugs to test them, that's fine. he's fine! this won't be a problem!

and, as jon's reputation grows, they begin to call him the scarecrow. he likes the sound of that. the master of fear.

so, with that, all four of our main characters are free to unleash hell on gotham city :) i'm sure nothing else bad will happen to them! !

next up is this guy!!! i went through...several cords trying to get my tablet to connect while i worked on this but here he is nonetheless! info below the cut once again

edward's parents wanted a daughter who was polite, patient, and well-behaved; someone to carry on their (so-called) respectable lineage. instead, they got a rude, loud-mouthed, and shockingly brilliant little girl who made it very clear he wouldn't be controlled.

it was clear from the start that school was... not for him. he was loud and inattentive, a smartass with no filter. a born problem child! but he wasn't trying to be troublesome; he just didn't understand. people, he would later learn, were just like puzzles. but this was one he couldn't solve yet.

in 6th grade he told his mom he was a boy; she told him he was being ridiculous and thought that'd be the end of it. eddie nashton, having named himself that day, felt otherwise. so he cut his hair and quit trying to please people. they thought he was obnoxious? good! they're all just jealous!

school was hell, between bullies and his own, rapidly declining mental health, but he bore it with a grin and eventually got out with a 4.0 gpa and a fuck-you to everyone. he changed his name to Edward Nygma, and vanished.

life on his own was... not easy, but eventually he scraped enough money together for his own place. then, his time was spent devouring every bit of news about the wave of heists that was hitting gotham, before supercrime was in fashion.

ed becomes obsessed with these crimes, how they were executed and, more importantly, how they failed. the criminals ALWAYS got caught! if they did it like this, they could've gotten away with it! then he thinks: hey, if i did it like this, i could get away with it! so, to prove how dumb these criminals are and because he's broke edward plans a heist.

it goes perfectly, until he's walking out the door. he knows he's done everything right but his head screams that he's going to be caught, unless he leaves something behind on purpose. so he scrawls a riddle on the floor and books it!!

they don't catch him. he'd left a CLUE, and those idiots still failed! with his ego in the stratosphere, he tries again! and again, and again, each time leaving a clue behind. the riddler hits the newspapers and, while he finds the name a bit silly, it's a kind of attention he didn't know he'd been dying for.

he upsizes. his crimes get more elaborate, until he's living in an apartment 2x the size, and everyone has heard the riddler's name. then he slips up, and the cops show up during his next exploit. he panics, takes a hostage, and sets off on a grandiose speech about how they're all BUGS, insignificant compared to the enigma. this buys him time to flee!

he tries to lay low, and finds he can't stop himself. he goes mad with the tedium of regular life, fearing he'll lose his mind if he doesn't do something.

so the riddler returns full-force, evolved into much more than a petty robber, and much more than anyone ever expected of him.

another ref finished 🎉 i'm visiting family right now but ummm batman:) so here's harley my best friend. info(dump) below the cut as usual <3

harley quinzel was born new jersey, but outside of gotham, to a mother who never wanted a child and a father who left shortly after finding out his girlfriend was pregnant. by the time harley was nine her mother had given up on living altogether.

she takes a job at a travelling carnival one summer, and meets a boy named jack, who never stops smiling even when he gets his teeth kicked in for it. harley promises to protect him, but eventually the carnival has to leave, and they're torn apart. more on that later !

then harley's mom dies. six months later he packs up and disappears; off to gotham university. she's going to be a psychiatrist, for people like their mother, like jack, like them.

their first job is at arkham asylum— infamous for "dangerous psychopaths" the real danger lies in arkham's institution. for every good doctor there's five who don't care, and he begins to lose heart.

then she meets a nurse named pamela isley. they become fast friends despite everything, and make the suffering of arkham just a little more tolerable. then, pamela is arrested ! and yet another person harley cares about is ripped away from them!

one day, a shipment of blackgate inmates is sent to arkham. overflow, they say. a fight breaks out between them, and in the center of it, miraculously, is jack: flat on his back under someone's boot, bleeding from the nose and grinning.

one thing leads to another, and harley breaks him out of arkham. she gets fired and jack feels really bad, but hey, now they have plenty of time to hang out! he just has to do this one thing first, a job for his new boss. unless... harley wants to help?

and she would do anything for jack. of course she says yes. and it's always just one more job, with no end in sight. and, truthfully, harley's spent his entire life doing good for other people. maybe he wants to do something selfish, for once. so they keep going

then, of course, you know how the story goes; a bat, a red hood, and a soon-to-be condemned chemical plant. jack dies, and something else is born. following close behind is the faithful harlequin.

FINALLY finished my first ref of the 4 i have planned right now !! meet ivy the loml. infodump about her below the cut

pamela always had a certain Connection to the world since she was young, enough for other people to pick up on it. when her mother got sick it was a perfect way for scientists to exploit the tragedy and convince pam's father to let them experiment on her. they didn't mean to turn her into a walking bioweapon but... hey, why not!

after her escape from captivity (and the accidental death of her father) pamela ended up on the streets of gotham, where she met other kids like selina kyle, who were in about as dire straits as she. pam tried to suppress her newfound powers but as it turns out it's pretty hard to tune out the unique frequency of every single living thing in a fifty mile radius. so xe learned to live with it!

after years of watching people suffer-- her mother, other people living like her in gotham, even herself-- she decides to become a doctor, if only to prove to herself that there's at least One good doctor out there. in college she meets jonathan crane, and they click instantly! they're completely inseparable.

until...they're not, and both of them graduate and go on to live their respective lives; pamela as a nurse in the arkham asylum infirmary, and jonathan... god knows where.

the infirmary is a miserable place, full of more sick and suffering people than xe could've imagined. but it's also where xe meets harleen quinzel, a psychiatrist in training. arkham is awful but these two find solace in each other, if only in brief moments they can spare to talk between work.

but pamela isn't satisfied. she can feel the city dying, and it's driving her mad. she has to do something. someone has to pay for all of that suffering.

six months later, pamela isley is arrested and charged with ecoterrorism! she is suspended from arkham and imprisoned in blackgate penitentiary, which she escapes from within a week. and poison ivy officially becomes the next terror of the citizens of gotham city !

i've been thinking abt my au joker for a bit and wanted to draw him to get a better grip on their design (since i came up with a concept back in january and haven't touched them since 💀) joker isn't really... in the current plotline. whatsoever. but i think they're neat

ivy and jon met in college about 18 years before the plot starts (ages 18 and 19 respectively) they were both like, intense and unsettling and as traumatized gay people do they kind of gravitated towards each other. jonathan broke his pen one time and asked pamela if he could borrow one and they just kind of ... never stopped talking. they've been inseperable since

jon was ivy's first friend not made out of neccessity, and pam was jonathan's first friend period. they are absolutely ride or die for each other.

they moved in together after a year to split rent, and despite still being Incredibly fucked up it was both of their first taste of normal life. or as normal as gotham can be idk. living the queer codependent best friends lifestyle !!! something almost like happiness

jonathan did sell drugs out of their apartment for a few months to make ends meet but that Definitely has no impact on his future later! haha! anyway

then they graduated! jon got a job in psychiatry and moved out; ivy stayed and took a job at arkham in the infirmary, where she meets harley. and while pam became more bitter and jaded at the horrible things she witnessed in arkham, jonathan got fired for tormenting a patient, spiralled completely into his obsession with fear and created the first version of his fear toxin. he was arrested and sent to blackgate (and then arkham a week later), then 6 months later ivy was arrested for blowing up a factory, and sent to blackgate.

they didnt speak for the next year and a half. jon continued to isolate himself and spiral, landing himself in arkham once or twice a month at a certain point, while pam got unhealthily fixated on taking down the corrupt in gotham, getting herself into her own fair share of trouble. both of them get to a breaking point around the same time-- forced to face their own actions and the consequences they bring.

so pamela escapes prison again and decides to lay low: gets an apartment under a fake name, and begins to plan her next operations more carefully. somewhere along the way harley moves in with her (after being ditched and left to fend for herself by the joker) and things are Okay !

jonathan's road to recovery (if you can really call it that he's still fucked up and crazy) is a little more explosive and insane but he ends up on ivy's doorstep, dripping wet and covered in blood, and asks to come in. despite everything she lets him stay! (i've written a fic for this that i'll share sometime if i can figure out how 💔)

and they've been keeping each other alive for the 15 years since! they're mean as hell to each other but also they would do anything for eachother. never underestimate the bond betw two fucked up and evil gay people

yeah i love these two so much . most annoying best friends ever !!!!!
