This was the latest one that joined the ever increasing collection of Laphroaig. For most it is either a love or a hate story. This is aged initially in American oak and then in quarter casks before a final finishing period in ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. The whisky is a perfect blend of rich peat and sweetness of sherry. Tasting notes Nose: Peat smoke upfront with traditional Laphroaig iodine, medicinal and phenolic notes blending beautifully with the sweet sherry. Red fruits, plum cake, raisins and just a hint of sea salt evident in the nose before spicier elements emerge. Cinnamon, currants, leather and raisins are evident on the nose. Upon adding a splash of water, the characters of the sherry open up and the peat, though ever present, takes a back seat. Sea salt and tobacco also come out on the nose. Palate: Swetness from the sherry, sea salt, raisins and notes of spices like cinnamon and anise. Smokiness on the palate and medicinal taste with fresh cut grass notes are prominent too. Finish: Long and lingering finish with a drying mouthfeel. A perfect blend of spice, smoke, salt and sweetness. A special occasion called for a special dram last evening. With the winters setting in, what more could be more soothing than this beauty of a drink :) Nose: true to its style, medicinal peat notes up front, it also exhibits sweetness of a chocolate, crisp citrusy notes and mild notes of barley Palate: Surprisingly its fresh cut fruits like apples and citrusy notes that come out first. Mild chocolate is also something that I could feel. The peat is ever present but it takes a backseat. Towards the end, it also exhibits mild spicy notes on the palate. Finish: Warm, mild spice and peat. Probably one of the variants that could definitely help people like Islay whisky's if that's something they have not wanted to try earlier due to the heavy peatiness.
