may roundup!!
happy june!! here are some things i saw and liked in may. as always titles in bold are the ones i'd especially recommend but they're all good:
monster is a phenomenal film i have got to see again. it plays with your idea of what's going on so well, showing you the same story from different perspectives and slowly revealing more information each time. been thinking about it a lot. really good
monkey man is an action movie i had a hell of a time with. yeah there are parts of it that are somewhat flawed but it's so distinct from other action movies i have seen and so well directed i'm willing to look past pretty much anything
fallen leaves is a lovely little romcom that caught me off guard with how much i ended up enjoying it! tone works perfectly and really captures how weird the world feels sometimes. strongly recommend
the book of clarence seems to be a bit hit or miss with people but i had a really good time. main character is a complete loser. score is fantastic. there's a chariot race with mary magdalene and a dance number mid-movie. a sort of biblical epic that's so much fun. also one of the funniest uses of benedict cumberbatch in a movie i think i've ever seen
and finally this blog is basically a la chimera fan blog now but i cannot stress enough how much i adored that movie and if i'd been able to go for a fourth time i would've. i can't fault it. every time i left the theatre i was overwhelmed by the compulsion to go do it again
some honorable mentions for other movies: the fall guy is a silly good time, whiplash is really good, challengers is challengers and it's very good, and civil war is an incredibly well made and also incredibly stressful film that seems pretty divisive but that i largely enjoyed watching (i haven't had time to really consider how i feel about its general messaging, but you know. kirsten dunst and cailee spaeny are fantastic)
