By Christmas morning, Bucky woke Maggie with the sound of the closet door opening. He winced, hating that he had made any noise at all, nearly ruining the surprise he had in mind.
When he saw her stirring in bed, he hurriedly grabbed the two small, wrapped gifts from where he hid them behind their clothes and was back in bed before she lifted her head from the pillow. The mattress shook slightly on its old springs.
The smile on Buckyâs face was mischievous as he watched her wake. His hand slid along her bare hip to pull her closer to him. âGood morning, beautiful,â he told her. He was feeling a lot more affectionate this morning, possibly because it was Christmas or perhaps it was that Maggie drew out a side of Bucky that even he hardly recognized.Â
âMm, good morning, handsome,â she said with a sleepy smile.Â

Bucky pulled on his jacket to conceal his arm before dealing with whoever was knocking. His glove was put on in a hurry too as he cast a concerned look towards Maggie before heading for the door. The only one that knew he was here was the landlord and his daughter.
But when the door was pulled open, Bucky realized what had happened. The landlordâs daughter had talked.
âBucky!â The woman standing there, fidgeting with her nails, threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly before she pulled back to gasp at him. âWe all thought you were dead! I had to come see you in the flesh!â
Maggieâs arms crossed over her chest and her face pinched in annoyance as she watched this woman throw herself at him. Her mood instantly soured at the sight and her stomach began to twist uncomfortably with jealousy.
Maggie couldnât help it when she let out a quiet scoff, letting her annoyance be known.
Bucky was wholly uncomfortable and winced as he very carefully pried the womanâs arms off of him. âAh⌠hiâŚâ he said, having no fucking recollection as to what this womanâs name was though he did remember that he had met her through the landlord.
Maggie couldnât help but find his lack of recollection for the woman to be a lot more amusing than it actually was.
âItâs me! Debbie!â Her eyes grew large as she stared at him. âYou didnât get shell shocked, did you, Bucky?â
Bucky cleared his throat and glanced over his shoulder at Maggie with a silent plea, begging her to help him.
But Debbie grabbed his arm â his left one â and Bucky had to restrain himself to not yank his arm back. âDonât you remember all the fun we had before you left for basic training?â
Fun? Any amusement Maggie had briefly felt moments ago had disappeared and her body went stiff as her eyes narrowed in a glare at the back of his head.
Bucky laughed, uncomfortably. âNo, no. I didnât forget.â He had. This was embarrassing. âUm, itâs just, I just got back last night and Iâm here with myâŚâ
Shit, could he call Maggie his wife?

FIC SYNOPSIS: Maggie Hastings meets her dream man after a flight into New York Cityâ Bucky Barnes, a pilot who seems to be everything sheâs looking for. Except that she already has a boyfriend who never has time for her. After a near-tryst with her dream pilot, Maggie runs, only to find out he later meets her best friend and theyâre now crazy about each other. Among their group of best friends, between Chicago and New York, and four weddings and a funeral, Maggie and Bucky struggle to keep their fiery chemistry a secret so they donât hurt the ones they love.

The palm trees stood tall and the sandy ground was covered in fallen beach grass and some construction supplies. The ocean was off in the distance a quarter of a mile away but still very visible from where he was.
âWow,â Maggie breathed out, amazed by the beauty of the island Bucky was helping clean up after the storms. âItâs so beautiful.â Despite the destruction brought on by the storms, the island still looked like a little piece of paradise.
âIt sure is,â he agreed.
Why would Bucky ever want to leave such a beautiful place? Maggie felt the serenity of the island even now through FaceTime.
Did Bucky really want to leave paradise and come back to a city full of chaos and painful memories? Or was he only returning because he felt like he had to?

Despite Buckyâs insistence that she didnât need to move, Maggie still planned on leaving Boston. There was nothing keeping her here anymore since she had quit her job. Besides, Natasha and Maria had already begun to pack up her belongings anyway.
Her mother called Maggie just as she was leaving Bucky's hotel, demanding to know why their family real estate agent had just called her asking what Maggieâs budget was for a place in Miami.
Her mother had been furious with Maggie, so mortified that she had to find out her daughter was moving yet again from someone other than Maggie herself. She had even begun to threaten to cut her off financially when Maggie finally told her mother that she was pregnant.
That certainly changed her tune.
