“When we reveal ourselves to our partner and find that this brings healing rather than harm, we make an important discovery - that intimate relationship can provide a sanctuary from the world of facades, a sacred space where we can be ourselves, as we are…  This kind of unmasking - speaking our truth, sharing our inner struggles, and revealing our raw edges - is sacred activity, which allows two souls to meet and touch more deeply.”  - John Welwood in all about love by bell hooks

Sleeping positions good for your spine: Stiff. Uncomfortable. Feels like a numb piece of driftwood stuck in wet sand. Positional equivalent of studying for an AP chem test.
Sleeping positions that are absolutely awful for your spine: Heavenly. Glorious. Elysian. The most comfortable shape you will ever make with your body. Clears your skin and fixes your mental health. Your dad comes home with the milk.

idea for my spoonie + mentally ill buds out there: use a monthly + weekly planner as a meds/symptoms tracker. i've tried tracking symptoms in my journal, but there's too many sensitive/private entries in that book for me to feel comfortable taking it with me to doctor's appointments or elsewhere (fear of losing it + stranger reading it: high). there was also no structure.
so i bought a basic weekly/monthly planner and this is how i use it:
- the weekly pages with sections for every day aren't used as to-do lists, but rather as a place to record symptoms and changes, like a little journal entry for the day but specifically about disability/disorder stuff
- the monthly sections are used to keep my appointments and health-related obligations organized. it's also a good way to track your period, and it gives you a monthly overview of what meds you're taking (more on that below)
- for every day in the monthly and weekly sections, i'll make a little line of colored squares (using the chisel tip of a mildliner, easy peasy), with each color representing a different med. when i take the medication for that day, i'll treat the colored boxes like checkboxes and draw an ex through them. that way you can see on a weekly and monthly basis how often you're taking certain meds, and they serve as a colorful visual reminder, too. i also make a little legend on the monthly pages in case i forget which color goes with which med
just thought i would share! i've found this to work pretty well, and that's saying alot coming from someone who has tried and failed to be a 'planner person' many a times. turns out i just needed to make it work for me :)

Hot take, but if you see your baby struggle through five hours of homework and then you get pissy because they drag their feet about doing chores? You need to reevaluate.

hey no offense i mean this in the best way but if someone you love is talking about stuff you don’t understand and is very passionate about it (like idk nuclear energy or astronomy), you can a) listen anyway even if you can’t add anything because they’re probably just happy that someone can hear them b) ask them questions about it so you understand if you’re interested because they will surely be willing to answer and happy that you care
you may not care but it means the world to someone that you’re willing to just, listen, when anyone else would just not care about being nice to them about their interests.

"I've seen you hold your breath underwater. You don't really need that scuba gear."
"I've seen you stand. You don't really need that wheelchair."
These statements use the same exact logic. So why is the first considered utterly ridiculous but the second considered a normal belief?

basic self protection can look extreme if you don't understand the threat it's defending against.
a medical professional recently remarked on the spikes on my wheelchair. so i said they are to prevent people from grabbing me. then i had to clarify that yes, that does happen, with alarming regularity. and people become affronted and sometimes even violent when you tell them not to do this. he was shocked.
to him, and to many people who see me in public, the line of spikes on the back of my wheelchair probably looks extreme, if they don't think it's part of some punk aesthetic or whatever.
so perhaps before you judge someone's mode of self protection, as long as they aren't causing harm, it is worth considering they might be defending themselves against a threat you have no idea about.
