escapril day 19: a reminder:

i did winter quarter with a broken heart. kept my fucking four-point-oh, golf idiot or no golf idiot, i put A+ first like i always do, probably always will, and i hosted friends with a broken heart, fed myself with a broken heart, brushed my teeth, cut my hair, treated myself with kindness as best i know how. protected my identity, protected my place in school, knowing that i lost it once and it almost killed me. back then too, i clawed my way back up from the end of my world with a broken heart.

i’ll do spring too with a broken heart if i have to, take the quiz first then let myself tear up. i will search for proof of my own worth, enough to carry on, no matter how unworthy/unwanted/ cast aside i am made to feel. i’ll go to the beach alone again, scream past the empty space next to me, again, pretend the cold ocean spray is patching me up, pretend saltwater can fill my veins, believe hard enough to get myself back in the car and back up highway 1 and ultimately of course back to class, pencil to paper, white noise of an empty test drowning out the broken heart.
