This was supposed to be a LanceWeek23 piece, the finale even - as you can see from the date of completion... fiiiive months later, it didn't quite make it!

[Why I ever thought I was going to finish a piece with four major light sources, in three colours, and about a billion rocks, on time, is another matter entirely. No comment.]

Sometimes your protégé/ward/son falls in a big bloody hole at the arse-end of Mount Silver and you've got to go and fish him out and it turns into a whole thing. Then the things living in the hole become a whole other thing and really, the inconvenient fact that Dragonite don't fit into small spaces is only the beginning of your problems!

Two proud, fierce, spiky-haired warriors face each other across a rocky chasm… but why do they both feel so strangely familiar to the other?! A battle for honour is surely about to begin!

Through Dragonball, Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest, Akira Toriyama had a massive influence on my childhood. I think it’s also pretty fair to say that Pokemon, and especially Lance, would not be the same without his stylistic influence on Ken Sugimori’s early work. So, for all the thrills and inspiration, both to myself and many others, thank you so much Toriyama-san, and rest in peace.

I had so much fun designing a Toriyama-style DBZ design for Lance, putting in a bit of flavour from both his Gen 1 red biker and Gen 2 pointed armour looks. The dramatic cape flourish also pulls a bit from his HGSS art pose, just for fun (and flair)

I learnt a lot picking apart and studying different Dragonball panels and colour spreads to make this crossover tribute, but perhaps the most striking thing was re-reading chunks of DBZ and realising just how good at weekly pulp adventure story pacing Toriyama was.

I already knew he had perhaps the best grasp of dynamic, crystal clear action panelling in the business, but his ability to pace out a weekly story and always have some new twist or wrinkle while maintaining a solid, driving central narrative really stood out to me this time. And that’s not even mentioning all the ad-libbing!

One of the greatest to ever do it in so very many different ways - I am sure his work will continue to inspire not just artists in our current generation, but many young artists in the future as well.

​I said I wanted a tumblr just to speak my nonsense, and here I am. And so, I've been having this Lance HC for the longest time and, it is in regard to his knowledge of stuff like mythos, because I feel he would be really big into literature, mostly in folktales and mythology regarding the Kanto and Johto regions. Although he would not limit himself to only that, knowing or having read the stories from other regions and their respective deities.

I do hc that he has a home office and in said place there are bookshelves with various books he's gathered throughout the years. Some even older than himself— being from the Clan's past, having writings from previous dragon tamers, and his ancestors. He got really big into those stories when just a kid, first hearing them from the elders of the clan or even his grandfather himself, and that's where he began to develop said curiosity.

So if you let this man talk, he'll be talking about Lugia for the next few hours and the other deities in the region before jumping to the complexity of dragon types.

At the gate for my flight home from visiting friends and there's a woman here with a service Shiba Inu. No pics because he has a Do Not Disturb vest and taking pics of strangers is illegal but I need to stress how ON DUTY this animal is. Ears up. Eyes doing Lazer scans of everything. Examining everyone who passes within 10ft like a security guard. Ass planted on her feet. I have never seen a dog with such intense chivalric guardian energy before. He has tiny eyebrows and they are FURROWED with concentration.

So he remains staring defiantly, as if Yomiel were right in-front of him, as he's strung up the stairwell he had descended so many times, that seemed to now extend on forever...

Chapter 15 is such a haunting part of Ghost trick to me but boy does that unseen stairwell scene sure get under my skin ;.;
