X-Men: Dark Phoenix Review

Today I said goodbye to the current cast of the X-Men after seeing Dark Phoenix.

I actually enjoyed the movie, I don't think it's the total shit show people are making it out to be but it definitely had its problems. As a whole, it felt too short. There wasn't enough time for a proper conclusion to most characters' stories or for a better showdown between the X-Men and the Phoenix before everyone was teaming up against the aliens that weren't really developed. And the costumes were just crap. Let's not talk about those awful jackets with the yellow 'X' that were used in place of the actually awesome costumes as the end of Apocalypse and while Magneto did look badass, he didn't really have any kind of Magneto suit. He just wears a dark coat and the helmet was dark again. And of course the Phoenix could have looked much better in some form of her comic suit instead of a dark coat. They did Quicksilver so dirty though. There were other timeline issues and plot holes but eh

However, the acting was just on point. As always, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender just slayed the roles, I'm always amazed by them and they always have been my favourite thing about the new franchise. Sophie Turner was amazing too. I loved her Jean Grey and her Phoenix, it's a shame the writing didn't handle it as well but that has always been problem with most of these movies. Everyone's acting was great to be honest but these three stood out to me.

The score! Oh god the score was incredible! Hans Zimmer really outdid himself it was so good! And the effects. One thing I love about the X-Men movies is that they try and make everything as real as possible without using too much CGI (something I think certain MCU movies can suffer from). The train scene was epic! Also that Cherik scene gave me life. And I will never be over Erik's entrance when Jean goes to Genosha 😂!

All in all, it was a good ending and I'm devastated to see it go. As I said before, I grew up with these X-Men. They're not perfect, sure but they're my X-Men. And that fact that Disney has cut their franchise off before it was meant to end and screwed it over cuz of Captain Marvel and because they want to reboot them instead of using the multiverse to bring them into the MCU has both pissed me off and really upset me if I'm honest. It just seems so needless. The younger actors (Storm, Cyclops, Jean, Nightcrawler and even Quicksilver) deserved a better chance to play the roles than just 2 (or 3) movies.

So, goodbye X-Men. I'll always love and miss you so, so much. You deserved so much better. ❤
