Not when Max has damage. Or Max's car is not performing. Or Max DNFs.
I want Charles to win.
By fighting Max for P1. By having to cleverly plan when to pass Max or whoever else may be in front of him. By driving brilliantly to keep all other drivers behind him.
I want Charles to win.
When everyone is at their best. When there are no circumstances that give him an advantage. No Lap 1 bowling taking out top competitors. No convenient safety car. No team orders to give him the lead.
I want Charles to win.
And get full credit for his outstanding race craft. Kudos for his superior tyre management. Admiration for his smart strategizing.
I want Charles to win.
Not once, but over and over and over again. Setting fastest laps. Getting Grand Slams. Having the fastest pit stop. Beating records set by Lauda, Schumacher, Hamilton, Verstappen.
I want Charles to win.
So I can see him winking as he receives his medal. Fill with pride as he raises his trophy. Watch him fondly look down at his team while the Monegasque anthem plays. Join the Italians as they passionately belt out their anthem.
I want Charles to win.
Until everyone but me is sick of seeing him on that top step. Until no one calls into question his abilities as a top-notch F1 driver. Until every up-and-coming driver aspires to be like him.
Yes, I may be delusional, unrealistic, off my rocker, or in la la land, but I am a Charles-fan, which means...
"In the paddock everyone wonders how Leclerc did not put the car in the wall and did not dnf, given the severity of the problems suffered indicated by the data"
Carlo Vanzini, historical voice of Sky Sport F1 Italia, expressed himself in this way about what he himself learned from the always reliable "radio paddock"
The commentator and journalist of the broadcaster that holds the rights to F1, in fact, pointed out how many were surprised by the miracle carried out by Leclerc in Bahrain, where, despite a huge imbalance in temperatures regarding the braking system of his SF-24, the Monegasque even managed to finish at the foot of the podium.
A real feat, which once again honours the immense talent of the driver of the Cavallino Rampante.
We talk a lot about Charles being unlucky, but yesterday on my way to work, I was thinking about how we were actually incredibly lucky on Saturday.
Lucky that this happened to Charles and not a less experienced driver who might have ended up in a wall or crashing into Zhou. Or Sainz. Or Perez. Lucky that Charles had to deal with a stuck throttle in Austria 2022, so he already had experience with not having enough braking each turn for many laps. Lucky we had Xavi to help keep Charles calm and focused. Lucky the team was working tirelessly throughout the race to try and find settings for Charles that might help him. Lucky we have a pit crew who were absolutely flawless and gave Charles the fastest pit stop of the race. Lucky that we have a team principal like Fred who stands by Charles and does not point fingers at him (figuratively or literally).
Lucky that Charles put on another Bahrain masterclass – this time not in overtaking, but in race craft: getting the second fastest lap of the race on hard tyres (vs. Max’s fastest lap on softs 3 laps later), managing to avoid hitting any cars or barriers while the car was so unpredictable, not giving up despite everything and continuing to try and find ways to solve the issue, and, after fighting with that insane brake temperature imbalance for 57 laps, ending the race in P4.
If anyone's wondering, this was my face watching the 2024 Bahrain GP. I probably still look like this. I think I'll keep looking like this until Jeddah.

just when I think I’ve forza’d my last Ferrari they post a team photo, Charles says forza ferrari sempra, has a special helmet with all their names on that says grazie Ferrari, and walks away from the picture with Fred by his side affectionately holding his shoulder… fuck. forza ferrari sempra.
