____________
The early morning wind coloured Ethan's cheeks in a rosy blush, Jenner skipping along his side.
Boston was always quiet at four in the morning, save the occasional car or pedestrian.
He walked around the park, feeling the wind and the sun, and often stopping to pet Jenner.
Just then, something triggered Jenner, for he shook himself off of Ethan's grasp, and bounded into the bushes.
"Jenner! Hey, Jenner!" The young resident yelled. "Dammit."
He quickly followed the leash, and found Jenner on top of a laughing young lady.
"Jenner!" He exclaimed, pulling him away from the girl, as he went red.
"I'm so sorry." He offered, looking slightly mortified, as he offered the girl his hand.
Hardly had their hands touched that Ethan felt a spark, and almost withdrew his hand.
The girl got up, and smiled.
Ethan's breath hitched.
She was lovely.
Blonde-brown hair sparkling in the wintry sunlight, her cheeks rosy and green eyes sparkling. She must've been at least 5'8", and her smile radiated love.
"He's an absolute love. What's his name?" The girl cooed, sitting down on the grass, as Jenner slowly approached her and snuggled into her lap.
Ethan smiled. "Jenner."
An amused smile tugged at her lips. "Seriously? You named her after Kylie?"
Ethan went a bright red. "What-no!" He spluttered. "Edward Jenner was an English physi-"
The girl cut him off, laughing. "I know who Edward Jenner is. But how about you? Got a name, stranger?"
She pat the grass beside her, and Ethan took his spot. "Ethan Ramsey." He said, smiling.
The girl's jaw went slack. "Ethan Ramsey? As in Junior Resident of Edenbrook's famed Diagnostics Team Ethan Ramsey? As in Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome researcher Ethan Ramsey? As in Diagnostic Principles author Ethan Ramsey?!"
Ethan smiled awkwardly. "I assume you're in the medical field."
The girl stared at him incredulously, her hand working on Jenner's fur on autopilot. "You're kidding."
Ethan raised an eyebrow. "What gave you that idea?"
The girl stared. "So, what you're saying is, I'm sitting beside the person for whom I am enduring med school?"
Ethan chuckled quietly. "Which medical school, may I ask?"
The girl smiled. "JHU."
Ethan nodded appreciatively. "Which year, Ms....?"
"Catherine Valentine, final year. I'm actually....applying to Edenbrook."
Ethan nodded thoughtfully. "I assume internal medicine, considering you read Diagnostic Principles?"
Catherine nodded, then suddenly smiled. "There's this cute puppy café down the block. Can I interest you in joining me for some coffee and cuddles?"
Ethan smiled. "I suppose...."

Courageous Care
Tumblr media
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey X Catherine Valentine
Category: Open Heart, Book 1
Genre: Fluff
Word count: 700+
Warnings: None, lol.
Premise: Ethan helps a young intern during triage.
A/N: Re-written version of the triage scene in book 1, where Naveen is the Chief of Medicine, Harper is Head of Neurosurgery and Ethan is Head of the DT.
___________
Her hand trembled, as she labeled a young girl with a black tag.
Her entire world was spinning.
It was only her first week, and being thrown into the big ocean, with no notice, was quite overwhelming.
"O.R 5." She distinctly heard Harper shouting, but it was as though she herself was working on autopilot, her senses numbed as she labeled yet another man, probably in his mid thirties, a black tag.
She couldn't even comprehend her own feelings, the tags in her hand almost tearing from the sheer force with which she was gripping onto them, as if they were a lifeline.
"Give her a yellow tag, you fool, she's just had two fractures!" She heard another attending yell.
"Catherine, hurry!" She thought she heard Ines say something, but it was all hazy in her mind.
Everything seemed so out-of-place.
She saw Naveen join the doctors, deftly sorting the patients as he lent a helping hand to everyone he could, doctors and patients alike.
She started breathing fast and shallow, tears accumulating in the corners of her eyes.
"Rookie?" That rich baritone- so stern, yet with the minimum hint of a gentleness, was enough to break her final dam.
The tags- green, yellow, red, black- fell from her hand as she started hyperventilating, tears rolling down her cheeks, her patients staring at her in surprise, and shock.
"Rookie." He said sharply.
"Eth- Dr. Ramsey, I-" before she knew it, she was literally crying into his lab coat, her stained hands going around him as she sought comfort.
His jaw dropped in shock, but nevertheless, he allowed her.
"Rookie." He said calmly, "Don't freak out, you can do this. We have so many patients waiting for us."
"I know, Doctor." Catherine said quietly. "I've had to label the last four patients with black tags, and one little boy died right in front of me." She whispered.
Ethan nodded. "I can understand your mental situation, Valentine, but this is part of being a doctor. Fighting till the last ditch. You don't have time to be timid, you must be bold, and daring."
Catherine looked up at him, letting go rather awkwardly. "Sorry, Dr. Ramsey."
Nodding in response, and picking up her tags, he handed them to her. "Alright. You have three gurneys in front of you. Take a deep breath, and tell me who needs what."
Catherine inhaled sharply. "Patient on the left needs a defibrillator. Patient in the middle is in need of immediate surgery. Patient on the right has three fractures in the legs, and internal bleeding in the abdomen."
Ethan nodded. "Label."
Catherine began to calm down as she began to tag them with red labels.
"Good." Ethan said calmly. "Now, think you can take it?"
Catherine nodded, feeling herself calm down. "Thank you." She said softly.
Smiling ever so slightly at her, he left to treat other patients.
_______________
As the last of the patients was sent off from the E.R to be treated, the doctors all sunk down, either onto chairs, or on the beds, some even on the floor.
Catherine caught a curtain stand for support, slowly sliding down until she was sitting on the floor.
She looked at her watch. 1.00 a.m, three hours past her shift, seven hours since the triage started.
She smiled weakly at Sienna on the opposite row, who barely managed a thumbs up.
Getting up on her feet, she saw Ethan sitting on the floor, looking at his stained, gloved hands.
Quietly approaching him, she plopped down near him.
He seemed to be in deep thought, as he stared pensively at his hands.
"Dr. Ramsey?" She whispered.
He jerked up. "Oh, yes...Rookie?" He asked, slightly surprised.
She smiled sadly at him. "Thank you for the advice and help during the triage."
Ethan barely nodded.
"Hey, what are you thinking about?"
His only response was a pensive smile. "The number of people who will make it, the number of people who won't, and the number of people who didn't."
Catherine nodded. "I can't let this get to me." She muttered.
Ethan shook his head. "That's where you're wrong. Doctors should value life, I'd be more concerned if you weren't upset. What you saw today, it's just a reflection of how many people die deaths like this. It's pathetic, and sometimes, even after trying your best, you can't change the fate of the patient. Instead of wallowing in sorrow, however, let your soul feel the pain, the loss, the regret. But, also let it feel the joy of having saved so many lives. I watched you work on the first couple patients during triage, Rookie. You really have what it takes to be an exceptional doctor."
Catherine smiled weakly. "The Ethan Ramsey dishing out compliments?"
Ethan managed a small smile. "Accept it, it's not everyday that you'll get it."
Catherine nodded. "Also, I'm sorry about ruining your lab coat." She said sheepishly.
Ethan shrugged. "I'll be sending the coats for laundry tomorrow anyway, so it doesn't matter."
Catherine smiled. "Did I scare you with the sudden hug?"
Ethan shook his head vehemently. "Scare? No. Startle? Maybe. I've never had interns cry IN my arms. That was definitely a first. Interns usually cry BECAUSE of me, not seek comfort from me."
Catherine smiled. "This needs to go down on Guinness World Records. Ethan Ramsey, mean, cold, diagnostician, let's intern hug him while cryi-"
"Don't push it, Rookie." He warned solemnly, a small hint of a smile tugging at his lips as he slumped against the bed.
"Thank you, though, really." She said sincerely.
Ethan nodded, resting his hand atop hers. "You can thank me by remembering what I said, and implementing it. You don't have time to be-"
"Timid, you must be bold and daring." Catherine finished.
Ethan nodded, smiling. "Exactly."

Snow Storm Love
Tumblr media
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey X Catherine Valentine
Genre: Fluff
Category: Open Heart, post series
Premise: A new friend joins Ethan and Catherine for their first Christmas holiday as a newly married couple.
Word count: 1K+ approx
A/N: Leave a like/reblog if you feel like it, it always makes a writer happy! ❤️
Prompt used: Rescuing a puppy/kitten and bringing it home for it's first holiday with them.
Quote Prompt used: You look even more beautiful in candlelight.
_______________
Catherine sat by the window, sipping her oatmilk latte as she read 'The Christmas Miracle'.
Keeping her book down, she stretched, looking out of the window, into the pretty white scenery. It was Christmas eve, and she was in the festive mood.
It sucked that Ethan had been called in for work for an emergency, but he'd promised he'd be back as soon as possible.
A sudden gust of wind slammed the window open. "Shit!" She exclaimed. Locking the window, she looked through the glass, rather disappointed and a bit scared to see a blizzard.
She curled up in her reading chair, her eyes darting back and forth between the window and her fireplace.
Boston winters were truly bleak.
She tried to call Ethan, but his phone was out of network service. Panicking slightly, she shot him several text messages, each of which failed to deliver. Keeping the phone down, frustrated, she walked downstairs to see how her daughter was doing.
She walked in on Claire playing a role-play with her Barbie dolls. "Hi, Claire." She said softly, taking a seat beside her four year old daughter.
"Mummy!" Claire greeted her brightly. "When is Daddy coming?" Catherine smiled slightly. "Dad will be home soon, love. Where's Pebbles and Jenner?"
"Oh, Jenner is sleeping in the kitchen. You wanna play doll? Pebbles just meowed at me twice when I showed her the dolls and ran off to the sitting room."
Catherine laughed. "I'll play."
She might have been engaged with her daughter's antics, but some part of her mind kept nagging her. Ethan had promised he would be back by two in the afternoon. It was seven in the evening. Where was he?Just then, the doorbell rang.
In anticipation, she rushed to the hall and quickly opened the door, the light in her eyes dying down as she saw it was only the mailman. "Thank you." She said, smiling blankly, as she took the parcel.
She took the parcel inside her daughter's bedroom, and examined it. It was enormous, carefully wrapped with red and green glitter paper. "Claire, baby, any guesses as to what's inside?"
Claire stared at the package. "That's huge, Mummy. Could it be a doll house?"
Catherine smiled. "It could be. It's from Grandma."
"Grandma? Is she and Grandpa not coming for Christmas? What about Uncle David and Auntie Enid? What about Grandpa Naveen and Grandpa Alan?"
Seeing her daughter get all riled up, Catherine laughed. "Everyone is coming tomorrow, baby. Relax. Now, shall we wait for Daddy to come home so we all can open the gift?"
Claire nodded impatiently. "But where is Daddy?!"
"He'll be home soon, love." Catherine assured her.
Just then, the doorbell rang. "That's probably Daddy." Catherine said, grinning as she got up to go open the door.
Sure enough, standing on the other side was Ethan, snow on his blazer covered shoulders and bag.
"Hi, love, how w-" Catherine stopper short when she saw it. "We have company?" She said lightly.
Ethan nodded. "Found this poor one shivering under a tree. I couldn't leave it like that."
Catherine gently took the puppy in her hands, allowing Claire to go outside and hug Ethan. "I'll warm up some milk for this little one."
Ethan nodded, kissing Catherine as he picked Claire up in his arms, entering the warm house. Locking the door, he carried Claire to her room, and gave a low whistle. "Hello, what's this?"
Claire smiled excitedly. "That's Grandma's gift!"
Ethan nodded. "I'll be back in a moment, baby."
He went into the kitchen, lit with a thousand candles, the kitchen table laid out with Christmas themed desserts.
Slowly approaching Catherine from behind, he hugged her, eliciting a delighted squeal.
"You look even more beautiful in candlelight."
Catherine giggled, spinning around in his arms to hug him back. "I missed you, handsome. I was worried sick when you weren't coming home."
"I missed you too. The goddamn network was inactive, so I couldn't even contact you to let you know I'd be late." He murmured, his lips brushing against her ear.
"Let me look at you." He said softly, taking a step back to admire her, effectively making her blush.
"Is that the shirt I gave you?" He asked quietly, smiling.
Catherine nodded, opening her white sweater to reveal the green shirt.
"You're so beautiful." He mumbled, picking her up.
Catherine laughed. "That's huge, coming from you, handsome."
Kissing him, she took the little puppy in her arms. "Can we keep him?"
Ethan smiled. "I was thinking of asking you that. Can we?"
Catherine nodded slowly. Ethan stroked the puppy's fur. "Name it."
Catherine smiled. "How about Jonah?"
Ethan simply looked at her.
"Well?" She asked, her smile faltering.
"Do you realise how sweet you are?" He asked quietly.
Smiling, she slipped an arm around him. "Jonah...." He murmured. The puppy cocked it's head, as if it was happy with the name as well.
Just then, Claire came running into the kitchen. "Open it." She whined.
Laughing, Catherine and Ethan accompanied Claire into her room.
"Who that?" Claire asked curiously, noticing the little puppy in Ethan's arms.
"Meet Jonah, baby. Your new friend."
Claire smiled. "Hello, Jonah! Oh, he is like Jenner!"
Catherine nodded, smiling. "Yes, baby."
Cuddling Jonah was enough for Claire to forget about the present.
Taking the parcel, Catherine opened the wrapper in one smooth, fluid movement.
The wrapping fell apart to reveal five separate boxes, with little name tags.
"Oh, Claire, look, Grandma even sent a box of chocolates!" Ethan said, smiling brightly.
Claire smiled. "Awww, they are Ferrero Rochers!! My favourite! Wait, Daddy. They stay here to see the gift! Pebbles! Jenner!" She yelled.
The two pets came bounding in, Jenner jumping onto Ethan as Pebbles curled up At Catherine's feet.
They unwrapped the parcel, to find a huge framed portrait, drawn by Catherine's mother herself,of Ethan, Catherine and Claire, Pebbles and Jenner on each side. "This is wonderful. Mum outdid herself." Ethan whispered.
Catherine looked at him, stunned.
"What?" Ethan asked in surprise.
"You called her...Mum." Catherine said quietly.
Ethan gently put the portrait down, and turned to hug Catherine. "C, you are the reason I believe in love. You are the reason I'm such a sap." He paused to chuckle softly into the crook of her neck. "You're my family, C. You, and your parents have been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Daphne has been the mother I needed, I still need." He whispered.
Catherine smiled softly and stroked his hair, realising the magnitude of his feelings, the depth of his emotions. "Awww, Ethan, that's so sweet." She whispered.
A sudden squeak interrupted them. "Not fair, Mummy and Daddy! I want in on the love!"
Laughing, Catherine picked her four year old up. "Merry Christmas, Claire." She whispered.
"Merry Christmas..."

__________________
Ethan walked into the hospital, adjusting the tie, the faint scent of artificial fragrance and antiseptic hitting his senses.
He walked straight up to the seventh floor, right into his office.
Keeping his bag on his chair, he began to prepare some coffee to get him through the day. It was a new session, which meant a flock of new interns, and Ethan needed coffee if he wanted to refrain from scaring the interns into quitting.
As he took a sip, his pager went off. "For the love of-" he sighed when he noticed it was from Harper, notifying him to come down to the atrium for the interns' orientation.
Walking past the intensive care unit, he stopped short. He was pretty sure Catherine had been assigned to the ICU today, but she was nowhere to be seen. Maybe she was at the very back of the ward, he wondered, as he kept walking. It was weird that he hadn't seen her at all, considering he saw her every single day.
Pushing the thought to the back of the mind, he took a deep breath and approached the atrium.
He saw Harper finish orientation, and beckoned to Sienna to start the morning rounds.
"Let's get started with rounds." He said coolly, to the interns, some of whom were staring brazenly at his figure, while others were probably daydreaming, their eyes glossy.
Pinching the bridge of his nose, he walked off, Sienna and the interns hot on his trail.
The rounds went pretty well, given Ethan didn't chew anyone out- partly because Sienna intervened at every mistake, partly because some part of him was worrying about Catherine.
As soon as the last intern finished diagnosing, Ethan intervened. "Please remember that your patients were alive the last time I saw them. Make sure that doesn't change." With that, he left.
He went up to his office, and immediately shot Catherine several text messages. Noting that she had been offline since yesterday night, he assumed she hadn't used her phone.
Some part of him still nagged at him to check the attendance register.
He walked over to the nurses' station, and quietly flipped open the register. He scrolled through the Year 2 Residency name-list, seeing almost every name ticked off, but Catherine's.
So she hadn't come in.
That was strange, given she almost never missed work.
Concerned, he went to the Chief of Medicine's office, and hurriedly explained everything to Naveen.
Ethan was allowed a break from work for that day, and he immediately left with a word of thanks to Naveen.
As he drove, he kept trying to contact Catherine-to no avail.
He parked opposite to her apartment, and almost rushed to the elevator.
"Come on, come on, why won't you work..." He muttered, jamming the buttons repeatedly, as if that would help.
Within minutes, he was standing in front of Catherine's apartment.
Fumbling with the spare keys she had given him, he burst through the door, only to be greeted with an empty apartment.
"Catherine?" He called out. No response. He gingerly opened the door to her bedroom, and found her lying on the bed, in a dazed state.
Her eyes were glossy, clearly not conscious. Panicking, he checked her pulse. She was alive.
Picking her up gently, he let her rest on the sofa as he took in her state, and the room.
The bedsheets was wrinkled, a box of tissues and an empty medicine box stood on her cabinet. The room smelled faintly of medicine and coffee.
He turned to look at her properly. She was a complete mess, breaths shallow, hair tousled and an overall disheveled appearance. He gently took her hand, feeling the burning skin. Fever, he realised.
Letting go of her limp hand, he got to work. He cleaned the bed, spread out new bedsheets he found on top of her cabinet, and threw away the used tissues and empty medicine packets.
He quickly pulled out a fresh Tee-shirt, track pants and a sweater from her closet. Carrying her to the bathroom, he gently undressed her, and laid her in the tub. Turning the warm water on, he went in search for soaps. He found some ball-like structures, that were slippery to touch. "Bath bombs." He read off the label. "What the fuck is that?" Spinning the pack around, he somehow figured out it was a kind of soap, so he ripped the packet open, took a blue one out, and gingerly threw it into the tub.
The water began to turn frothy and blue, bubbles erupting in huge numbers. He smiled to himself. Trust Catherine to buy stuff like that.
He began to massage her shoulders, when he saw her eyes flutter open.
A small moan escaped her, as she tried to adjust to the harsh sunlight.
Quickly drawing the bathroom blinds, he turned on the lights and dimmed them.
"What?" Catherine murmured groggily.
"C, it's me." Ethan said gently.
Catherine whipped around to note her boyfriend standing by the bathroom windows, smiling softly at her, his hands blue and foamy.
"What a-are you doing?" She slurred slightly.
"Taking care of you." He said serenely, as he took his place behind her and began to massage her again.
She sunk against the bathtub quietly.
"Why didn't you text me?" Ethan sounded rather hurt.
"I didn't want to worry you. Besides, I hadn't known it would get this serious." She responded quietly.
"Let me take care of you now." Ethan said calmly. "I'll notify Naveen of your illness so you can take the week off."
She smiled weakly at him. "This is why I love you."
He smiled. "I love you too."
Working his way down her back, around her stomach, then back up to her shoulders, he finished massaging her.
Draining the foamy water, he filled it again with lukewarm water, and then helped her out. Grabbing a robe, he gently wrapped it around her, leading her back into her bedroom.
As she dried herself and brushed her hair, Ethan ironed her clothes.
"You don't have to." Catherine protested.
"I want to."
Helping her change, he led her to the bed. "Those weren't the- did you change the sheets?" She asked in disbelief. "How long were you here?"
He smiled lightly. "Long enough to make sure you were comfortable after waking up. Lie down, and let me take your temperature."
"Dammit. You have 101°F fever. You dare not get up." He said, sternly. "I'm going to the kitchen. Relax, now, I'll be back."
Ten minutes later, he returned with a mug of hot chocolate. "Here." He said, smiling, as he put the tray on the bed.
Catherine smiled. "You made little snowmen out of marshmallows?"
Ethan shrugged. "It is December. Might as well."
She laughed weakly. "Who are you and what have you done to Ethan?"
"Don't push it, Rookie." He warned, raising his hands in mock offense.
"Have the drink. I'm preparing soup." With a soft kiss to her burning forehead, he went back to the kitchen.
He didn't see the small smile Catherine allowed upon his actions.
About half an hour later, he returned. "Creamy chicken and mushroom soup." He explained.
She looked at him quietly. "That's my favourite, and you remember."
He smiled slightly. "I always remember anything that has to do with you."
Taking the spoon, he began to feed her.
"I love you so much. Thank you for all this." She mumbled, falling into his lap.
"I love you more, C. I've already ordered the medicines, and I'll reassign your patients for the week. Just take care of yourself, so I can kiss you."
Smirking, she hugged his waist. "How romantic."
"I mean it."
"I know." Her gentle smile, and the gradual return of colour to her cheeks was enough to soothe Ethan's mind about her health, as he gently took her hand and kissed it.
"Get well soon, C."

Hii 🥰
I‘m back with some questions 😍
So I was wondering if there are any Halloween traditions your MC / Li loves to celebrate. Whether it’s from their childhood or from their adulthood.
If they have any special Halloween traditions what are they? And how do they celebrate?
Hallo lovely!! Thank you for the ask, and I'm sorry for such a LATE reply
Catherine (MC) has the mandatory tradition of visiting supposedly haunted places and telling scary stories in the dark.
She is a fully fledged phobophile, an adrenaline junkie. She will scare the living daylights out of her friends during sleepovers.
Oh, did I mention the classic dressing up? If there's anything my MC loves, it's dressing up for Halloween. Her personal favourite Halloween dresses are the Wednesday polka dot costume and the Harley Quinn costume.
Coming to Ethan (LI) he has an aversion to Halloween, but he does has to put up with it (surprise, surprise, he doesn't have a choice) because of Catherine. He does like the candy that is collected after Halloween 🫣
He likes making Jack-O'-Lanterns. That's all, really.

Ethan woke up. His blurry vision scanned the room, before he felt a hand press him back down on a bed.
"Easy there, child." The quiet voice of Daphne Valentine soothed the beating in his ears.
"Where am I?"
"In the hospital."
"What? Why?"
"You hit your head and lost consciousness. The others are also being treated."
Ethan opened his eyes, his vision much better. "How are they?"
Daphne nodded. "Stable."
Then, she whispered, "Thank you for saving my darling."
Ethan smiled weakly, he could feel sleep engulfing him.
"I'll be back in five minutes, your father will be arriving shortly."
Just then, Alan walked in, and Daphne smiled in delight. "There you go, Ethan."
The two adults exchanged pleasantries, before Daphne bent down and kissed Ethan on the forehead and walked out.
Ethan closed his eyes tightly, trying to keep his emotions at bay.
Being kissed like that, with maternal love and affection, even the heavens knew he'd missed it.
He felt Alan talking, and he engaged in the conversation.
___________
Catherine moaned, her head throbbing as her eyes tried to adjust to the warm lights.
"Holy fuc-"
"I'm here."
"Holy fuchsia."
"Totally believable."
"What else would I be meaning?"
"Of course." The teasing twinkle of Daphne Valentine welcomed Catherine back to consciousness.
She sat up, looking around. She was in the general ward, and saw her friends in different beds, their parents surrounding them.
"Where's Ethan, Anna and Bryce?"
"Ethan is in a private ward because he faced several injuries all over his body, Anna is in ventilation, and Bryce is at the other end of the ward. His parents will be arriving shortly."
Catherine nodded. "Can I see them?"
"Wait for the doctor."
Just then, Sienna's voice reached her. "C?"
"I'm alive."
"Me too. Cheers."
"Cheers. Where's the doctor?"
"Mom said she's coming."
"Ehh."
Just then, a doctor walked in. "How are you kids feeling?"
"Alive."
The doctor quickly performed an overall checkup, and announced everyone fit. "You all can go see your friends if you wish."
The six got out of their beds.
"Ethan first. Then Anna." Catherine said firmly.
"Without doubt."
Catherine saw the adults talking, and they slipped out.
"Doc said room 625."
_____________
"Ethan?" His eyes fluttered open to meet the nervous face of Catherine Valentine.
"Hi" he softly murmured.
"Doc said we are fit to leave, what about you?"
"Mm...will be discharged...two hours.... hurts in the head....see you soon..." Ethan's eyes were struggling to stay open.
"Get well soon, stupid." Jackie mumbled.
"He's not stupid?" Sienna said incredulously.
The friend group went out, Catherine requesting an extra five minutes with Ethan.
Before she could speak, however, "no."
She looked at him in surprise. "No, C. I know you are going to apologize, for what? There's nothing to be sorry about."
Catherine mumbled something before sitting by him and stroking his hair.
Seeing his smile, she bent down to softly brush her lips against his forehead, eliciting a delighted squeal from him.
"Oh, sorry." Catherine looked up to see Alan and Daphne standing there, smiling slightly.
She backed off, feeling a blush creep up her neck. "I'll just..."
"Stay." The guardians left the two teens alone, and Ethan snuggled into the thin blanket, the comforting presence of Catherine lulling him to sleep.
____________
It was morning when Catherine blinked against the harsh lights. The distinct voice of Ethan rang through her ears, and she bolted up.
"Hi, C." The cheerful face of Ethan Ramsey and the morose face of Anna Holden met her.
"Hi."
Anna extended a hand awkwardly. "I believe we got off on the wrong foot. I'm sorry, and, I'd like to start over."
Catherine smiled. "Thank you."
She looked around. It was her living room. Her friends were lying in different positions, either sleeping or half awake.
Just then, Sienna stirred. "Mmmm."
Catherine laughed. "Good morning to you too."
"Morning, duck face."
Catherine shoved her playfully, as Sienna groaned. "Bloody hell, I feel so sore."
"Stretch around, it'll help."
"Gee, thanks, Doc."
"Main question is, how did we end up in C's living room?" Anna asked curiously.
"That would be me."
The twinkling face of Daphne Valentine popped into the room. "Your parents gave me permission to let all of you spend a couple of days at our place."
Bryce smiled. "Thanks, Mrs. Valentine."
Daphne smiled, then said, "Breakfast is ready, if you all are."
____________
Ethan took his place beside Catherine, blushing slightly.
"Why are you looking like a tomato?" Catherine asked, giggling.
Ethan looked at his plate, unable to say anything.
Teasingly, Catherine squeezed his thigh, and Ethan went fifty shades darker.
Catherine looked down, just in case she hurt him, then had to bite back a small laugh.
Ethan couldn't even look at her.
"Awww." Catherine teased.
"Stop. It's embarrassing." Ethan mumbled.
Catherine laughed. "What? It's natural, now that you're undergoing adolescence."
Ethan sighed. "I know, but really? Here, of all places? Everyone will see it as soon as I get up!" He whispered.
Catherine laughed. "Hopefully it'll die down by then."
"What are you two talking about?" Sienna asked curiously.
"Look at Ethan, he's blushing." Anna teased.
Jackie snorted. "Who knows, maybe they're playing under the table."
"Jackie!" Elijah said, blushing slightly. "We are minors!"
Jackie rolled her eyes. "Chill, meathead. We all know what sex is." Bryce added.
Catherine laughed as Ethan blushed harder. "Awww you're fifty shades of red."
"It's not funny." Ethan hissed, and Catherine stopped, seeing his eyes.
"Sorry." She said apologetically.
Even after lunch, Ethan resolutely refused to get up for reasons unknown to all but Catherine.
As the others filed out of the room, Catherine was about to turn the lights off when she saw Ethan sitting at the table.
She chuckled. "Your tent pole is still upright?"
Ethan helplessly glared at her.
______________
"I win!" Sienna declared, knocking out Catherine's final chess piece.
"Well played, Si. Rematch?" Catherine said enthusiastically.
"You're on!" Sienna said, laughing.
_______________
"Goodnight, campers. Have fun." Daphne Valentine said cheerfully before leaving Catherine's bedroom, all the kids camping on mattresses.
_______________
The next morning, Ethan woke up to a dark room.
"Mmnghh." He moaned. Looking at the digital alarm clock, he realised it was 4.00 a.m.
Just then, he felt someone stir beside him.
"Ethan?" Anna whispered.
"Mm?"
"It's so dark."
"Mm."
"Go to sleep."
"Mm!"
"Stop saying mm!" Anna snapped sleepily.
"Mm..."
Sighing, Anna turned on her side and went back to her peaceful slumber.
________________
It was 8.00 a.m when they all were very rudely awoken by Lucas Valentine barging in, in pursuit of his lost TV remote.
After breakfast, when everyone left, Daphne called Catherine for a conversation.
"Invite them over for your birthday." She said simply.
"What? Oh, yeah. I'd been planning on that." Catherine said lightly.
"Don't plan, put it in action. Your birthday is almost here."
Catherine nodded. "Alright. I'll invite them now."

Last Shift
Premise: It’s Cassie’s last day as a resident, and she has plans to commemorate the occasion with Ethan.
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine) Rating/Category: Teen. Fluff. Words: 1,705
A/N: Submission for @choicesprompts Rewrite Challenge. This fic is inspired by The Rookie TV show, season 3, episode 9 when Lucy runs through a relationship checklist with Tim on her last day as a rookie. I'm also using @choicesflashfics week 43, prompt 1.
Tumblr media
The day was finally here. Three soul-crushing years of being at the beck and call of attendings. Three rewarding years of tackling the most challenging cases in medicine. Three awe-inspiring years of working with her medical hero, Dr. Ethan Ramsey.
Three years of laughter, tears, disappointments and hope. Three years of living in Boston and making it her home. Three crazy years full of shenanigans with her friends, she thought, eyeing everyone around her as they exited the T station and walked toward the hospital.
Cassie Valentine still couldn’t believe it was her last shift as a resident. Starting tomorrow (or in a few weeks since she was taking some much-deserved time off), she would be an attending physician in Edenbrook’s internal medicine department.
After much haggling, her offer letter and contract were sealed, signed and delivered. Ethan had been amused by the back and forth, but no Valentine accepted the first offer presented. Max would’ve never let her hear the end of it, and her grandfather would’ve tried to disown her again.
Still in disbelief, she reached out and pinched her friend and roomie, Jackie Varma.
“Ouch! What the fuck, Valentine?!?”
“Sorry, but I can’t believe it’s our last day as residents!” Cassie said in a sing-song voice.
“So you pinched me instead of yourself?”
“Well, yeah. If I pinched myself, how would I know it was real?”
Jackie rolled her eyes and changed places with Sienna as they neared Edenbrook’s gleaming façade. Aurora threw both of them an amused look but kept walking.
“Is Dr. Ramsey doing anything special to memorialize your last shift?” Elijah asked.
“Yes, he is. He just doesn’t know it yet,” Cassie quipped, sharing a conspiratorial wink with Sienna.
Only her besties were aware of the list she’d prepared with steps one should take to ensure a healthy parting in a relationship. She’d found it in one of her Psychology textbooks and decided it was the perfect way to mark the end of this stage in her career.
Once inside the hospital, they split off to their respective floors after making plans to meet for lunch. Their last one together as residents, Cassie thought, getting teary-eyed at the thought.
Technically speaking, most of them were staying here. Jackie was Chief Resident for a second year, Sienna would start as a senior Pediatrics resident, and Elijah staying on as a researcher.
Bryce still had one more year in his surgical residency and would likely remain at Edenbrook for a fellowship. Only Aurora was leaving to work across town at Mass Kenmore.
“Are you getting emotional again, Rookie?” Ethan teased when she walked through the Diagnostic Team’s glass doors, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye.
Last night at the graduation ceremony and dinner, he took great pleasure in needling her about getting sentimental. Her parents and Max had flown in for the occasion. Their effusive pride in her accomplishment was dampened by Ethan’s uber-rationality.
“When I was your age, I couldn’t wait for my residency to finish,” Ethan said, leaning back in his chair.
“I’m excited. Believe me,” Cassie said. “But I also know the importance of acknowledging your loss when going through something like this.”
“Acknowledging your loss?” Ethan looked wary. “Is this from one of your online pop psychology quizzes?”
“Funny you should say that,” she said eagerly, pulling up a list on her phone. “One should follow a series of steps to ensure a relationship ends amicably. We are going to work through every single one of them. Today.”
“Are you breaking up with me? Was I just a residency fling?” Ethan said morosely, gazing at his fingernails.
“What? No, of course not,” Cassie tripped over her tongue, shocked.
“I hope you know by now how much you mean to me,” he said, his expression crestfallen.
“I do, completely.” Cassie felt her heart hitch at the thought of their personal relationship ending. “Ethan…”
Anguished, she started to reach for him, stopping mid-step when he looked her straight in the eye and smirked nastily.
“Gotcha!”
“You’re such an ass,” she shrieked.
“You know nothing’s changing tomorrow except your title, right?” he said reasonably, coming out from behind the desk to stand before her, arms crossed.
“Not true,” Cassie said, disgruntled at how obtuse Ethan could sometimes be.
“Well, yes,” Ethan nodded. “You might get one of the closet-sized offices reserved for new attendings instead of squatting in mine.”
“So, you won’t miss working with me at all?” Cassie said skeptically, waving away the second part of his statement.
“No.”
“Mm. Denial. Check,” Cassie hummed, ticking the item on her phone.
“Besides,” Ethan continued, ignoring her comment, “your new inflated contract, one you spent weeks negotiating, guarantees you a permanent spot on the Diagnostics Team. You’ll likely spend most of your day here.” He paused for dramatic effect. “With me. Like you’ve done for the last two years!”
“Okay, we’ve moved on to anger. This is progress.”
Ethan threw his hands up in frustration and turned away to grab files off his desk.
“Put your list away,” he ordered. “Baz and Tobias should be here shortly. We have a new case. The patient is being transferred from Portland Memorial.”
“Might as well,” Cassie grumbled, taking her seat at the conference table. “The next step is to surround yourself with people who support, value and energize you.”
“I’m offended,” Ethan shot back. “I support, value and energize you plenty. Or did you forget where my mouth was last Saturday night?”
Before Cassie could retort, the door slid open, and the team filed in. She threw Ethan a vexed look that promised retribution and switched her attention to the case.
It was late afternoon by the time she had a moment free. Desperate for coffee, she texted Ethan to check if he wanted to join her at Derry’s. He texted back a thumb’s up emoji, and five minutes later, they met in the atrium to head out together.
“What’s next on your list?” he asked curiously, folding her hand in his as they strolled down the street and cut through the square with its manicured pathways.
Cassie reached for her phone and pulled up the notes app with one hand. “Reflect on the lessons learned — good and the bad — and express gratitude.
“Okay. So what have I taught you?”
“Not to second-guess myself,” Cassie acknowledged. “I was so scared of you my first day as an intern. When Annie coded, you berated me, telling me I should think seriously about becoming a doctor. That sent me into a tailspin, and it took me months to feel like I could do this. Thank you for not giving up on me.”
With a grin, she tapped the phone and turned the screen so Ethan could see the checklist. “Four down, one more to go!”
He rolled his eyes but didn’t say anything.
They arrived at Derry’s, and Ethan stepped aside to hold open the door for her. For the next half-hour, they put the list and work aside and simply enjoyed their coffee date and each other’s company.
Finally, it was the end of her shift. True to form, she’d spent every minute of her last day as a resident doing precisely what she loved. And with the best people imaginable.
“Good job, everyone,” Ethan said to the team gathered in the office. “I’ll send a copy of the treatment plan to the referring attending at Portland Memorial. Clock out and have a good night.”
Cassie exchanged pleasantries with Baz as Tobias saluted goodbye.
“I’m buying you a round at Donahue’s,” Baz said, smiling. “See you there?”
“Absolutely. I have to empty my locker, but should be there in thirty.”
With a wave to Ethan, he joined Tobias in the hallway. Heads together in discussion, the two of them disappeared from view.
“We did it!” Cassie clapped her hands, rubbing them in glee.
“No, you did it,” Ethan commented, handing her an envelope.
“What’s this?”
“My evaluation of your entire residency,” he said, leaning against the front of his desk. “As you know, I’m not allowed to formally evaluate you, given our personal relationship. But, nothing stops me from doing it informally.”
Cassie stared at the envelope but didn’t open it. She hadn’t admitted to herself until now how much she needed this. She had come to Edenbrook to learn from this man, and despite everything, she needed Doctor Ramsey’s approval. Not just Ethan’s.
“Everything okay?” he asked, concerned.
She nodded. With a deep breath, she tore open the envelope and unfolded the piece of paper inside to read the words aloud.
“Dr. Cassie Valentine, MD, is the best diagnostician I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. The Diagnostics Team and its mission couldn’t be in better hands.”
“Thank you,” Cassie said, tearing up again, much to Ethan’s chagrin.
“I couldn’t be the doctor I am today if you hadn’t mentored or challenged me to excel.” She squeezed his hand to let him know how much she appreciated him. “I’ve learned to trust my medical instincts, even if it’s not how you would do it. And I found my own path to being a doctor, just like you said I would the night we lost Dolores.”
“You’re welcome,” he straightened from the desk and framed her face between his hands. “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can't do something. Not even me.”
“Acceptance. Our checklist is complete,” she said with a watery smile before adding. “I have something for you too.”
Cassie reached inside the pocket of her white coat and handed Ethan a small envelope. He stared at it quizzically, turning it over, trying to guess what was inside.
“Open it!” she said, steepling her fingers under her chin, practically vibrating from excitement.
“What the fu—"
She laughed uproariously as Ethan stared in confusion inside the envelope. He quirked one eyebrow and held out the four one-dollar bills she’d stuffed in there.
“One dollar for each year of private lessons and a dollar tip.”
With a wink and a pat on his cheek, Cassie left the Diagnostics Team office for the last time as a resident and junior fellow with a jaunty spring in her step.

Hii 🥰
So in honor of World Yoga Day. I wanted to ask do your MC‘s and or OC‘s practice any type of sports?
If yes which one and why?
Hiiii and thanks a tonne for the ask >>>
I'm so sorry for the late reply 🤧 but let's get into it.
My MC is a sportaholic(?). She loves any type of outdoor and rigorous physical activities, but she's also super into yoga, for it helps her calm her mind and focus when she's not having the best day at work.
Picture 1: Catherine at the gym.
Picture 2: Catherine after a long run.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for my OCs:
David loves football and badminton. He even installed a badminton court in his home so he could play at his convenience with Vivianne or his kids.
Vivianne likes pretty much everything, starting from contortions to cricket. She's an expert with the basics of pretty much every game, and was a swim coach (part-time) when she was still in school.
And of course, Ethan. He maintains a healthy life. He's super strict about fitness and spends at least one hour in the gym every single day. Be it the treadmill or the pistol squat, Ethan can be found working out every day, at some point or the other (preferably mornings/before work).
Bonus: Ethan, Catherine, David and Vivianne are all into swimming.

The din died down as the sharp sound of Mr. Lucas' boots reached the classroom.
Within minutes, he had stepped in, placing his books on the table and facing the class.
"Good morning, students. Today, we will be focusing on quadratic equations."
As there was a groan from the class, Mr. Lucas laughed.
"Some of you will be spared just for these three weeks. We have an upcoming Science Fair, and this class has been chosen to represent the entirety of grade 9."
He swept his eyes around the room sternly. "I expect you to give your very best, because all the schools in London will be participating."
"I will now announce the names of the people I've chosen for the team."
"Anna Holden, Aurora Emery, Bryce Lahela, Catherine Valentine, Elihah Greene, Ethan Ramsey, Jackie Varma, and Sienna Trinh."
"All eight of you, please go to room 40 and start your project."
The eight quietly sidled out of their seats. Hardly were they out of the classroom when Bryce, Catherine, Sienna, and Elijah cheered; Jackie, Ethan and Aurora rolled their eyes rolled their eyes affectionately.
Just then, they heard a groan. Turning back, they saw Anna staring at them as though they were aliens.
"Get a grip."
Ethan raised his eyebrows, but Anna ignored him.
"So, for the proj-"
"Let's get to room 40."
Leaving an irate Anna behind, the group continued.
Reaching the third floor and entering room 40, they gasped.
The room was huge. Shelves filled with books lined one wall, there was a huge window, cushions and bean bags, and the air conditioning was on. The room was well lit and very minimalistically decorated, giving bohemian style library vibes.
Bryce whistled. "Damn, man."
Aurora was about to say something, when an "ow!" caught all of their attention.
Turning around, they saw Catherine on the floor, holding her bandaged ankle, while Anna stood on top of her.
"You moron! What happened?!"
Anna rolled her eyes. "This clumsy bitch over here fell down when I nudged her."
"Pushed me, more like."
Fire was blazing in Ethan's eyes. Before he could react, however, there was a sharp crack in the air.
Jackie's hand had connected with Anna's upper arm, which looked red, as Anna yelped.
Catherine looked around to see Ethan and Bryce standing behind her, their faces taut with rage; Elijah and Sienna were literally shouting at Anna while Jackie and Aurora helped Catherine up.
"Thanks, guys."
"No problem. I can't believe we have to work with this git."
Anna, rubbing the sensitive spot on her arm, ignored the group and walked inside. As they made themselves comfortable, Ethan began to speak.
"I think we should do something that's not just fun, but also has a strong scientific and logical background to prove the hypothesis."
Aurora raised her hand. "Mechanics?"
Ethan nodded. "Yes. But we need a particular subtopic. Any ideas on that?"
Seeing everyone but Anna raise their hands, he got out a pen and paper.
"Let's list the topics."
Ethan passed the paper and they quickly wrote down their topic. When the paper passed back to Ethan, his eyes shone. "Genius."
After he read the topics out loud, everyone cheered, including Anna.
"We've got great topics, it'll be hard to choose from." Catherine shrugged.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
"I think we should discuss the pros and cons, first," Elihah slowly said.
Ethan nodded. "Yeah. Beginning with Thermodynamics....."
After an hour or so, the group finished weighing their options. Ethan triumphantly laid his sheet in front of them.
Tumblr media
When everyone nodded in approval, Ethan got up. "Let's take a five minute break."
As soon as the others were out of the room, Catherine was immediately by Ethan's side. "Hey."
"Hi." Ethan smiled guiltily.
Catherine sighed. "I know you're still beating yourself up over my injury. Don't. I'm always clumsy."
Ethan chortled. "I'll take your word for it. Come here."
He pulled her up in a hug, as she buried her face in the crook of his neck, inhaling his comforting cologne.
"Nice perfume. What is it?"
"Light blue Intense."
"D&G?"
"Yea- that tickled!"
Catherine giggled, as she clutched him tightly, tickling his sides as he fell to the floor, his head hitting a soft cushion.
"Ewwwwww"
They whipped around sharply to Anna's disgusted look. "Get a room, you two."
Ignoring her, Catherine bent down and purposefully kissed Ethan deeply.
Grinning, she got off, while scarlet heat suffused Ethan's cheeks. Jesus Christ.
The others came back at that time so Anna didn't have the time to rebuke the couple, but had to focus on the project.
Ethan nodded at them. "Let's focus on the practical first."
He had hardly picked up his diary when the fire alarm went off.
Bryce sighed. "Drill, again? We just did it yesterday."
Aurora frowned. "What if it is a real fire, though?"
Anna Holden just shook her head. "No. We've Baan having way too many drills. Couldn't be a fire."
But Catherine pursed her lips. "I think Aurora is right. Might as well go check, just to be sure."
Just then, the Principal's voice echoed through the loudspeakers. "Good morning, everyone. Please file out immediately. A fire has been detected in the chemistry lab."
Jackie pouted. "Yeah, that's what she always says."
Ethan nodded, but then, his eyes widened. The others watched him intently as they saw the horror of realization sink into him.
The Chemistry Laboratory was room 42. Directly beside them.
Just then, the acrid smell reached them, and wisps of smoke curled under the door and entered the room.
Sienna shrieked while Elijah clung to her; Jackie was staring at the fire, horrified; Aurora and Bryce hastily started gathering their supplies while Ethan tried to help- not that he could do that much, considering Catherine was clinging on to his back for dear life.
Ethan opened the windows, gasping for fresh air. Turning, he choked.
Catherine was walking towards the door.
"Catherine! No!" Even before he could finish his sentence, Catherine had opened the door to be greeted by roaring flames.
She screamed, stumbling back, as Ethan and the others rushed to her side.
Catherine was staring at her burnt left hand, her eyes watering with pain.
Ethan gently touched the skin, and she screeched.
Bryce shook his head. "Severe injury."
Sienna quickly opened her backpack. "I always carry a first-aid kit. I've got plaster, gauge, cotton and antiseptic. These will have to do for now."
Ethan quickly took the kit from her hand with a swift thanks.
But then, Elijah growled. "The fire is nearer than you think! CALL PRINCIPAL COLLINS!"
Catherine motioned to her blazer pocket, and Ethan immediately got the hint. Fishing out her Android, he called the Principal, praying she'd pick up.
"Hello?"
The relief the group felt was a different level of calm.
"Principal Collins, this is Aurora Emery. Seven of my friends and I are stuck in room 41, unable to get out. The fire is at the door. Please send help."
There was a moment of silence while everyone waited with bated breath.
"Go to the closet on the right. There's a rope ladder."
"Why is there a rope ladder?" Bryce asked incredulously.
"Thank your lucky stars. This room was formerly the gym. Now do as I say. Fix the ends of the rope ladder to the windows. You'll find white hooks at the edges."
Elijah, Jackie, Sienna, and Ethan worked on the rope ladder while Aurora spoke on the phone and Catherine tended to her hand.
They had hardly managed to secure the rope when Anna and Catherine screamed. The others turned around in shock to see that they were almost engulfed by the fire.
"Climb down the ladder. It's strong enough to hold 4 people at a time. Fast!"
"But Ma'am, Catherine can't! She has a burnt hand!"
The voice on the other end gasped. "Help her! I can't help you in any other way. The fire brigade will arrive in ten minutes, but I can't make you wait for that."
Jackie and Aurora took hold of Anna, who had fainted, and started climbing down.
Bryce and Elijah had no choice but to go next, since they had the bags filled with their supplies.
That left Ethan, Sienna, and Catherine in the room, who were looking at each other fearfully. Sienna was gasping. "I can't - bre-athe prop-pro-properly, he-he-lp."
Ethan quickly wrapped one arm around Catherine and swung her onto his back. Taking Sienna's hand, he was about to try and jump, when he saw Bryce come up again.
"What are you doing, you git?" Ethan shouted.
"Let me handle Catherine. Or Sienna. You won't be able to climb down like that."
Ethan stared for a split second, before gently letting go of Sienna's hand, guiding her to Bryce.
The four quickly made their way out, and jumped down as soon as they reached floor level.
Hardly had Ethan's feet touched the grass than he slid onto the garden floor.
He saw the nurse performing CPR on Anna, while Jackie, Elijah, Aurora drank water and used oxygen supplies to regulate their breathing.
Sienna was coughing, while Bryce lay flat on the floor, puffing heavily.
Ethan felt dizzy. He felt his head hit Catherine's shoulder before all went black.
