New York swagger in the house. Stepping in the booth repping the east coast. Thankfully, music studios are usually dark specially the mic booth, as I used the modeling lights to make this since I couldn't get the strobes to properly trigger. I switched to my prime 50mm and shot it at F2.0 since I knew that's when that lens got sharp. This was one of the final images we made that day back in 2006. We did this shoot in a music studio in Hayward called 17 Hertz. I was using 2 @paulcbuffinc strobes I borrowed from my school. To trigger the lights, they gave you the sync cord plus a hot shoe adapter to plug the sync cord to. When I setup the lights, the hotshot adapter didn't work & it wouldn't trigger the lights (at the time, I didn't know you could actually plug it directly to the camera). So to work around this, I used my Canon Speedlite to trigger the lights from the slave. However, I was getting weird results. Even though the lights were trigging from the slave, everything was coming up extremely underexposed. It appeared the camera was only capturing the very end of the flash from the strobe. No matter how bright or close I put the lights, it would come out underexposed. I took a few frames like this as I thought I could maybe push the exposure in post (I was getting the results I wanted but it was just way under). Thankfully, I was able to. This was pushed about 2 stops in post and it still came out good. For the rest of the shoot to work around this, I just used the modeling lights which is what lit the previous shot. I told James the school studio/equipment manager the issue I had and he said maybe it was a pre-flash from the Speedlite that was throwing it off. Either way, I was happy I was to find a work around. Relentless #sosnicaragua A warrant was issued for several journalist and news directors Miguel Mora & Lucia Pineda last month. The station was raided and they were incarcerated. In addition, for 5months and counting the government is withholding materials required to produced newspapers. Silence, censorship and looking the other way are allies of oppression and dictators. These human right violations and crimes are currently being committed in Nicaragua under the dictator Daniel Ortega, who has disgusting 30+ year track record of atrocities including raping his daughter and executing people want to speak up against him like Alexis Arguello. This project was done in an effort to be bring attention to these human right violations, crimes and censorship. I certainly understand I'm in an extremely privileged position having escaped that situation at the age of 6 and being nearly 4,000 miles away. I'm reminded everyday how lucky I am when my biggest concerns are making photos and not eating too much food. Despite being in this privileged position, I still find myself having to be concerned with what I make and haven't been able to do what I want, with who I want for a number of reasons. If you're afraid to speak your mind or express yourself, you're not free. Not being afraid for yourself is one thing, but having family/friends face consequences of your actions is completely different. And that's an actual problem I'm trying to figure out. My favorite from this look/location of @sarinamariefitness . Like the previous image, all done in camera 📸 stacked filters in front of my lens and blasted her with light. 2 @profotousa B1's at full power with a P50 magnum reflector on each at position 4 to focus the light and add power. Ran test prior to get this look but the most important thing to get this image is what any real estate agent will tell is important: "location, location, location!" We drove around for a bit to find the right place so I could photograph her against the sky and not see any power lines or trees.
