Didn't have a lot for this week, but found this in one of my Star Wars wips

"Cal tore across the open ground, ignoring the sound of stone cracking as the force of the cannon’s firepower shattered the rock behind him. The only thing that kept him from getting shot in the back was instinct; his lightsaber collided with the blaster bolts, sending them back toward the droids as he ran. He couldn’t go directly down the hill, that way was blocked by an army, so he was trapped sprinting along the summit, dodging and deflecting enemy fire as more and more droids noticed him.

His heart was racing like he’d been running for kilometers, and his breath tumbled in and out past his lips at such a frantic cadence that it left his head buzzing. If he could just wake up, or find the Mantis, or anything that wasn’t this, he would be okay. All he needed was to get away from mechanized voices shouting, 'Kill the Jedi!' That’s it. Then he would be fine."

I have a question for the fanfic writers among you: How do you treat your work in progress when a very similar story is put out there? Do you go on writing - in the spirit that everything is unique in its own way - or do you abandon the piece - in the spirit of preventing 'superfluous' contributions?

Let's add a further wrench into the process by saying the recently published work by another author, so similar to your own, seems so much better written than your own (granted we are always our own worst critics). Where do you go with that?

Maybe this is a question for readers, too. Do you mind reading similar works/story lines?
