This was a memorable fish on a dry fly. It really shows how good the smaller rivers on the Tweed system are. I spent a lot of time waiting and planning its capture and after a spectacular battle it took off like rocket back to its element. I can’t put into words how rewarding this day was. I love crawling around in undergrowth like a loony and walking 12,000 steps for moments like this. Trout and Grayling fishing on the Tay with Dominic @steelheader1209 from @dun_aluinn Glorious weather today and good if sporadic hatches between 1 and 3pm. It’s great to work with a guest who is such a competent angler. I really enjoyed showing him all the hidden spots of this beat. We lost a couple of really good fish, the one we saw leaping repeatedly when hooked was a good trout but the trailing dropper snagged on a rock. Another fish clean broke Dom. It’s great to be out there guiding again. On a FAM trip to the wonderful hidden gem that is Knockendarroch. @knockendarroch_hotel is perched above Pitlochry with views over the town and surrounding hills. The stunning property has 15 bedrooms in the main house, two of them being suites and 3 premium rooms. All the rooms are furnished to a very high standard. Despite that the property enjoys modern touches like hassle, free Wi-Fi in every part of the building and USB plug charging sockets. There are spacious comfortable lounge areas with roaring log fires. The staff are lovely and very professional. The beds are comfortable. The showers are hot and the food is exquisite. Head Chef, Nick Imrie, has been cooking at Knockendarroch since 2016. His modern Scottish menus change every day and use seasonal and locally sourced ingredients where appropriate. Almost….Almost! I thought I’d try this Cortland DT 444 and Danielsson reel on the ESN 10ft 2 weight. I attached (loop to loop) my Euronymph rig to the end of the fly line. It’s detachable. 35ft 6lb Amnesia/ Rio indicator. If a hatch came on I could remove it, roll it up and stick it in a pouch, then use the ESN as a dry fly rod. So how did that go? The first thing you should know is the @danielssonflyreels Danielsson Nymph doesn’t marry with the ESN reel seat too well. What a disappointment. It does hold, but only just. I wouldn’t have complete confidence that during a day of normal fishing, it would work itself loose at some point and fall down onto the gravel. In terms of how the rod performed as a dry fly rod, it was surprisingly good. Naturally, a softer action than the Sage LL or R8. The blank flexing right through the middle section, but if you slow the cast down and adjust accordingly it performs well enough and I was still able to perform 50 or 60 feet casts into a headwind. So for close up, intricate presentation it was good. I suppose ultimately carrying two rods (dry and nymph) on a day is a bit of a pain, so it might be a solution. Now trying to figure out if I could put for for for for line onto the ESN reel. Has anyone loaded an ESN reel with a dry fly line/ nymph combo? It is a stunning beat at Commonty. Big thanks to Ian Fraser a top ghillie. There are a couple of spots on the beat where the wading is lumpy. Re-detonated a life vest on the garden pool. We started to see fish showing below the Bend in the afternoon which was encouraging. No hook ups, but a hugely enjoyable couple of days, despite the biting North wind, sleet and cold temperatures. It’s a good example of ensuring you have plenty of warm layers.
