Quick pirate facts:
Jolly Rogers.
There are two base options for piratical colours (ācoloursā here meaning the banner under which they sail, not the colour of the fabricā¦ which I am discussing oops) blackĀ and red.Ā
The blackĀ was the more common of the two, and indicated that quarter would be given should the prize strike (surrender). Of course, should the prize fail to strike, the pirates would allow no quarter.
The redĀ indicated that no quarter would be given. It was clearly less common because it made things more difficult for the pirates - prizes that knew there was no prospect for mercy would not strike, and would always try to flee or fight.Ā
Additionally, a pirateās Jolly Roger carried a unique sigil - this is a cricisim of Black Sails that Iāve seen several times and itās the worst. People claim there are noĀ āproperā pirate flags (meaning the iconic skull and crossed bones or crossed swords), but in fact the blacks shown in Black SailsĀ are much closer than most in their portrayal of pirate colours. (Though the skull and crossed bones/swords were indeed common sigils, they were far from the only ones, and there was no universal symbol forĀ āpirateā - the black flags were sort of like calling cards so prizes would know who was attacking them and hopefully be intimidated into submission.)
Finally, Jack Rackham popularised the skull and crossed cutlasses seen in Pirates of the Caribbean, although his colours are shown to feature a tricorn hat in Black Sails. This is because Disney copyrighted his actualĀ jolly roger. Because they assholes.Ā

Since I'm just saying a bunch of shit right now, here's some more <3 : this blog is going to be more selective from here on out.
I've said I'm selective on this blog the entire time I've had it, but I really haven't been. I've already gone through and unfollowed/blocked some 100+ blogs because I was just following way too many people who I wasn't interacting with and don't plan to.

I have a (still unfinished) carrd now! There's been a slight rule change regarding ages: I won't follow anyone under the age of 20. I won't be unfollowing if we're already moots, so this'll be going forward.
I also started my new job this week! It's given me way more free time, but I'm still adjusting obviously and won't be able to be online while I'm at work.

"working in a library must be so peaceful"
i spent 15 minutes today trying to explain to some grown ass lady that we can't move our fiction books featuring parallel universes into our nonfiction science section just because she watched a youtube video about them
