Transgenders
There has been a lot on the internets and news lately about transgenders and where they can poo. I saw a South Park episode about it a few months back and it was epic. I find myself watching this new Orlando Pride game and I wondered, does it stop at poo or will this trend continue to sports? If this had happened 18 years ago I could have been the best women’s goalkeeper in the world. I could have won several Women’s World Cup’s and been paid hundreds of dollars to do it. Maybe I could have received some free hair product too, I don’t know...the possibilities are endless.

Actually, this has been a shit two weeks. My father-in-law got a tracheostomy for his throat cancer, my son had to have a conscious sedation because of a splinter in his eyeball, and now my wife had to have surgery. What gives? Here is the story with the surgery. Over the past year, and getting progressively more frequent, my wife had been experiencing severe abdominal pain. A few trips to the ER and we had no answers. Thursday I talked her into going to the doctor who, after an exam, sent her to get an ultrasound. Ultrasound showed her gallbladder was gull of gallstones. The pain became severe so I took her to the ER at Halifax Port Orange. After bloodwork and an exam we were told she would be having surgery, and was transferred to the main Halifax Hospital by ambulance. By noon the next morning her gallbladder was removed. What does your gallbladder do you might ask? According to Web MD the gallbladder is basically used to store bile from the liver and helps breaking down fat. Oddly enough I found out that the gallbladder is totally useless. Evolution needs to get rid of that thing. According to the US Library of Medicine in an article about laparoscopic gallbladder removal the surgery is done because of gallstones or if the gallbladder is no longer functional. Andreas gallstones were actually blocking her bile duct and her liver was inflamed. Her liver enzymes were elevated as well. Luckily the surgery was a success and after 2 days in the hospital we are safe at home.

Video
This day totally sucked. So, maybe two weeks back, at daycare this kid threw a bunch of dirt into my son’s eyes. The people at the daycare did an amazing job at irrigating his eyes and let me know about what happened right away. That was a Thursday. Fast forward to Saturday and my wife noticed something stuck in his eyeball. We took him to Florida Hospital New Smyrna (Bert Fish) where they put some dye in his eye and looked at it under a black light. Sure enough, there is something lodged into his eyeball. Right where the iris and sclera meet. An attempt to remove it with a cotton swab was unsuccessful. We were told to follow up with an Ophthalmologist. Monday morning I got an appointment for a Tuesday morning visit. Tuesday morning came, and after many attempts the Doctor was unable to remove the object. Something about a 4yr old and tweezers to the eye don’t work together. The Doctor said the next step was to Halifax Health to have Aj put under by conscious sedation and he would be willing to come over and do the removal if the ER physician wanted. What a blessing he was. My son is a fighter. It took 4 of us to hold him down for his IV. Then he was given Ketamine and Versed, and then a little more. Finally, after several attempts Dr Geiss was successful. This video above is the meds wearing off. Aj called it his dizzy medicine. Kid is hilarious.

I went for a surf last week at Bethune Beach and it got me thinking about the history of that area. I had always heard that that area was named after Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of Bethune Cookman College. I also heard that it was the only beach in the area that African Americans were allowed to go to back in the day. Looking for more information I decided to do a little searching and reading. I came across the website for the Bethune Beach Property Owners Association that I was hoping would shed a little light on the subject for me. However, I was slightly disappointed. Other than confirming the naming rights to the area, there was nothing in the history about it’s true roots. Disappointing that a website designed to promote the official history of the area decided to omit the truth about it’s inception. They make it seem like it was a fairly innocuous acquisition by the Bethune Corporation in 1939 of 189 acres of land, divided up into lots, and sold to individuals for vacation homes.
Luckily I came across this Sun Sentinel article that had information that was exactly what I was looking for. According to this article Bethune Beach was “one of the few beaches open to and owned by blacks before integration”. Interestingly enough there was only 3 beaches open to African Americans in the entire state of Florida at the time: Bethune Beach, American Beach in Jacksonville, and Butler Beach near St. Augustine. The tipping point of it’s foundation was in the beginning of the 1940′s when white police officers and white citizens had a group of African Americans escorted off the “whites only” beach. Could you imagine?
I sent an email to the president of the Bethune Beach Association and asked why the omission of the bulk of their history. There’s a massive amount of information of Turtle Mound and the Timucuan tribe, but just an obscure amount of information regarding Bethune Beach. It’s not called “Turtle Mound Beach” or “Timucuan Beach”. I just think, in the spirit of transparency, maybe history should be accurately told as to not repeat itself.

Cancer update
Monday’s surgery is just to have a tracheostomy. Billy’s airway is so swollen its only about the size of a straw. The trach is for airway protection until the laryngectomy can happen in a few weeks.

Laryngeal Cancer
After some deliberation I have decided to give this blog business another shot. Hopefully I can use it as a way to put into various forms of media, my thoughts and feelings. Maybe even use it therapeutically. Ironically, this may be the perfect time in my life to do this as we have some heavy stuff happening in the family right now.
My father in law’s throat cancer is back. It appears to be a squamos cell carcinoma that is located by his vocal cords. I don’t have all of the details at this time, but I am under the impression he will be having a Laryngectomy on Monday. According to the University of Rochester Medical Centers Health Encyclopedia “Learning to Speak again After Laryngeal Surgery” a Laryngectomy is often the most definitive way in dealing with laryngeal cancers. Basically the trachea is separated from the upper airway, the voice box is removed, and the trachea is diverted to an opening in the neck called a “stoma”. After recovery another surgery takes place where an artificial voice box is inserted allowing him to speak again. The surgery is at UF Health in Orlando.
My father-in-law is like a second father to me. It’s difficult to explain the respect and admiration I have for him. He’s not my wife’s biological father. He owes us nothing. And yet he has embraced us as his own and I will be forever grateful. I feel fortunate right now to be a respiratory therapist with a wife who is graduating from the Respiratory Care Program in May. Now we can hopefully repay him for all the help he has and is providing for us, by having the skills and knowledge to help him in his time of need. Recovery is not going to be easy. We ask for prayer during this time and I will update when I am able.
