So I recently found my old photobucket account and what did I find but one of if not the earliest artwork I ever posted on the internet...fanart of Avian, the fursona of Tess and mascot(?) of Chicken Smoothie (Was it ever settled whether Avian counted as a mascot? I remember Tess not being comfortable with that in 2009 but it looks like she's leaned into it since). So, what would I do but draw it again?

I'm thinking about applying to be a general helper on CS! Could I ask you if there's anything you would say/advice you might give to someone who wants to apply?

Heya; this is gonna be long bc I can be rambly, sorry about that lol So honestly, personally I feel the first part of applying - filling out the application form- is pretty straightforward. Just be honest with your answers, don’t feel the need to amend any of it to make things sound better or more/less modest, and just use it as an opportunity to tell us a bit about what you have to offer. The application is essentially a way for you to advertise yourself to the team - a quick way of persuading the reader why they should take a closer look at your profile and post history. The team will form its own opinions on whether or not you might make a good helper, but on the application its up to you to tell us why you think so. Things that will help you make an impression are all about what skills and traits you bring with you. Are you patient and good at explaining things in simple terms, do you enjoy actively participating in the community even outside of ‘helper duties’, what makes your personality a good match for the GH role? Do you have special “qualifications” that you think would be useful? Maybe you’re an experienced trader who posts on the FTT a lot, maybe you wrote some nice guides, maybe you make really fancy BBCode forms and can help anyone who can’t get their signature to look right, or maybe you use the oekaki a lot and can explain to a new user how to use it? Try to think of typical things people on CS commonly do/need help with, and if you’re good at that, feel free to list it. I’d also say that while already knowing a lot about CS is definitely a good thing, you shouldn’t beat yourself up over it if you’re a user who has less “site lore” experience. Things that you should already have a high degree of confidence about are the rules and the general workings of the game, but nobody knows everything - you definitely don’t need to worry if you don’t come into the job knowing obscure trivia. It’s also much for your benefit if you have a post history to back up your claims. Pretty much every time applications open we’ll have a sudden spike in people posting on the help and introductions board, and while we appreciate people’s efforts to help out, we really like to see people whose post history shows that they’ve already had a helpful and friendly presence before the apps.

That doesn’t mean you’ve had to be present on the help board specifically. What i mean is that if we can see, for example, that you’re the kind of person who takes their time to answer people’s questions on event threads while you chat, or you make an effort to give insightful trade advice when you can, that’s positive, and personally I feel this has a lot more weight than JUST showing us you can answer a question thread. (But don’t let it dissuade you from trying to help people during the application period, of course! Any post you make is a way for us to see how you approach questions and how good you are at solving them and explaining things.)

Also, it should go without saying that we have certain behavioral expectations for people who want to join us as helpers. You’re not breaking the rules if you are a ninja trader, but we don’t want someone who takes advantage of inexperienced traders to be a GH. There’s nothing stopping you from airing your annoyances and grudges with users on a salt blog, but you might wanna ask yourself if you’re suited for the GH position if your instinctual reaction to conflict or tests of patience is that. Being a GH shouldn’t just be a pleasant experience for the users who interact with you - it should also be fun and enjoyable for /you/. Apart from that, I don’t really have any advice to share. Everything I have said or could say really just boils down to: ask yourself why you think you’d enjoy and be good at the helper job, then tell us the answers.
