Without a word, Hakuryuu slinks up beside the flame      emperor  — his emperor  — and lays his weary head      to  rest  on  the  other’s  supportive,   broad  shoulders.

Gee, for a moment there, Hakuryuu almost wanted to       see Kouen again. Ah, there goes the moment. A petal       blown into the wind. It’s going.... It’s gone.

For a moment there are no words, and humiliation taints ivory with a faint pink hue. A discrete cant of chin shields his visage from scrutiny’s gaze. To compare him to his mother was vile and putrid, and the emperor’s throat constricts with the effort it took not to gag. Kouen’s son spoke without discipline, tone laced with malice and perhaps a hint of jealousy. When icy mismatched hues meet with Koujou’s again, there is a tight smile.
“That’s none of your business. Your father, unlike his, is             no fool. By making a slight at me, you are insulting him             and your family. Move aside.”

hakuryuu had a nasty habit of playing this game, a game where he thought he was king and everyone else was beneath him. so what, he’d split the kou empire, caused civil war, usurped kouen’s throne, and now he thought that gave him the right to be condescending to everyone else? koujou wished he wasn’t bound by his duty and position. he would like to show hakuryuu a thing or two about their standings.
❝ don’t play that game with me. you’re not             visiting kouen just for political reasons.             if you’re aiming to be another gyokuen to             someone else’s koutoku, look elsewhere. ❞

The newly arrived magi was not the only one in the room getting frustrated. Not only had this reunion not gone as expected, but Judar absolutely refused to speak more than a few sentences at a time with him upon arrival. Surely there was something plaguing the man’s mind, otherwise they wouldn’t be repelling each other to this degree. Distance had grown in the time they spent apart, and now it had become much more evident in their mannerisms. There was not much he could do unless he was met halfway.
So he settles for resting his own weary limbs, worn down from overexertion and work, dreadful work, lying down at the foot of the bed. The silence is stifling; a lull seeps into his skin and bites bitterly at his throat. At this point, he’s not sure what he expected. Nothing ever went according to plan  — Sinbad had made sure of that. Molars make a meal out of his cheek, grinding at the flesh. Even now, the wounds feel fresh and exposed, and a shiver runs down his back. How many nights had he spent in isolation now, shaking with pure, unadulterated anger?
Even when surrounded by others, he had never felt so alone.
An arm slings over his face, particularly shielding his eyes. In the bout of silence that had hushed the two, vile thoughts begin to fester, gnats swarming within his mind. Thoughts that ate away at his rotting rationality and feasted upon his well concealed fears. Was the magi just tolerating him for old time’s sake? Drastic changes had occurred since their last meeting, and an indelible barrier had formed. Guilt would now smother him as he recalls his broken promises, his reassurance that he would not disappoint, and when this lack of air had become unbearable, he snaps under the pressure.
“Judal,” he starts, trepidation seeping into his tone, “do you hate me?”
His words hang heavily now, lingering long after they had been spoken. The absurdity could not be overstated, and Hakuryuu regrets even saying anything in the first place. And so he laughs, awkwardly and airy, breath being forced through his lungs, before he rolls over to one side and faces the protruding bundle under the sheets.
“I’m sorry. I can take my leave now, if you’d prefer that.”
۞ ― Judar paid little mind to Hakuryuu’s griping at him. He was still horribly exhausted, and having been bedridden for several days, all of his limbs felt like lead weights. Even moving around enough to look up at Hakuryuu was irksome. The magi frowned, watching as his hair was let go and gently began shifting on the bed in what was perhaps an attempt to stretch out his limbs.
It was strange being back… granted it all hadn’t sunk in with how much he’d rested, but seeing his old room again was both a bizarre and comforting sight. Then all too fast that comfort was taken away as his covers were stripped and his bared skin (minus the presence of bandages was revealed to the cold air. Judar shuddered once and weakly curled up, glaring daggers up at the new emperor, now that he was even more disrupted from what had been a rare chance at rest from years upon years of unrest. If Judar had the strength he would’ve clocked a fist to the young man’s jaw for it.
As humorous as it was that Hakuryuu thought the simple offering of peaches would be enough to tempt the magi out of bed, Judar only puffed a breath out and turned his head away with pouty cheeks.
Tumblr media
“I’m not getting out of bed for peaches when I can order my own. I’m going back to bed, fuck off,” he grumbled, grabbing the edges of the covers and throwing them back over himself. This time however, Judar was sure to throw them far enough to cover his head from the light gleaming into the room as well.

Ah yes, the guard dog of the west’s palace. Without fail, he would hang nearby, barking profanities until his owner would speak a single word — an effective muzzle. He’d then proceed to slink away with his tail between his legs and nary a glance over his shoulder until the next time. His presence is addressed with the slightest of nods from the emperor.
“You might be surprised to know that these meetings are              typically mutual agreements. Don’t you wish for the East              and West to find diplomatic solutions rather than war?”

Although his first choice would have been a chastisement of the oracle, he decides to have a little fun with this one. After all, Sinbad wasn’t in the vicinity. Being dead serious all the time put a damper on Judal’s mood, and the magi was always easier to deal with when happy.
“It would explain how... incompetent he can be at times.”

“That didn’t sound much like a question, Hakuryuu, so I won’t answer that!”
A laugh passes parted lips as he takes a step back to look the other’s facial expression over. Ah, Hakuryuu didn’t seem too annoyed, perhaps this could be considered an accomplishment! Though, the fact that he seemed pretty unfazed by the mouse on his desk was entertaining enough. Any normal person and there would be screaming. Guess it was a good thing Hakuryuu wasn’t just any person.

Diaphragm heaves breath sodden with minor annoyance in response to his magi’s meddling. Apparently it was too much to ask for some peace and quiet — two things Judal abhorred by nature — even when the emperor was clearly invested in his work. Pen set aside and ink now properly covered again, he lifts the carcass up by its tail and dangles it over the side of his desk. Poor thing, falling victim to the other’s sheer boredom.
“I’m not quite sure what you want me to do with this.”
