Some of my thoughts about disliking characters being OOC (Out of Character) in fanworks.

This isn’t about anything specific, I’m just talking about this phenomenon on a general level.

Pretty much every fanwork makes the characters more or less OOC. You just don’t pay that much attention to it when the fan creator’s vision of the character aligns with your own. As long as the characters are OOC in a way that fits how you perceive them and how you project on them, you are just fine with the end result.

People start to complain about characters being OOC when they don’t match their idea of that character. They take offense when someone else has a headcanon that doesn’t treat the character the same way they would. The character is being OOC in the Wrong Way.

Free tip: if a character is so OOC that you can’t enjoy reading a fanfic, stop reading. The reason it makes you upset is because your brain is telling you that someone is being wrong on the Internet—but the truth is that we are all wrong. None of us will get the characterisation 100% correct, because we are all adding our own perspective to what we create.

If you think the other person is more wrong than you, and you feel the obligation to call them out on that, I kindly suggest you get some perspective, remind yourself it’s fiction that’s created as a hobby, and move right along.

There are bigger hills to die on than how some random fan creator personally views a character—and none of those hills are in the fandom.

BIG pet peeve: it’s specifically bout writers (4whatever rzn) that won’t jus make an oc buh refuse 2 write vaguely. they write around *their* physicality of y/n . like they jus gotta make emphasis on how easily the reader bruises, running the fingers thru the (long n’ flow-y) hair or it sticking 2 their neck n’ bk (im not even necessarily talkin bout babyhairs). or their height, “ellie/abby looked down at y/n” (excluding size kink). like jus make em an oc! seen sm of it that even jus a sentence hinting round y/n’s physical appearance (w/o @ least stating/sharing sumthin bout it b4 hand), i get sucked outta story instantly.

sumthin probs completely unrelated 2 u: as sum1 that goes by them/them , doesn’t identify as cis, it’s rly sumthin when sum writers attempt 2 include nonbinary/genderqueer buh ONLY “afab” n’ then write everyone in the fic 2 address y/n only as “she” (plz i can’t find the fic buh it’s sumwhere)

save me s-4pphics…. save me…. that chapter was so good and so devastating but also so rewarding for oc and ellie. love that ellie is doing well in the photography world, love that amaya is doing good as well, but did feel bad for oc 💔 i know she wanted forgiveness but she has to move on. although i know ocs apology was genuine to ellie i felt really bad for ellie too because getting reminded of what you thought you got over especially randomly is suffocating, and i think you wrote that feeling perfectly, the feeling of being on edge or like you’re regressing back into someone you thought you left behind can be debilitating also. that line of amaya saying abby hates her 💔 i get it on both sides because i’m *assuming* the way oc feels about dina is the way abby feels about oc which is ironic within itself but we will see!!!

idk if this was intentional or not, but the little tidbit of her not remembering the professor was a subtle yet loud detail along w oc not remembering what happened w her mom and dads fight fully because i know that trauma can cause memory loss and i was like okkkk oc we twindem lowkey lowkey!

sorry to be sending so much i sent the abby and click!oc thing but i just love this series sm because i do think oc has some glaringly negative traits that i can see BUT at the same time i hold a lot of empathy for her, because i know what it’s like to lash out on the people that you care for and push people away. having *trauma* causes you to have responses that you can’t even make sense of yourself at times. i also think it takes a lot of self awareness and also care for yourself to realize the way you react to things isn’t normal and also to look back and reflect on the way you treated people, esp. your friends isn’t OK, regardless of how much shit you went through, and make an extra step to go therapy. hurt people hurt people sometimes, even if that wasn’t your intention.

that’s why i’m all for click!oc realizing that yeah, her trauma is the reason for her reactions and it is valid, but also realizing but even with all that growth and change, you aren’t owed forgiveness or owed anything actually, and it might be for the better. all you can do is work on yourself and try to be better and do better in the future, and i hope she does forgive herself and doesn’t wallow in what could have been but also isn’t just negating that as well. in the nicest possible way: the world can’t stop because of your trauma and it’s up to you to do better and be better, and sometimes you do have to kinda hit rock bottom to realize your behavior isn’t normal or adjusted, which kinda seems like oc has.
