one of the funniest pieces of romeo trivia out there is that every june i get really tempted to reboot the the diary of jack aubrey* (real ones (we're talking mdzs era here) will remember the jaubreyverse) for the millionth time bc i remember the gang does rainbow capitalism** and go 'damn. that was the funniest i will EVER be' . but then i can't rb it bc the lore is outdated

*the diary of jack aubrey: the title of one of my oldest oc universes (i was 13ish when it started its first iteration), which i've been revamping every once in a while for the past several years. its central conceit is that it's a world just like ours but all folkloric monsters are real and just a fact of life, but with modern technology advancements it became harder for monsters to successfully hunt human prey, and with the rise of first radio and then tv, the idea of monster hunters, as in humans that turned the tables and began hunting monsters on their own began o gain popularity, causing mass emigration to a specific region of transylvania which is the one area of the world in full monster control, and tensions in the area skyrocket when monster hunter influencers in it for social media clout begin to emigrate to the region as well, so the main demographics are poor local humans who've lived there for centuries bc they can't afford to leave, heavily armed paul brother knockoffs, and, of course, man-eating monsters (all of which hate each other btw). the catch is, and this is where it gets its name, almost of all modern monster research (as in, there are 1000+ page textbooks on the subject where the post-jack aubrey section's page count is in the single digits) was done by a single guy in the 1810s by the name of jack aubrey, a man who disappeared under mysterious circumstances at the end of the decade and whose research was published postmortem in the form of his diary (heavily censored) by his wife (who died shortly afterwards). in the 200+ years since and discussion on him from humans and monsters alike have run rampant, especially due to most names being omitted from the diary's publication, with various parties trying to slot different individuals into different roles to serve various political purposes. the most commonly agreed upon belief regarding jack, however, is that he was killed by the age-old ruler of this region, known primarily as the vampire king, and it's the strength of that rumor that has kept the region as stable and in monster control for as long as it has. the story takes place across multiple different time periods but primarily in 1810s transylvania, 1820s paris, 1920s berlin, and modern day translyvania, but the story only truly picks up when a wannabe documentarian who fancies himself as the 2nd coming of jack aubrey manages to use his rich father's connections to be able to stay in the same house that jack lived in in transylvania while he shoots his 'magnum opus', and in the process wakes up a vampire that's been dormant there for a little over 200 years. secondary characters have shifted over time but the main cast that will never not be locked in are jack aubrey, the monster world's least favorite guy, erik bathory, the vampire king, jehanne de pointe du lac, a vampiric social climber, livia aubrey (nee. westenra), jack's wife, minamoto takehira, a prototype of a monster hunter, ko kyusong, a kumiho who manages to be the monster world's 2nd least favorite guy, hana renart, a distant descendant of takehira, ko raejin, kyusong's brother and also a propagandist for erik, ligeia, a siren who is also a propagandist for erik, and nick harker, an amateur documentarian obsessed w jack aubrey.

**the gang does rainbow capitalism: a post i made in during jack aubrey 2.0 outlining a sitcom episode-esque plot involving a (now-obsolete) character offhandedly explaining corporate pride (but leaving out the bit abt ppl hating it) to raejin who thinks it'd be a good idea for the bathory regime to try it, an attempt that isn't the best but wouldn't go that poorly were it not for the internet fanbase of humans who are interested in monsters going about their annual reminders that records suggest jack aubrey was likely gay, and a burner account pointing out that erik shouldn't be pretending to be an ally if he probably was the one to kill the world's most famous gay man, a tweet that caused massive amounts of discourse and lead to attempts (by raejin) to double down without much of erik's cooperation, making things worse and ultimately resulting in an awkward public coming out by erik publicly described as "probably fake" and "a way to deflect criticism", which is p much when someone finally doxxed the op of the og tweet and it was discovered that it was kyusong all along and the drama suddenly grinds to a halt bc he's infamous among monsters and humans alike by this point and known as a bit of a grifter so ppl just dismiss away anything he says
