I designed the cast-on edge a little bit differently from the way you may be used to starting a shawl, so I’ve included a full tutorial with lots of photos in the pattern. 🧶🗓Mark your calendars! Joyous Shawl will be released tomorrow, August 17th at 9am (central). I am so excited to finally share my latest knitting pattern with you, Joyous Shawl. This is such a fun one to knit. The shawl is a crescent shape, although I took a little inspiration from sweater knitting to make the top edge more of a rounded “neckline”. I think you are going to like how it wears! The body of the shawl is knit in wide bands of garter stitch dotted with just enough bobbles to keep things interesting. I used beautiful yarns from @barrettwoolco in their Woolens Sport Weight line. I love the colors together, don’t you? I have more photos & all the information coming this week. I think that’s because Garden Swing Shawl is a very practical wardrobe staple. The shawl is an oversized rectangular wrap that uses 10 #miniskeins of yarn. I just love the @sweetgeorgia Party of Five sets, so I used two sets for my Garden Swing Shawl. The sample was knit using Sea to Sky and Cobblestone. Have you wanted to give Continental knitting a try? Watch me in slo-mo to get the hang of how to knit Continental style.

I have the working yarn almost parallel with the back of the left hand needle. My index finger is pushed through to open up a space between the working yarn and the needle, while the other three fingers just hang on to both the needle and the yarn. I don’t feel I need to, but if you prefer, you can wind the working yarn around one or more of your fingers to get a little more tension. When I make the knit stitch, I’m inserting the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle & using the needle to scoop that working yarn. I pull it through and swipe the stitch off the left needle. Are you ready to give Continental style knitting a try? Some find it to be faster & less stressful on the hands and wrists.

Have you tried casting on your knitting project using the crochet cast on method? It’s easier than you think & makes a nice clean edge that matches the look of a standard bind off. Start with a slip knot on the crochet hook. Cross the crochet hook and the knitting needle to form a T with the hook in front. Pull the working yarn around the back of the T formation & up over the top of the knitting needle. Pull the working yarn through the stitch using the crochet hook. The important thing here is to bring the working yarn back around back of the T formation again by crossing it BETWEEN the hook and needle. Watch me a few times & you’ll see what i mean.

‼️25% off Stay Cool Shortie Socks pdf pattern ends 5/31‼️ Here’s a closer look at the colorwork panel on my latest pattern Stay Cool Shortie Socks. I thought it would be helpful to give you some pointers on colorwork socks, in case this will be your 1st pair. If you’ve seen any of my sock patterns before, you might notice that I enjoy working the colorwork on the instep. There are a few reasons for this. For one, I can SEE the design when I have my shoes off & feet up relaxing at home. It’s no fun to have the design hidden under my pant leg. Another reason is that I find the fit works out nicely here. I didn’t bother to adjust my needle size when knitting the colorwork band (although you certainly could). Having the fit just a tiny bit snugger around the instep keeps my sock on nicely. That’s especially helpful in a short sock. To keep the knitting loose, I don’t catch my floats all that often. Maybe every 5th or 6th stitch. Another trick I’ve seen is to turn the sock inside out while knitting the colorwork - running all your floats along the outside of the work. It looks weird, but people swear by it. Lastly, I think it is most helpful to find yarns that are either all the same brand (or if it’s indie dyed, same base yarn) - the closer you can get to similar weigh and twist to the yarn, the easier it’s going to be to knit up into a colorwork pattern.
