if you don’t know what’s currently happening in minnesota (minneapolis to be specific) with teachers and the school board, please read:
on march 8th, 2022, minneapolis public school teachers went on strike.
“the minneapolis federation of teachers is asking the district to limit class sizes, pay for additional mental health supports for students and increase wages for both classroom teachers and educational support professionals” - mpr news
around 600 teachers in minneapolis have left in the last 2 years alone, they only make $71,535 on average, tens of thousands less than other districts in our state, and education support professionals only make about $24,000 a year. that is not a living wage.
school returned on march 29th, and teachers won some, with an anti bias/anti racist council, an increase for educational support professionals from $24k to $35k, bonuses up to $6000, class size caps, and mandatory mental health support for every secondary school.
but these still aren’t living wages, the class size cap is 44 (in some current classes, there are 40+ students, way too many for a singular teacher to handle), and there’s about one counselor for every thousand kids
and even worse, students, teachers, and families are being punished for the teacher’s very legal strike. to quote school board treasurer kimberly caprini at the board meeting on march 29th, she wants to “teach a lesson about consequences”
consequences involve punishment, and it’s illegal to punish anyone for a legal strike.
the most recent school board meeting didn’t have spanish, somali, or asl interpreters, which they are legally required to have, just another way to prevent the community from accessing information.
the strike was dragged out so long as a way to punish teachers, teachers would make a proposal and the board would take several days for a response, eventually forcing teachers to cave before losing insurance
lack of individualized policies for schools, instead, blanket punishment.
schools will be pushed until june 24th, extended by 40+ minutes, in the heat, most elementary and middle schools don’t have air conditioning, and several schools don’t get out originally until 3:45, which will keep children at schools until nearly 5pm, in non air conditioned, sweltering heat.
food service and bus drivers haven’t agreed to work the extra two weeks, and the city buses aren’t changing their routes, and while the school board insists that it’s to support the students, making things mandatory and not providing anything students actually need does the exact opposite, they’re just punishments for the teachers trying to improve the terrible conditions in the district.
school board members are insisting it’s best for kids that need things like credit recovery, but if that’s the issue, why not make the choice individual? the majority of the students of color in the district work, so many students have family to take care of and bills to pay, as well as forcing teachers to work longer days and even longer into the year, this does nobody any good.
april 12th is the next school board meeting, and they still aren’t hearing students, teachers, or families out.
that’s not to say there hasn’t been any change, superintendent ed graff is leaving his job after his contract expired, and two school board members (cerillo and el-amin) voted no to extending both school hours and school days, but that isn’t enough.
students and families have been writing emails, calling in, and protesting, but are still not being listened to.
another issue with students trying to send emails is the spyware minneapolis introduced to monitor all of our google accounts. in things like emails, google docs, etc, it flags words, labeling documents with words like “gay” and “trans” as bullying, and sending notices to the assistant principal without reviewing the actual information the email or document contains first.
they introduced this as a way to “prevent bullying”, instead of providing legitimate mental health and student support, and has done so much more harm than good.
not only has this outed several students, and gotten students reported for things like “being a suspected sex trafficker” and “writing a suicide note” for literal school projects, but now they’re also using it to prevent emails to the board from being sent.
this is also extremely illegal, and the aclu is in discussions with our teachers to figure out how to help end this.
for now, you can donate to the strike fund to assist teachers here: https://www.mft59.org/strike-fund
emails and calls can be sent to the following, demanding the school board get rid of the mandatory extra time and days, and live-streams from school board meetings will be linked below (unfortunately they are inaccessible, due to the incompetence of the school district)
