Infosys Techie Killed At Hotel Near Pune, Boyfriend Seen On CCTV Arrested
A software engineer working with Infosys was shot dead Saturday night at a hotel on Pune outskirts, police have said. The woman's boyfriend has been arrested for allegedly murdering her, and a pistol recovered from him.
Tumblr media
The incident took place at a Oyo hotel in Pimpri Chinchwad's Hinjewari area. After police received information about a firing incident, they reached the hotel and recovered the woman's body. The body was on the floor and blood stains were found in the room.
According to police, the woman has been identified as Vandana Dviwedi and her boyfriend as Rishabh Nigam. Both were originally from Uttar Pradesh. The investigation so far has found that the two were in a relationship and an altercation led to the murder. The accused is now being questioned for more information about the tragic incident.
Rishabh came under the police's scanner after CCTV footage from the hotel showed him exiting the room late at night. Police then started scanning vehicles at checkpoints and caught him.
"The hotel room booking was done in the name of Vandana and Rishabh. So he is our prime suspect. Further probe is on," senior police officer Vishal Hire told the media.

Congress vs BJP As Hanuman Flag Removed In Karnataka, Situation Tense
In Keragodu village of Karnataka's Mandya, a controversy over a Hanuman flag has led to political confrontations, protests, and police intervention. The incident took place last week when a group of men erected a 108-foot flagpole and raised a Hanuman flag.
Tumblr media
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been issued in the village because of the tense situation.
The village panchayat had granted permission for the installation of the flagpole, but complaints were filed against it, prompting officials to request the removal of the Hanuman flag. Villagers, however, stood firm in their decision, accusing a few individuals of attempting to politicise the matter. A large police contingent was deployed, and members of the BJP, JD(S), and Bajrang Dal joined villagers in protesting against the removal.
Protests escalated on Saturday when villagers closed their shops in defiance. Yesterday, Gram Panchayat officials visited the village to remove the flag, leading to a gathering of villagers chanting slogans of 'Go Back' in protest against the officials.
The controversy took a political turn when banners of local Congress MLA Ravi Kumar were vandalised during the protests. In response, police presence was heightened in the region, anticipating further unrest.
BJP leaders and Hindu activists strongly condemned the removal of the flag. The BJP announced plans to hold protests in all districts of Karnataka, with a specific protest scheduled at Mysuru Bank Circle in Bengaluru today.
To quell the unrest, police resorted to lathi charge and replacing the Hanuman flag with the national flag on the flagpole. Official sources revealed that the flag post's installation was funded by residents of Keragodu and 12 neighboring villages, with the active involvement of BJP and JD(S) workers.
Opposition parties criticised the Congress-led government for the police intervention, with BJP leader R Ashoka condemning the government's "anti-Hindu stance." He argued that the Hanuman flag was raised with the gram panchayat's approval, questioning the sudden removal by the Congress government.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responded to the situation, expressing concern that a 'bhagwa dwaja' (saffron flag) had been raised instead of the national flag.
"It is not right. I have asked (the authorities concerned) to hoist the national flag."
The District In-charge Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy clarified that the flagpole's location falls under the panchayat's jurisdiction, and permission was initially obtained for hoisting the national flag on Republic Day.
"There may be politics behind it (the installation of the Hanuman flag replacing the National Flag). I don't know who is behind it …This country works under democracy and the Constitution. Tomorrow they may say they want to hoist the flag (saffron flag) in front of the DC's office. Can it be allowed? If it is permitted at one place, it will extend to other places. This is the only reservation," he said.
"We are not here to hurt our youth. I have spoken to officials, police and youths. We are ready to install the Hanuman flag at a private place or near a temple. We will support them. We too are Rama Bhaktas," he added.

China's Xi Jinping's "Break New Ground" Offer To France, Days After Macron's India Visit
Chinese President Xi Jinping has offered to "break new ground" to give a fillip to the China-France ties, days after French President Emmanuel Macron's high-profile visit to India during which the two countries unveiled an ambitious defence roadmap besides intensifying cooperation in the strategic Indian Ocean and the Indo-Pacific region.
Tumblr media
Macron's visit to India also coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France.
In his message on the occasion, Xi said "As today's world is once again at a critical crossroads, China and France should jointly open up a path of peace, security, prosperity and progress for human development."
Xi said China attaches great importance to the development of bilateral ties and he stands ready to work with Macron to take the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations as an "opportunity to uphold fundamental principles, break new ground, build on past achievements, open up a new future, and make China-France comprehensive strategic partnership more solid and dynamic," the official media reported.
China has offered to step up French imports to the country, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.
"We will continue to unleash consumer and investment market demand, continue to expand the import of high-quality products and services from France", he said and hoped that France too will provide Chinese companies with a fair, just and predictable business environment.
China prioritises ties with France as Macron is pushing Europe to become a third bloc, a balancing force between the US and China.
Hailing China-France ties, Chinese official media has called for stepping up cooperation in high-tech areas.
"Scientific and technological cooperation between France and China has been a cornerstone of their relationship. From aerospace and the nuclear industry to renewable energy, the two countries have made significant strides in joint research and development", state-run China Daily said in its editorial.
President Macron was the sixth leader from France to be the chief guest at India's 75th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi on January 26.
Beijing kept a wary watch on Macron's visit to India as Paris is emerging as a key defence partner to New Delhi amid efforts by the US and European Union to court India as a counterweight to counter China.
After Macron's talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two countries unveiled an ambitious defence industrial roadmap to co-develop critical military hardware besides firming up cooperation in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region, a key area of concern for China.
"Defence and security partnership has been the cornerstone of India-France partnership in the Indo-Pacific region, which includes a comprehensive range of bilateral, multinational, regional and institutional initiatives, especially in the Indian Ocean Region", the joint statement issued after Macron's visit to India said.
"They also agreed to intensify their cooperation in the Southwest Indian Ocean, building on the joint surveillance missions carried out from the French island territory of La Reunion in 2020 and 2022", it said.
The intensification of India-France cooperation in the Indian Ocean concerns China as it tries to make forays in India's backyard.
The US, India and several other world powers have been discussing the need to ensure a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of China's rising military manoeuvring in the resource-rich region.

Jadeja's LBW Dismissal Sparks DRS Debate
India batter Ravindra Jadeja looked set to complete his century as he arrived on the pitch on Day 3 of the first Test against England in Hyderabad. However, only a few runs later, England star Joe Root trapped him in front of the stumps, and the umpire had no issue in raising his finger. However, Jadeja remained unconvinced and went straight to the third umpire, opting for a DRS referral.
Tumblr media
The third umpire analysed the footage available from multiple angles, and in the end, the decision went in the favour of Root and the England team. But, that didn't stop a social media debate from triggering.
The confusion erupted in the mind of the third umpire after the Ultra Edge showed a big spike just as the ball passed the bat. But, the impact on the pad was also at the same time. Hence, it became inconclusive if the ball hit the bat before it hit the pad.
As the third umpire went for ball tracking, both the impact on the pad and on the stumps showed 'umpire's call' on the giant screen. The final decision, hence, went in the favour of the bowling side as the on-field decision was out.
Ravi Shastri, on commentary duty for the match, agreed with the decision and also explained why Jadeja didn't get the benefit of the doubt. The former India head coach also explained if the on-field decision was given in favour of the batter, Jadeja would've stayed not-out.
After Jadeja's dismissal, India didn't add much runs with the bat, with Jasprit Bumrah departing on the next ball of the over from Root. Axar Patel also couldn't score a half-century, departing a few deliveries later as India took a 190-run first innings lead against England.

"Horror Show": Priest On US Prisoner's Nitrogen Gas Execution
Convicted murderer Kenneth Eugene Smith became the first man in the US to be executed with nitrogen gas, a controversial method that was condemned by human right activists as well as the United Nations and White House.
Tumblr media
The 22-minute execution that saw the 58-year-old murderer writhing and thrashing for several minutes was described as a "horror show" by his spiritual advisor Reverend Jeff Hood. The priest who was among several people who witnessed the execution said even the prison staff were unable to hide their shock over the scene.
“There was clear shock and surprise on their faces. In that circumstance it's hard to know what is what, but I know what I saw in terms of the horror on the faces of people in front of me," Hood told The New York Post, adding that he heard audible gasps from people as Smith struggled to breathe.
It looked like a scene produced for Hollywood, he said. "It's a scene that will never leave me."
The nitrogen hypoxia execution, a method described as "untested human experiment" by human rights activists, was carried out at Alabama's Holman Prison. It marked the first change from the usual method of lethal injection in the US. The method forces the prisoner to breathe nitrogen instead of oxygen through a respirator mask.
Hood claimed that while the prison authorities assured that the method would result in instant death, the actual scene of the execution could not be far from it.
“They said all along that this was going to be nearly instantaneous. They were told this is going to be quick, easy and painless. They kept saying this is the most humane way society has ever figured out how to execute people. That he would be gone, unconscious, in seconds. What we saw last night was minutes, minutes, and minutes of a horror show," he said, adding that Smith looked like a "fish out of water, flapping over and over again."
The White House on Saturday said it was "deeply troubled" by the execution. UN human rights chief Volker Turk, the EU and civil liberties groups also expressed concern about the manner of Smith's execution.
Kenneth Eugene Smith was on death row for more than three decades after being convicted of the 1988 murder-for-hire of a pastor's wife.

Fighter Day 2: Hrithik-Deepika Film Sees Huge Growth
Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone's Republic Day release Fighter registered a "massive growth" after underperforming on its opening day. According to trade Analyst Taran Adarsh, the film benefitted from two factors - word of mouth appreciation and Republic day holiday. The mass pockets also contributed to raise the number higher on Friday. Taran Adrash predicts the film has a solid chance to set big numbers if Saturday-Sunday "maintain the speed."
Tumblr media
Fighter minted ₹ 41.20 crore on its second day of release and the total stands at ₹ 65.80 crore. Taran Adarsh wrote, "Fighter sets BO on fire, is EXTRAORDINARY on Day 2, benefits largely due to two factors: [i] Excellent feedback from audience and [ii] RepublicDay holiday… Mass pockets - which underperformed on Day 1 - witness massive growth on Day 2, thus contributing to the impressive total."
He added, "The tremendous growth on Day 2 gives the film a solid chance to march forward… If Sat and Sun maintain the speed, a massive total is certainly on the cards… Frankly, it's too early to guesstimate a figure for the 4-day extended weekend, since mass belt and spot bookings can elevate the situation on Sat and Sun multifold… So let's wait and watch."
In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave Fighter 2.5 stars and wrote, "Scripted by Ramon Chibb with Siddharth Anand, Fighter works best when it decides to slow down a tad in the second half. Its emotional high point occurs when Samsher meets Minal's father (Ashutosh Rana) and mother (Geeta Agrawal) by accident and proceeds to impress upon them the enormity of their daughter's achievements. Among the pilots in the Air Dragons team formed after the early 2019 terrorist attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama is Basheer Khan (Akshay Oberoi). He gets to spout what are by far the most patriotic lines in the film - a repeat of a poignant and patriotically pointed couplet that Shamsher recites early in the film."
Fighter, directed by Siddharth Anand, stars Hrithik and Deepika, Anil Kapoor. They are part of an elite team that is called upon to respond to a threat from across the border. The cast includes Karan Singh Grover, Akshay Oberoi, Rishabh Sawhney and Sanjeeda Sheikh.

Akhilesh Yadav Says Alliance With Congress "Off To Good Start" On 11 Seats
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav today said his party's alliance with the Congress is "off to a good start" with 11 "strong" Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.
Tumblr media
The state sends 80 members to the Lower House of Parliament and elections are due in April-May.
"Our cordial alliance with the Congress is off to a good start with 11 strong seats. This trend will move forward with the winning equation. 'INDIA' team and 'PDA' strategy will change history," Mr Yadav said in a post in Hindi on 'X'.
The development comes at a time amid strong indications that Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar may do yet another volte-face and return to the BJP-led NDA.
Mr Kumar had joined hands with RJD, founded by his former arch-rival Lalu Prasad, in August 2022 after he severed ties with the BJP.
The longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar, thereafter, embarked upon a drive to bring together all parties across the country to take on the BJP that culminated in the formation of the opposition bloc INDIA.
In case Nitish Kumar decides to return to the NDA fold, the opposition united front will take a massive hit.

Congress Chief Announces Next Move As Uncertainty In Bihar Grows
Amid reports of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his party Janata Dal (United) joining hands with the BJP, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said that he has "no information on JD(U) leaving the alliance". JD(U) is currently one of the strongest parties in the opposition's INDIA bloc which aims to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Tumblr media
"I don't have information on Janata Dal (United) leaving the alliance. I have written a letter to them. Tried to speak to them. But don't know what's on Nitish Kumar's mind," Mr Kharge told reporters today.
The Congress President said he will go to Delhi tomorrow to gather more information and figure out what is happening in Bihar.
"Tomorrow I'll go to Delhi and take full information. Let's see what will happen. We don't have information that Nitish will resign. He hasn't told us about meeting Governor," he said.
"I don't have information so can't tell you authentic. Let's see what happens," he added.
According to sources, Nitish Kumar is likely to take oath as Bihar Chief Minister again tomorrow, a record ninth time, supported by the BJP. The political churn has triggered a flurry of activities, with large-scale transfers of officers adding to the suspense. Reports of an imminent change in government are rife, casting a shadow over the current 'Mahagathbandhan' ruling coalition.
Congress has been struggling to bring all its allies in the India bloc on the same page in order to mount a strong challenge to the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls. Mr Kharge said that the party is trying their best to make everyone unite.
"We are trying our best to make everyone unite together. I've spoken to Mamata (Banerjee) and Nitish and (Sitaram) Yechury to be united. Told them we need to be united only then we can give a good fight," he said.
"India alliance will work well and democracy should be saved, whoever wants this won't take a hasty decision is what I feel," Mr Kharge added.
Nitish Kumar has convened a session of the legislature party at 10 am on Sunday. Reports suggest that he could join hands and officially stake claim to the Chief Minister post for an unprecedented ninth time, backed by the BJP later tomorrow.

BJP Collects Letters Of Support, RJD In Crisis Mode: What Next For Bihar?
In Bihar, the political landscape is undergoing significant upheaval as reports suggest Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is contemplating rejoining forces with the BJP, a party he parted ways with in 2022. This potential realignment has sparked intense speculation within political circles and raised concerns about the stability of the ruling 'Mahagathbandhan' coalition in the state. Nitish Kumar, often referred to as 'Paltu Ram' for his history of switching between political alliances, had initially left the BJP as part of an effort to consolidate opposition forces against the ruling party ahead of the 2024 elections.
Tumblr media
The recent buzz surrounding Nitish Kumar's possible return to the BJP gained momentum after the BJP awarded former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur with the prestigious Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor. Thakur, remembered as a prominent socialist leader and champion of the state's controversial alcohol prohibition policy, holds significant political sway in Bihar even today. This move by the BJP reignited discussions about Nitish Kumar's political future and the potential ramifications for Bihar's political landscape.
Adding to the intrigue, Nitish Kumar's former Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi made a cryptic statement, hinting at the possibility of political doors being open for collaboration. Meanwhile, a pivotal meeting within the INDIA alliance on January 13 saw Nitish Kumar's name proposed as Convenor, only to be met with reservations from Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee. This development underscores the complex dynamics at play within Bihar's political arena and the challenges facing coalition-building efforts.
As speculation mounts, the Bihar government's recent transfer of numerous Indian Police Service (IPS) and Bihar Administrative Service (BAS) officers has added fuel to the fire, suggesting potential shifts in leadership and power dynamics. While the BJP publicly downplays the speculation, behind-the-scenes discussions are reportedly underway, with the party eyeing a reshuffle of the Bihar cabinet and the replacement of RJD ministers. With Nitish Kumar expected to convene a session of the legislature party and potentially stake his claim for the Chief Minister post with BJP's support, Bihar's political future remains uncertain, with far-reaching implications for both state and national politics.

ISRO may postpone soft landing on Moon to Aug 27 depending on health of lander module: Official
According to ISRO Space Applications Centre Director Nilesh Desai, the focus of the scientists would be on reducing the speed of the spacecraft above the lunar surface.
Tumblr media
CHENNAI: As scientists at ISRO gear up for the soft landing of the much-awaited Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the surface of the Moon, the space agency may postpone the touchdown to August 27 in the event that health parameters of the lander module are found to be “abnormal”, a senior official has said.
ISRO had planned the soft landing of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft at 06.04 pm IST on August 23. The Moon mission was launched on July 14 at 2.35 pm from Sriharikota.
According to ISRO Space Applications Centre Director Nilesh Desai, the focus of the scientists would be on reducing the speed of the spacecraft above the lunar surface.
“The lander will try to land on the Moon’s surface from a height of 30km on August 23, and its velocity at that time will be 1.68 km per second. Our focus will be on reducing that speed because Moon’s gravitational force will also play its part,” he told PTI in Ahmedabad.
“If we do not control that speed, there will be chances of a crash landing. If any health parameter (of the lander module) is found abnormal on August 23, then we will postpone the landing to August 27,” he said.
Earlier in the day, ISRO said the mission is on schedule and it is smooth sailing for the spacecraft.
“The mission is on schedule. Systems are undergoing regular checks. Smooth sailing is continuing,” ISRO said.
Chandrayaan-3 lander module’s soft landing on the lunar surface would put India in the elite club of countries that have achieved the feat of reaching the Moon’s surface — the United States, the erstwhile Soviet Union and China.

Jharkhand: Bank officer who died by suicide was a ‘key’ CBI witness in Rs 4 crore fraud case
Family members have also held the police and bank officials responsible for his death as he was being harassed regularly and sought justice from Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
Tumblr media
RANCHI: In an unfortunate incident, a bank manager died by suicide allegedly for being harassed regularly by police in the name of investigation even after being given a clean chit by the CBI in a loan fraud case involving approximately Rs 4 crores.
Calling himself an honest, upright and innocent person in the suicide note left by him, he has held Jharkhand police and bank officials responsible for this extreme step taken by him under severe mental stress and trauma.
The Bank Manager Supriyo Majumdar died by suicide by hanging himself at his Ranchi-based residence on Sunday. Family members have also held the police and bank officials responsible for his death as he was being harassed regularly and sought justice from Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
The deceased’s sister alleged that it is not a suicide but a murder as he was compelled to end his life.
“My question is directed to the Ramgarh police as to how could they harass anybody who has already been given a clean chit by the CBI. Who has given them the right to interrogate a person if he was given a clean chit by CBI?”
She also requested CM Hemant Soren to come forward so that such an instance does not happen again anywhere in Jharkhand, further adding that, her brother even did not get any support from the bank officials.
The suicide note left by Majumdar suggests that he ended his life after Jharkhand police officials in Ramgarh in connivance with the senior manager (credit), BK Singh, and chief manager and branch head, Prafulla Kumar Behra, started a parallel investigation in the case and mounted undue pressure on him to give his statement before the police though he had helped the CBI collecting vital evidence in a loan fraud case.
According to family members, after clearing the Bank PO exam, he joined the Ramgarh Branch of Bank of India where a financial misapplication was done in disbursing a loan for 15 tankers in which his signature was taken forcefully.
“Since the matter involved several crores, the case was referred to CBI, which, after primary interrogation gave him a clean chit and made him a government witness in the case,” said a family friend Rajeev Ranjan. Later, he was given ‘best performer’ award and posted in Ranchi along with a promotion, he added.
According to Ranjan, on Friday they had gone to Ramgarh police and showed the documents in which he was given a clean chit by CBI. The officer in charge asked them to go to the SP and when they reached his place, he was not there. They also went to the DSP but could not meet him, he said.
“A phone call was received from the Ramgarh police station asking them to come again on Monday, but on Sunday evening he ended his life under intense pressure,” Ranjan said.
Ramgarh SP, however, has assured that proper action will be taken if anybody is found guilty in the case.
“It has been alleged in the suicide note and by family members that the deceased was harassed by the police officials,” said Ramgarh SP Piyush Kumar Pandey.
Proper investigation will be done after registering an FIR in the case, said the SP, adding that they are waiting for a formal complaint in this regard.
“The banker was issued notice under section 41A of CrPC on August 12. Prior to this, the police neither talked to him nor met him,” said the SP.

Police didn't allow me to meet minor rape victim: DCW chief Maliwal ends dharna at hospital
Maliwal has been sitting on the dharna since Monday morning, claiming that she was prevented from meeting the girl.
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: DCW chief Swati Maliwal on Tuesday ended her dharna at St Stephen’s Hospital where she had gone to meet the minor girl allegedly raped by a Delhi government official.
Maliwal had sat on the dharna on Monday morning, claiming that she was prevented from meeting the girl. However, a police official said the mother of the girl did not want to meet anyone since the victim is still under observation.
Maliwal left the hospital Tuesday afternoon and could not meet the victim
Premoday Khakha, a deputy director in the city government’s women and child development department allegedly raped the girl several times between November 2020 and January 2021, according to the Delhi Police. His wife allegedly gave the girl medicine to terminate her pregnancy.
Khakha and his wife Seema Rani were arrested on Monday.
“I came here (at the hospital) at 11 am yesterday but the Delhi Police did not allow me to meet the survivor or her mother. I spent the night here. I don’t understand why the police are not allowing me to meet them,” the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson said.
She said the commission has sent a notice to the Delhi Police and the city government’s women and child development and services departments, seeking action in the matter, and it was important to meet the minor and her mother for further action.
She later posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Had I not come to meet the girl, they would have said that I didn’t bother to see her. Now when I am here, they are saying it’s a drama. Politics has fallen to such levels that politicians cannot speak the truth.”
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had Monday ordered the chief secretary to suspend the accused officer.
According to the order, during the suspension period, the officer is not permitted to leave the department headquarters without obtaining prior permission.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Sagar Singh Kalsi said Rani was produced before a court on Monday and sent to judicial custody, while Khakha will be produced in the court on Tuesday.

ISRO releases images of moon captured from 70 km altitude by Lander camera
Chandrayaan-3, launched on July 14, is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface.
Tumblr media
BENGALURU: ISRO on Tuesday released images of the Moon captured by the Lander Position Detection Camera (LPDC) of the Chandrayaan-3 mission from an altitude of about 70 km on August 19.
LPDC images assist the Lander Module (LM) of the mission, scheduled to make a soft landing on the Lunar surface on Wednesday, in determining its position (latitude and longitude) by matching them against an onboard moon reference map, the Bengaluru-headquartered national space agency said.
The ISRO on Monday released images of the Lunar far side area captured by the Lander Hazard Detection and Avoidance Camera (LHDAC).
This camera that assists in locating a safe landing area — without boulders or deep trenches — during the descent is developed by the Ahmedabad-based Space Applications Centre (SAC), a major research and development centre of ISRO.
According to ISRO, to achieve the mission objectives of Chandrayaan-3, several advanced technologies are present in the Lander such as LHDAC.
Chandrayaan-3, launched on July 14, is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface.

IMPHAL: Blockades by a tribal group on the National Highway-37, connecting Manipur’s Imphal with Silchar of Assam, were more or less cleared, as the movement of 171 trucks with essential commodities was ensured, police said on Tuesday.
However, the roadblocks on National Highway-2, which links Imphal with Nagaland’s Dimapur, by the tribal outfit continued.
Committee on Tribal Unity had on Monday reimposed blockades at a few places on NH 2 in Kangpokpi and NH 37 in Tamenglong district, demanding adequate supplies of essential commodities to Kuki-Zo communities in hill areas of Manipur.
“Movement of 171 vehicles along NH 37 with essential items has been ensured,” police said in a statement.
Strict security measures were taken up in all vulnerable locations and security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches to ensure free and safe movement of vehicles, it said.
Six people have been arrested in connection with an incident of arson in which four abandoned houses and a community hall were burnt in Imphal West a day before, while arms and ammunition were seized during search operations across several districts, the police said.
“In the intervening night of August 20 and 21, unknown miscreants set on fire four abandoned houses, one hut, and one community hall at Langol, Imphal West district. Six people have been arrested in connection with the arson,” the police said.
Search operations were conducted by security forces in the fringe and vulnerable areas of Imphal West and East, Thoubal, Kakching, Churachandpur, Tengnoupal Kangpokpi, and Bishnupur districts.
“Seven arms and 81 ammunitions were recovered from Imphal East, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal districts,” the police said.
A total of 129 checkpoints were installed in different districts of Manipur, both in the hills and the valley, and the police detained 1,369 people for violating laws across the state.
The violence in the state erupted in early May after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Since then, more than 160 people have died and several hundred were injured in ethnic clashes in Manipur.
Meiteis account for about 53 percent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 percent and reside mainly in the hill districts.
