I’ve always loved Ratigan’s design- it’s perfection. His large imposing figure (as he’s a rat, duh) compared to the rest of the cast, but because he disallows himself to be held to the regard of a rat he carries himself with immense grace. He’s so fluid and graceful for a character of his build, reflecting just how hard he’s worked to conseil his identity. It’s not that he wants to be a mouse, it’s that he doesn’t want to be perceived as a rat. Rats don’t exactly have the cleanest of reputations, and Ratigan refuses to let that fact define him. He’ll show them, he’ll show them all.

Hi. I noticed that in your Cannibal Branch AU, you draw him five fingers (other trolls have 4). Did his body mutate after prolonged cannibalism? Does he have any other defects?

Ngl that’s just on me lmao sometimes I get lazy and just do 4 fingers other days I do all five. Generally no his hands are no different other than permanent claws and stuff, usually they’re retractable. His other defects/mutations include predator adaptations, sharp teeth, night vision, etcétéra…

I’m thinking there’s already rumors of Branch being this cannibalistic troll, but Poppy doesn’t believe them, thinking he’s just lonely. It’s like oh hey I was right he’s just misunderstood to oh shit you really are a monster.

She tries to build this relationship with him and over time actually manages to get a little closer. If all goes well she can reintroduce him to their society.

Little does she know that’s exactly what he needs…

All of poppy’s friends are super hesitant to let her just “be friends” with this potentially dangerous troll. Even if he doesn’t eat other trolls, he’s clearly no one to be crossed.

I will attempt to answer what I can lmao

Yes this takes place prior to the first movie, so all the trolls are still worried about being eaten by Bergens. It’s part of how Branch gets away with this for as long as he does. He doesn’t really care much for the Bergens in general, he knows he could take one of them out quite easily if he needed too, as he’s much more focused of survival.

It takes a long while for any one in Pop Village to notice anything is up, as when a troll every few months goes missing they blame Bergens. Were he found out, yes the Trolls would be terrified of him 💀

If he were to capture other genre trolls I like to think it would reflect on his outward appearance yes, but at this point he’s unaware that there are other trolls out there.

He absolutely begins to lose his sanity. He’s able to be in control for a good while, especially when it’s early in an le spaced apart by a good month. But as he continues and the high wears off sooner, he finds he needs more and more troll sooner, and the drive to stay happy essentially drives him completely. And as with humans who eat humans we also begin to go a little crazy…

At the beginning he targets trolls that he believes deserve it. So if he were to see one being an asshole or something, sayonara. His conscious catches up to him when he starts to really care about poppy, but eventually his addiction outweighs his guilt.

He also believes his brothers are dead at this point, not wanting to believe they simply abandoned him.

Let’s say we make it to the second movie, Branch has managed to stay under the radar, but now without the Bergens to blame for disappearances it does become a little more difficult. Especially when the princess is obsessed with knowing everybody. He then learns he can go after other trolls, and quickly realized they affect him differently, both visually and emotionally. He prefers pop trolls for various reasons.

If he were to miraculously make it to the third movie (which he doesn’t) discovering his brothers are still alive would seriously send him into a downward spiral. He’s much more agressive here and would probably immediately attack JD, he wouldn’t kill him there but it crossed his mind. Not even to eat him, he’s not worth that. JD would be more cautious to work with Branch but thanks to Poppy they do go looking for Floyd. A vital different this time however is Branch hasn’t sung since losing his grandma. Things played out however differently to rescue friends and whatnot and he still refuses to try and sing again. Singing separated his brothers, killed his grandma, and nearly the whole world thanks to the rock trolls. He just can’t do it. But he’s determined to break Floyd out a different way. He doesn’t tell his brothers this.

Things are similar enough in the third movie up until rescuing Floyd. Branch isn’t against hurting Velvet or Veneer if it gets his brother back. He’s still insanely upset with him, of course, but… he’s not dead… something branch never let himself hope for. Though to call it hope may not quite describe the feeling. If they were alive, it meant they actively *chose* to stay away from him and each other.

Anyway Branch gets to Velvet, threatening her brother with her life. Veneer of course immediately lets Floyd out of the Diamond, this is insanity.

Yay they’re all together. Branch has some weird feelings about all of it, and he doesn’t know what to think. If he hadn’t gone crazy before, this would certainly be the trigger.

Now I would like to think Branch would get caught before discovering his brothers, but honestly it doesn’t really matter, it’s all just fun shit anyway.

Getting caught would be devastating news, particularly for poppy who was actually warming up to Branch. She’s the one who discovers Branch’s little hobby on accident whilst waiting for him in his bunker. Some trolls just never know when to shut up.

“Oh Poppy… I had really hoped it wouldn’t come to this…”

As for any other questions I would love to answer them or leave them up for interpretation. I would love to see other ideas and suggestions as this is all still very speculative and subject to extreme change!

Branch is already so much of an outcast as it is, she doesn’t bring it up to him.

- branch has more predator like features, such as sharp canines, claws, and reflective pupils

I like drawing Branch a bit rougher for this AU since he really fell into survival but also agression. He doesn’t wear Floyd’s jacket as he holds more of a resentment towards his brothers, though he does still have it, unable to completely let go, especially as he assumes they too were eaten by Bergens after leaving like his grandmother.

Uuuhhmmmm AU where instead of coping the incredible way he did in the films, out of desperation to be feel happiness again Branch takes a page out of the Bergans’ book…

So yeah. C@nnibal AU 💀 can’t believe I just typed that but here we are.

Branch is far less sociable than even in the first movie with poppy still being the only one to attempt to reach out to him. It’s only after Creek never returns from his spiritual retreat Poppy starts to notice something is up.

I figure it works in an addiction type way, how after a while in order to get the same high you need more of the substance. So where at first a troll could last a good month or so, dwindles down to weeks and even days. But if there’s one thing Branch is good at, it’s being ignored.

And even after Poppy discovers it’s Branch, he’s manipulated her to the point she doesn’t immediately tell others what’s going on. In this or perhaps another separate au of this, Branch tricks Poppy into eating troll as well, now incriminating her as well as influence. It all really just becomes a game of revenge after a point.
