National Threatened Species Day

September 7th is National Threatened Species Day in Australia, commemorating the day that the last Tasmanian tiger (posthumously nicknamed “Benjamin”) died in the Hobart Zoo in 1936. The year 2015 marks the 79th anniversary of Benjamin’s death.

Tasmania has almost 650 animals and plants listed as rare, vulnerable or threatened. Habitat loss and competition by introduced predators continue to threaten the existence of these unique organisms. [x]
