If you want the rest of your body to live up to your face's standards then yes, you'll do what I say.

What does a man have to do to wear whatever colour they want? You can’t tell me how to live my life.

You're precious. But no, still not your colour.

So what? People can look behind my ego and then they can see me in a hot pink dress.

Keep thinking that, honey. One day your ego will be so big it won't matter what you wear because no-one will be able to see you behind it anyway.

Wrong, everything is my colour.

Surprised by his actions, Vanessa didn't even put up a fight once as he went through his motions, only responding delicately. The emotion she felt was overwhelming and all she could do was try and even focus on what was going on. Slowly but surely, her hands wrapped around his neck and pulled him into her more as their mouths were locked. It was confusing to be in this position but definitely not unwelcome to the girl. His lips felt so foreign against her own but they felt more right than anyone else's had and she felt her cheeks flush at the thought.
Letting a small smile appear on her face as he spoke, Vanessa noticed her tears were no more. "Would I ever lie to you?" she asked but knew this was probably a bad question in the first place since lying was all she did to anyone anymore. Moving her hands up to softly caress his jaw. "I think I'm in love with you too, Ev."

Instantly, Vanessa knew her reaction had been wrong but it was all she could think of to say. What else were you supposed to say when your lifelong best friend tells you that they're in love with you? It was a lot to absorb in one go and their entire relationship had taken about a million steps forward in just one sentence. Seeing him pace made her worry and she went to go say his name until he spoke again.
"N-no!" the brunette exclaimed and stood immediately, running over to where he was and wrapping her arms around his middle and pulling him back. Nestling her head into his back, Vanessa tightened her arms and sniffed slightly,  not realising she'd begun to cry.
"I...I love you too, okay?"

Vanessa was actually glad that Evan had decided to take the lead in the conversation as she was completely lost on what to say. She actually had so much she wanted to say but no way to correctly articulate them. Every sentence she seemed to form in her mind became a mess in her mouth. It was okay, though. Evan had always been better at these situations anyway, dealing with emotions on the spot and not just avoiding confrontation. It was one of the thing she admired most about him.
Hearing all the good things he was saying made her blush and although she agreed with a couple of them, she wriggled slightly in her seat as she carried on listening. Vanessa had never been the best at taking compliments but rather than being overly modest like some people, she just kept it to herself. "I mean it was a little forward but it's not like I'd expect anything less from you," she added, not wanting him to feel bad about what he'd done.
A tiny gasp came from Vanessa as he said the 'l' word and specifically the fact he was 'in' it with her. They'd always said that word loosely around eachother in the most platonic way possible but now to just come out with it. Her heart suddenly felt heavy and she became more aware of how fast it was racing than she'd ever been before. "W-what?"

Unfortunately, Vanessa remembered Kenny from one of her many trips to visit Evan when they were younger. It was his favourite place to take her because he knew how much she loathed to be out on the dirty streets and buying food without knowing where it was sourced. She never cared if it looked 'prissy', she just cared a lot about her food and where it came from. Or at least, she used to. Now, Vanessa ate just enough to keep her out of hospital but it was still pathetic portions. It'd be half a bowl of soup or a bowl full of salad without any main ingredients. It was just easier to eat alone now too, so typically she isolated herself.
As Evan stretched, the girl's eyes couldn't help but wander to the slight area where his shirt lifted up to spy his abs before glancing away as soon as she'd looked. No matter what they were, Vanessa would never pass the chance to look at a hot guy. In fact, this wasn't the first time she'd looked at Evan in this way but before it'd just been mentally trashed because they were best friends, now however, things were slightly different. Weren't they?
"So, uh..." Vanessa began, wanting to break the silence that had come over the both of them. It seemed that neither of them were actually done with thinking things through but maybe it was a sign that they needed to talk. Plus, if it would get him to not force her to eat any more of the hideous pancakes, anything was better than that. "That kiss, huh?"

A laugh came from Vanessa as she though of the puppy being pissed. She thought the relationship that Evan had with his dog was endearing; he honestly treasured that puppy as if it were his son or something. "Give him a few treats and I'm sure he'll forgive you," she joked and leant her chin on her hands, her elbows cushioned from the glass table by the soft pads of the sweater. Their eyes connected for a short moment when he mentioned his thoughts and she nodded silently, afraid to ask what she really wanted to.
"Jeez, have you not been fed in your wild New York adventures?" Vanessa pondered through a giggle as he groaned. It still felt all too familiar yet there was an awkward tension created by the slight unease amongst the comfort. There weren't boundaries set; they weren't anything yet and she wasnt' sure what she could or couldn't do anymore. The more she thought about it, the worse it got.
Eyeing the plate in front of her, the girl knew if she didn't take any then it would just cause Evan to kick off a fuss but she knew the contents of that pancake. It would be completely detrimental to her diet plan. So, with a forced smile, Vanessa picked up the smallest piece of pancake she could with the fork he'd handed her and ate it quickly. "There," she said, making a point.

The brunette let a small grin overtake her features as she felt a hand on her waist and her eyes glimpsed to the flowers on the side. They were more than Vanessa had expected but it didn't mean she was ungrateful. "Ev, they're beautiful," she said, putting the two pancakes she'd cooked on to the small pile. As his lips moved against her neck, Vanessa realised she'd almost forgotten how natural it all actually felt. Nothing like what she would've expected if they'd been together. But they weren't; at least, not yet.
Ignoring the way he'd looked at her in the sweater, Vanessa decided to focus on his trip. "It can't have been that bad. You had Hamilton for company," she pointed out with a teasing grin as she put the final pancakes on the plate and turned off the hob before heading to the table with the plate. She was a little nervous about being as forward as Evan was being with the intimacy; not only did the girl not know where they stood but she didn't want any more comments on her weight.
"Come get them whilst they're still hot!"

Chloe: keeping secrets from me is not for my own good.
Chloe: he's not a bad person, vanessa.
Vanessa: since you don't know them I don't think you get to decide.
Vanessa: this is the person who walks out on not on the girl he supposedly loves and his entire -weird but cute- family and then comes back to say he'll fix things and looks like he's done fuck all but mess shit up?

As Vanessa woke up that morning, she felt strangely happy for once and she thought that perhaps today would be the day she didn't have to worry so much about everything. Catching her reflection in the mirror told her otherwise and she winced, pulling a large jumper over her head to hide her small frame. She hated people staring and larger clothes seemed to be the way to avoid it for now. Knowing it was only Evan, Vanessa didn't go overboard with her hair or makeup either, keeping it to a natural but healthy state. She wanted to look nice but god forbid she looked like she was trying hard.
Beginning to create the batter for the pancakes, the brunette's mind had already drifted somewhere else, keeping her mind off of the disgusting food she was preparing. She instead thought of the kiss that her and Evan had shared in the hospital. She wanted it to be a sign of good hope but there was a nagging feeling that it was just some poor attempt of rebounding and that thought hurt her more than anything. Evan made her feel safe and protected and in a way, his piney-yet-familiar aftershave had begun to smell like home.
Jumping at the sudden sound of said boy's voice, Vanessa threw a delicate hand to her heart. Shaking her head, she turned back to the batter and began pouring some more into the pan, a few already made pancakes on the side already. "What have I told you about calling me that?" she said sternly, though the bubble of laughter in her speech said otherwise. At least, he'd turned up. It somehow sated the feeling of uncertainty within her for a moment or two. "How was the trip back?" the girl inquired, eyeing the pancakes carefully so they didn't burn.
What Now | Evan & Vanessa
Evan hadn’t realized how much he missed his big comfy bed until he was waking up in it. Couch surfing was fun but only for so long. If he hadn’t already had plans to see Vanessa he would have stayed in bed the entire day. He had been up late while his dad tore into him about taking off without a word. Even though he knew it was coming it wasn’t fun to listen to. They had gotten used to him not coming home some nights because he hopped a train out of state on a whim but he always at least let them know.
Vanessa was perfect motivation to get out of bed though. He hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her since he left her bedside in the hospital. The kisses reeled in his mind and he replayed them his entire drive back to North Carolina. Where had those feelings come from? Had he always felt that way deep down? He didn’t have the answers but what he knew was that something had changed in him and he wanted to be near her, with her.
Evan made sure to tell his parents where he was going before heading out. He stopped for flowers before arriving at Vanessa’s house. He knew it was empty besides the girl he was dying to see so he let himself in. Following the scent of pancakes he arrived in her kitchen. He stood by the island and watched her from behind for a while before speaking up, “Oh Nessiiie,” he smirked at the nickname she hated.

Chloe: you need to start talking to me, vanessa. it really isn't fair that you're keeping all these secrets from me.
Chloe: I'm not going to talk to Ben until you start talking to me.
Vanessa: secrets that are for my own and your good.
Vanessa: talking to ben is for your own welfare, I really don't give a shit because I don't like him and think you deserve better.
