inspo: double scoop of rainbow sherbet 🍨 I initially intended on making this dress out of scuba but the dye wasn't poppin' off the way I wanted and I just wasn't impressed. The final product is made from 2×2 cotton rib, good stretch but sturdy. This was made to fit my client specifically, 40"×37"x39", 42" in length. Once on her body, the panels stretch perfectly to show off the curved details #WHITNEYMANNEY

#MyHistory: Fabrice Simon
Fabrice Simon is a Haitian born fashion designer and painter born January 29, 1951, in Port-au-Prince. Fabrice became so iconic, he was on a one-name basis during the height of his career during the 1980s. When asked about his upbringing in Haiti, Fabrice makes it clear that during his childhood, he was hardly “bought up like a peasant”. In fact, Fabrice came from a long line of diplomats, writers, and a couturier grandmother. His childhood had a heavy French influence but the family still felt that the children of the family would be able to lead a better life in America
In 1965 at the age of 14, Fabrice and his family made the big move to Queens, New York . I was unable to find much about Fabrice’s upbringing in Queens but he did go on to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology, studying textile design and fashion illustration. Post-FIT, Fabrice worked for fabric manufacturers Cohama and Concord Fabrics designing classic patterns like florals for bedding, wallpaper, and women’s clothing. Fabrice spent five years doing this type of work, creating textiles in the aesthetic of other companies but soon found the work creatively unfulfilling and made a run for it to Europe.
Europe served as a hub of inspiration for Fabrice, as it would for any artist. Fabrice went to Europe with the intention to focus on painting but came back to America designing clothing. “I started going to museums and observed what people were wearing, I began to think (about) how to do dresses” By 1975, Fabrice debuted his first collection, a five dress collection made with hand-painted fabrics and the collection was an instant hit at Henri Bendel. Demand was at an all-time high but Fabrice was unable to keep up with supply. Like most of us starting out, Fabrice was designing, painting, and constructing everything on his own. Fabrice explains an 1983 interview with People Magazine that banks weren’t too interested in supporting a fashion designer with a business loan. “They thought I was just another hippie doing hand-painted T-shirts” Inspired by his grandmother’s couture background, Fabrice transitioned from painted fabrics into beading and took a bulk of his production to his home country Hati.
“The bulk of my beading is hand done in Hati where I own company- my father oversees the operation there.” Now instead of only creating patterns by painting, Fabrice created compositions with beading. All of Fabrice’s beaded fabric were hand-beaded in Hati by a team of 20 except for his high end made to order items that were made in his Manhattan studios. I think it is really amazing that Fabrice took the manufacturing aspect of his business to Hati to boost the local economy and keep his family involved. His mother and father took lead in Hati and his sister, Brigitte, help with production in Manhattan. As you can imagine beadwork is no cakewalk, taking ten days for the creation of one dress. The fabric was cut in New York then flown to Hati to be beaded then sent back to New York to be sewn into garments in Fabrice’s NYC studio where a team of five worked.
Critics took immediate notice, leading to Fabrice winning the Coty Fashion Critics Award in 1981. He built an early relationship with debutante of the decade Cornelia Guest, Guest wore a gown by Fabrice to her debutante debut party in 1982 and a loyal friendship grew from there. Fabrice was popular with celebrities dressing the likes of Shirley McLaine, Natalie Cole, Iman, Jerry Hall, Liz Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Joan Collins, Mary Tyler Moore, Dionne Warrick, Jennifer Holliday, and Whitney Houston. One of the main reasons Fabrice thrived during the 80s, everyone wanted to look rich and rich meant incredibly extravagant.
"I'm not really interested in what others are doing in fashion. I have to satisfy myself first"  -- Fabrice, People Magazine 1983
He eventually went into the world of menswear, creating out of a need for himself when attending events and wanting more stylish options fo himself. “Men have been conservative for so long, its time for (a) change and that’s what I’m doing” Fabrics included wool flannels, silk taffeta, and silk jacquards. Fabrice would play with scale, combinations of classic patterns, and unique elements like standing collars for men. His most popular male clients were Luther Vandross and Peter Allen. For his womenswear, Fabrice liked to work with silk crepe, georgette, charmeuse, and other decadent fabrics. During the height of his career, Fabrice was grossing over $1 million in yearly sales. With the market crash of the late 80s, Fabrice had to change his business model to work on custom clothing directly with clients which seemed more enjoyable for him since he didn’t see himself as much of a business person.
In 1994, Fabrice closed his fashion studio to refocus on painting and make himself a priority after being diagnosed with AIDS. It is interesting that during two pivotal moments during his life, Fabrice went back to his first love and even held exhibitions of his work. Even though he took a step back from fashion, his painting still looked ready for fabric.  On July 29, 1998, Fabrice Simon died at the age of 47 in NYC. AIDS claimed the lives of so many Black artists during the 80s and 90s, I can’t imagine how different the art world would be if many of them were able to take advantage of their career heights and receive the flowers they deserved while living. I admire his ability to translate his artwork into intricate beadwork and not compromise on what he wanted in quality. There were a lot of beaded gowns happening during the 80s, but Fabrice’s work stands out for his intentional mark making and abstract quality. For his designs, the body was truly his canvas.
Peace, WM
