“Of course I noticed. You matter to me.” / Lil
"You matter to me." She repeated in a playful, mocking tone. Her finger went into her mouth, and Lillian quickly stuck the wet digit in his ear. A smile spread across her lips despite her feeling uncomfortable from the direct way he expressed how he cared for her.
Then, under her breath, she hurriedly mumbled, "you matter to me too, dickhead. Never speak of it."

Rose exchanged a few more pleasantries with the owner before joining Nix by one of the cake displays. “Don’t feel limited to cakes. We could get cupcakes. An assortment of different flavors.” She suggested with a smile, eyes raking over the various cakes. Each looked absolutely delectable, so there really were no bad choices.
She didn’t fill the silence with words as he chose. Anyone who taken a tumble like the one he’d experienced would have to have a headache. Although she suspect most people wouldn’t survive it without some kind of life altering injury.
His laugh brought a smile to her face, and she cheerily entered the bakery. “Good thing I like danger, then. Come on, let’s get some sweets.” Violet eyes swept over the small shop for the matriarch of the family, who typically manned the front of the store. Not long after the bell on the door announced their arrival, a tiny woman with a bob of black hair stepped out from the back of house. There were strands of hair turning grey, which was the only thing that gave away her old age.
“Edna! So nice to see you again. My friend here is in dire need of a cake. It’s life or death, actually.” Rose said in greeting.
“Well, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I let the poor boy die. You—what’s your name?—let me know if you have any questions.” The woman said.

Just like the time years and years ago–when she was too close to dying for her comfort–the threat to her life disappeared nearly too fast for her mind to keep up. Most of her struggle with taking in everything happening around her was the harsh grip pure trepidation had around her hear, which affected her ability to think.
The weapon at her neck was suddenly absent and the man behind her released her in his shock. Then, the other two were taken care of. All three of them were incapacitated around her. Rose's mouth opened and closed twice; she was at a loss for words. What the hell had just happened? She knew she couldn't have been the one who did it.
"Um...hi? Am I going insane?" She asked, eyes scanning the area for any signs of movement.
Physically fighting someone had never been her forte. Usually she’d resort to magic but was unable to decide on some kind of plan. Any move she thought to make was overshadowed that if she even created an illusion she’d die. Even if it was just her frightening them leading to him accidentally killing her.
So…she just kept talking. Even as her mind considered every course of action she continued conversation. A few times Rose would ask confusing questions or make odd remark, which momentarily derailed their mostly successful attempts at scaring her.
“You know, people can only hold onto about seven things in their short term memory? Crazy, right?” She said to them.

It took longer than usual, but eventually she made her way home. All she did was dry off and curl up in bed, mind still whirling around the incident. After that Rose stopped going to the waterfalls for a few years. When she went back, the only changes due to the passage of time were the plants.
That didn't stop her from venturing outside the wards during her free time. Although, the near death experience probably should have taught her not to go places she shouldn't. Rose wandered out past the treeline where she found a large area of open space. The grass began turning a dull shade of yellow weeks ago, but it still felt pleasant under her feet as she walked further. The autumn breeze felt nice against her skin.
That feeling of calm was later replaced by dread when she crossed paths with a menacing trio while on the way home. She couldn't just transport home considering she'd take the one with the blade pressed threateningly against her throat. Doing that might have revealed where she lived.

“Okie dokie.” She repeated with a small smile. The sound of the opening credits relaxed her, the music familiar. He wasn’t far, so she carefully shifted closer. “Is it still okie dokie if I cuddle with you even with the potential of getting your clothes dirty?”
"You rock times two." She hummed while he inserted the DVD. Rose felt some more of the fear ebbing now that she was lying down with one of her favorite movies about to play. His presence aided significantly with the feeling of safety she had in his room. "No, no snacks. Sorry about the blood. I definitely should've stripped, and probably showered, before getting in your bed."
All she'd been thinking about was how good it would feel to be in bed. She just hoped focusing on the movie would keep her awake.

She moved to the side to make room for him to slip by her to get into his room. Once she was at the bedside, Rose helped clear off the bed. “A remote? I’ll try not to get a big head about you taking the time to mess with that. Otherwise, I might have to teleport home because my head won’t fit through your front door.” She was joking but made it clear that she appreciated the effort. It certainly made it easier to not have to get up and use the buttons on the TV to control it.
Rose slowly crawled into the bed, holding her breath unintentionally. When she finally was relaxed, lying flat on the bed with a pillow under her head, she exhaled slowly. “You rock. Crap, I forgot to put the DVD in. I was going to put on Guys and Dolls. I think after tonight a comedy is necessary.”

"Definitely not the only one. I've been worried all this makeup would melt off and leave me looking like a clown." She chuckled and hoped it didn't sound too forced. Myra had thought she was prepared to put up with whatever bullshit drama Flickerman decided to spin, but a love story hadn't been something she thought would be directed at her of all people.
Sure, she'd had a few boyfriends—and some girlfriends—but it wasn't like she yearned to fall in love. However, the Capital wanted a show. Like the sickeningly sweet host said, the show must go on. There were a handful of people she thought might play along with what she was about to do, but putting any of her friends at home in danger—that's what came with the attention of the Capital—wasn't something she could do. But...there was one person who was already as screwed as she was.
"Actually, um..." The hesitation and a tanned, calloused hand reaching up to brush some of her dark hair back was meant to make her appear sheepish. "Yes, but it's definitely not going to work. Long distance doesn't really work. I'd say the land of the living and the land of the death are pretty long distance." She sighed while giving the crowd a once over to see how her story was playing out. After a few seconds of silence, she continued with her lie.
"He's from district four. If either of us win, we leave the other behind. If we both lose, well, maybe there is an afterlife for us to..." Myra trailed off as she fought the urge to visibly recoil from how awkward she felt in that moment.
As she sat down, she struggled not to laugh at the exaggerated behavior from the host. Fortunately, just a smile slipped free; it was one she hoped the audience found charming instead of rude. Sure, making a huge fuss about how fucked up the games were might be satisfying in the moment, but she valued her life a bit more than to blow it on fifteen seconds of rebellion.
"I feel great, actually. The attention is a bit weird, I'll admit." She followed her statement up with a well performed, sheepish laugh. "How are you? It's gotta be hot under all these lights. I know I'm already sweating and I just sat down."
Myra was used to pretending, but it was usually for a much smaller audience. The one thing she did her best to push to the back of her mind was how many people were watching her, well, maybe it was two things. Her imminent—and most likely painful—death was the main factor she was trying to ignore.

After a while she was able to sit up, her hands braced against the ground to keep herself from swaying or collapsing back down. Drowning wasn't fun; she made note of that. Dark violet eyes scanned the area and saw no one. Had her savior already gone or had it all been in her head? Releasing a steady exhale, she said to herself, "well, I guess that experience was useful. Deadly but useful."
Still, she probably wouldn't be making that same jump anytime soon. One time was enough to add the sensation of drowning to her memory bank, and that's all she needed to replicate it if she needed to defend herself. The sun did little to keep her warm while the breeze cooled her soaked clothes. She knew she should go home to change, but she remained on the bank, staring at the water. Her body wasn't ready to move or teleport yet.

She huddled on the ground, clothes soaked and plastered to her form. Rolled on her side, Rose fell into a fit of coughing. Her body was doing its best to expel the water she'd inhaled while struggling to find the surface. She wasn't aware of her surroundings; all of her focus was on the pain in her chest and her pulse deafening her.
It took a few minutes for her coughing to subside and her breathing to even out. Still, her voice was rough when she tried to speak again. "Whoever you are, I owe you one." Because there was no way she just pulled herself out of that water. Unless her oxygen deprived, frightened mind was playing tricks on her. Which was very likely now that she had considered it.

She hadn't moved when he joined her on the couch. After he spoke, Rose shifted on the couch and flopped back to lie across his legs. "Good because it is nice and all I have are ingredients to make peanut butter sandwiches." Her tone sounded like she was pouting; however, as she looked up at him, she had a relax half-smile and weary expression. "Hope things have been well."

"I have a lot of bio to catch up on, so I have to push through this. I can't get lower than an A on this or I lose my TA position." He explained without taking his eyes from what he was scribbling away in his notebook. "Don't worry though. I won't collapse after one all nighter. It would take about a week for that to happen." His speak revealed how not present he was in the conversation as his full focus went to the assignment he was rushing to finish.
