33 years ago today, I made this sign to celebrate NATIONAL PAC-MAN DAY (4/3/82).  As you can see, I was really trying to get my parents to buy the Atari game "Maze Craze".

THE CHEECH AND CHONG PLAY-A-LONG

When I was twelve, we got HBO at our house, even though we didn't have cable. It came in on channel 5. It was usually snowy, but it seemed to come in better for some reason if you laid the rabbit ears on the phone jack. My father wouldn't let me watch R-rated movies. One Saturday night, the whole family was sitting on the couch, and Neighbors came on. As the R rating came on the TV, my father motioned for me to turn it off. Since I knew it was rated R for adult situations, i explained to him that it was okay. After about half the movie, they became bored and left. I taped the the rest and watched it the next morning after church. At the time, HBO's newspaper advertising included stills from movies on drawings of tickets. I cut these tickets out and would punch a hole in one with a paper punch when I watched that movie. When the Final Conflict (Omen part III) came on, my dad said "Turn it off." I asked him to just wait until the title came on, so I could punch the ticket. One night, HBO accidentally had put a PG rating at the beginning of Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams, an R movie, so my dad let me watch it even though he thought Cheech and Chong were a bad influence. I got to watch about half the movie before the screen became snowy and my dad made me turn it off. But what I saw inspired me to build a model of the ice cream truck in the movie out of Legos. I had two Lego people portray Cheech and Chong. I used a Lego trailer hitch piece as a headband for Tommy Chong. I put a sticker with ice cream bars on the side of the truck. I fantasized that it was an actual model marketed by the Lego company, called the Cheech and Chong Play-a-long. I don't remember what I did with it, but I kept it for awhile because I didn't like the thought of taking it apart.
