It's becoming apparent that Hiryuu was in the dark and perhaps in over his head when he made the decision to come to Earth. At least when it came to the fervent love the dragon gods had for him. First they gave him a medallion that he thought was a protective charm because awww, then they gave him a cryptic poem to stew on because oooooh, then they gifted him a fancy sword that was used to unbind him because awwww, and of course he didn't deeply think about any of it.

Until he got to know Zeno a whole two years after he started serving him. As soon as he realized Zeno would go on to outlive everyone he thought giving him his "protective charm" could be his anchor. At the time, he still believed that's all it was. A charm.

When he really, really started thinking about the prophetic words of the gods he realized what everything meant, and I can imagine all the different thoughts leading to this sad face:

His ignorance, his presumed inability to stop any of this, gestures he did out of kindness becoming crueler and crueler with everything he learns, and perhaps an internalized guilt that this was all his fault.
