Controversial opinion but I think the tendency to be overwhelmingly negative towards entertainment media has made a significant contribution to practically all entertainment media sucking now.

The fact that there's a demographic who's going to trash everything relentlessly ("it was a 7/10 absolutely worst shit I've ever seen insultingly bad") along with a demographic who's going to consoom everything uncritically is in fact the perfect storm to create an environment in which studios feel like they just don't have to bother to try.

If half of the audience is going to love it no matter what and half of the audience is going to hate it no matter what, then you have no incentive to be good. If that 50% of the audience is going to shit on you no matter what you do, then you're not going to bother trying to win them over, in fact you may as well shit on them back because what does it cost you?

Obviously in the reality of things there's a lot more nuance to consider and a lot more that could be taken into account, but from tiny studio staff brain perspective, the people loudly hating on absolutely everything they do are going to be as much of a contributing factor to their choices as the people loudly adoring absolutely everything they do, and the choice is not going to be "Listen to the guys that have proven they'll spit on you no matter what".
