jugheadpens:
Jughead frowned, straightening her shoulders. “Well the last thing that’s going to help her is the feeling that her friends are abandoning her because she’s not feeling great. Betty’s a big girl, Mrs. Cooper. I think she can pick her friends out on her own. If she tells me to get out of her life for good, then I will, but until then, I’m going to be there for her.” Jughead knew that Mrs. Cooper thought she was doing the right thing, but all 16 years in Riverdale had taught him was parents doing the right thing in this town never turned out all that great after all. “Well then, your family is doing an upstanding job of that all on your own. You don’t need my help to do it.”
Tumblr media
“Now, now. Don’t flatter yourself and insinuate that you’re Betty’s only friend, little Forsythe. You pulling back doesn’t mean that she’s going to be alone in the world. I love Elizabeth, but I don’t know if she’s strong enough to stand up for herself like that. She’ll see the good in people even when they’re doing nothing but hurt her.” Whatever polite air was keeping her posture in place dissolved when Jughead went to the jugular in regards to her family. “I’ll give you a moment to stop and think if you really want to discuss the state of families in this town. I’m all too happy to give you my thoughts on your criminal father and the junkie you call a mother.”

“Shot? But I was at Pop’s.” Fred couldn’t reconcile the last thing he remembered with the violent possibility Alice was presenting him with. People didn’t get shot at Pop’s. He brushed off her insult, the thing about Alice was if it was a real insult it would have hit hard. Experience had taught him that much over the years. Lucky to be alive did strike him. How bad had it been? Fred took a moment to inspect himself. The bandage on his stomach was clean, but tender to the touch. Out of habit he ran his hands over his face and froze. He could feel how his beard had grown scraggly. Lucky to be alive…
“Alice, how lucky am I?” Over time, Fred had come to realize that Alice knew everything about everything. It went further than being the lead reporter for the local paper. Alice knew all that was fit to print and damn near everything that wasn’t. That was probably the only reason why it didn’t bother him more that she, not himself, had realized what was going on with Archie and Ms Grundy. “I was at Pop’s. Archie was there…” Fred frowned in concentration as he tried to remember through the haze of his trauma and medicine. He was meeting Archie, had ordered for them as he waited in the booth. “He went into the bathroom. And then I woke up here.” Fred scratched his beard again, almost nervous to ask her for the details. “How long was I asleep?”
“Yes, Fred. You got shot. At Pop’s.” Clearly none of this was ringing a bell. Perhaps if he had brain damage it would lead to him developing better judgement. Heaven knew that he needed some, and his son as well. If Archibald insisted on being a constant presence in Elizabeth’s life then he’d need to learn to think with his brain and not any other body part.
“I’d say fairly lucky. You were comatose for long enough that Mary had to come back. That should answer the question to how long you’ve been asleep as well. She’s been looking over that dog of yours, ensuring Vegas doesn’t relive itself in our garden and that Archibald goes to school.” There was a pause as Alice leaned in, blue eyes always containing a shard of ice that she was unable to shake. “What did you get yourself into, Fredrick?”

“Um,” Ginger looked around her. This woman was clearly addressing her but the teenage girl had no idea why an adult woman would be up in her business like this. This was Betty Cooper’s mom that was for sure. If she didn’t know before the whole Polly drama was enough to make her noticed around Riverdale’s youth. “I’m on spare this period, Mrs. Cooper. I thought I’d walk to Starbucks and study there.”
Tumblr media
“I wasn’t aware that Riverdale High had became an open campus now.” Alice had never wanted to step foot back in the school unless it was for volunteer purposes, but with her new attachment to the Blue & Gold she found herself haunting the halls more than she preferred. “With everything that’s been happening around town, I’m sure the administration would appreciate it if students stayed where they were supposed to.”

“Kevin,” his name was accompanied by a brisk nod. He was one of the few friends of Elizabeth that Alice wasn’t perpetually trying to remove from her home. “Has anyone told you that stalling gets you nowhere?”

jelbean:
Jellybean kept a poker face as best she could, but she was breaking inside. What did Alice Cooper even know about what her father had to do to live? She was the last person who could pass judgement on them, sitting up on her high horse on the “good” side of Riverdale. Jelly gritted her teeth. “Don’t lecture me about my brother. And if you wanna talk about how my whole family is such garbage, you can visit the jail and tell my dad to his face. But he already knows, okay? Everybody knows.” Jellybean had held out this long, but she began to choke, the threat of anger crying dangerously close. Because underneath it all, she was afraid that Alice Cooper was right about FP. Jellybean didn’t actually know what he did or didn’t have to do to survive, but she did know that he hadn’t been a good father. And at the end of the day… she wasn’t even sure why.
Tumblr media
Her lips twitched slightly, powdered face remaining still other than that. “I have visited your father in jail and it wasn’t to tell him that he was garbage. I’ve known FP Jones a lot longer than you have, young lady, and I’m guessing I know him a lot better. This selfish person your father is, that’s nothing new.” Lies, lies, lies. Alice had always been the more selfish of the two. Her past was screaming evidence of that fact. She kept secrets & used people. She was the one who couldn’t even look at her own daughter without fearing for their futures. Even if she hurt them, Alice would do what she thought she had to. “Don’t waste your tears on him. I wouldn’t.”

“Polly followed her heart, those babies aren’t a curse.” Despite the bomb that was dropped on their true lineage, Betty didn’t suddenly resent Polly or her babies. If anything, she felt the need to be there for Polly more now than ever before. “It doesn’t feel like common ground, mom. It feels like you want to put your foot down and make me cross the distance.”
Tumblr media
“Those babies are half Blossom. More than half. If Polly wanted children, she should have waited.” Whenever Alice thought of Hal’s lies she could hear a buzzing in her ears and red threatened to take over her vision. It was absolutely ridiculous that he hadn’t told her, especially when their daughter had started dating a Blossom. “It’s a start, Elizabeth. Take it for it is.”

xsouthsidejones:
How was it that, despite the menial three feet between them, FP felt more distance from Alice than he ever had before. Even when they were both kids, and FP had been chasing after the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen — even with the constant rejections, he still hadn’t felt this barrier between them. The wall Alice was constantly stacking had only begun it’s journey to the sky after they’d shared a night together; & no matter how much time had passed, no matter how many kids either of them had or how life seemed to screw up either of their lives, FP would never get that night out of his mind.
It had been both his rise & fall and he’d never truly recovered.
Sometimes he wondered if he still loved her. And if he were being honest with himself ( which he never was ) the answer was easily yes. But he was done making rash, harmful decisions, and trying to squeeze his way into the rigidity of Alice Cooper wasn’t going to end well on his part. He had enough disappointment from other’s to last a few lifetimes, he wasn’t about to pile on another goddamn thing.
So he retrained his thoughts; kept thinking about Fred, thinking about how, if he were out of here, he’d go seem him, despite their differences. Andrews and him had their problems, but so did FP and a lot of other people. Didn’t mean he abandoned them in their time of need. He was a Serpent, not a cold hearted bastard. Though in Alice’s eyes, those might be interchangeable.
“Keep an eye on him for me, will ya?” and that was all he had to say on the subject. In his eyes, Alice didn’t have much of a right to discuss Fred with him. Too much time, too much shit, just didn’t feel right.
Looking back at his fingers, he chewed on the inside of his cheek. “You get that from that fake dinner you held just so you could send your little scooby gang to search my house?” he paused.
“Why are you here, Alice?”
Tumblr media
Over the years, a scorecard of sorts had been forming in Alice’s mind. She kept a running total of her failures and of her lies. Her discretions and her faults far outweighed her hopes and successes, but she mentally logged them all the same. Running a tight ship meant keeping a rigid mind. You had to cut out any and all distractions, like the boy you had lost a piece of yourself to and the man that he had become.
Hurting Forsythe was almost cathartic at this point, a punishment that Alice doled out on him instead of herself. She claimed that Hal was her first, her only. She lied and as penance struck out against the one who knew the truth but had never exposed her. It was true what they said. A serpent never really could shed their skin, and though Alice had buried hers under Chanel perfume and Ralph Lauren sweaters she could still feel the scales bristling under her skin. it was a curse and she would always carry its symptoms.
Of course she would keep an eye on Fred though. Alice liked to watch everyone in the town. Staying up to date gave you the upper hand and having some power was never a bad thing. If anything, she clung to it. Maybe the Cooper’s weren’t the Blossom’s ( even if they technically were in some fucked up fashion ) but they could still be in charge. The lack of unity between Alice and Hal had become nothing but a minor nuisance this far along.
“The dinner was real, Forsythe. It was the intentions that were fake. Or, rather, masked. We needed to look into your trailer and the kids were willing. You don’t make things easy.” He never had. Alice doubted that she never would. There wasn’t any other way that she’d take it. Someone who bowed over like Hal occasionally did made her sick. If you wanted something, you’d fight for it.
“I’m here because Archibald is friends with Elizabeth and I know that they’d want you to know.” Alice lied. “Someone had to keep you informed on what’s happening in the world.”

andrewsconstco:
Fred couldn’t remember the last time opening his eyes had been this difficult. They felt heavy and sore as he cracked them open to a flood of white light. He groaned and attempted to turn away from the light, but his whole body felt heavy and weighed down into the bed. Once his eyes adjusted, Fred finally seemed to grasp where he was. This was a hospital room, but that made no sense. He was supposed to meet Archie for breakfast at Pop’s. Oh God, Archie.
Without thinking, Fred tried to get out of bed. It probably looked ridiculous, a tangle of limbs being moved by sheer panic, but it hurt like hell as he strained his wound in his gut. With a pained shout, Fred slumped back into the bed. Still in the grips of confusion and panic he turned his head to the door and caught sight of someone beside him. “What…” His tongue was thick in his mouth and his throat dry as he tried to talk. “What happened?”

Though it was hard for some to believe, Alice Cooper did care about those around her on occasion. Riverdale was a small town. While the children got caught up in their own drama, they were unaware of the fact that their parents had already been around the block. Growing up alongside FP, Hermione and Fred, Alice had changed a great deal. While she was no longer the child she had once been, she also couldn’t deny the years of friendship she had once shared with her neighbors. Disdain for previous actions and affairs aside, Alice did regret that Fred was shot. That didn’t mean, however, that she wanted to be the one in the room when he woke up.
Blinking in surprise at the sudden motion, Alice looked up from her phone. She had been unapologetically checking her daughters location on Find My Friends, and she suspected her time with the app would be drawing to a close soon when one of them disconnected. Clicking it off and tucking it away into her clutch, Alice leaned forward slightly as Fred managed to speak.
“You, Fred Andrews, are an idiot and you got shot because of it.” Even though the words were harsh, there was no venom in her tone. If anything, she was Alice Cooper: slightly superior smart ass that she had been in high school. “You’re lucky to be alive.”

jugheadpens:
Jughead had tried but he really couldn’t keep the indignation off his face. “I don’t think I care, I know I do! I’m not just going to ditch one of my best friends because we tried something and it didn’t work out,” he said, meeting her eyes defiantly. He wrinkled his nose at her next words and shook his head so hard he felt his neck crack and winced at the feeling before steamrolling on, the words practically falling out of his mouth. “We weren’t going to be another - that would be - no! Not every couple is Polly and Jason and not every couple doesn’t know how to be safe - and we never even - no!”
Tumblr media
Blinking once, Alice’s voice was fairly neutral as she replied, “Then since you seem to care so much, you’ll let her be. This isn’t just about trying something that didn’t work out, it’s about keeping Elizabeth safe. You know as well as I do that at times she isn’t well.” That was all Alice would allow herself to say about the matter to an outside party. She had no problem telling Elizabeth to fill her Adderall, but mentioning it to Jughead Jones? Out of the question. “I wasn’t referring to my daughters condition, Jughead. I was referring to the fact that they became the picture of tragedy in the town.”

Jellybean paused. She tried not to show how she felt, but the woman was right. It was one of the few things that was tougher to think about, or talk about. She hadn’t even brought up the subject with her brother yet - how much their father had done, and that the few particularly bad things they knew about was probably just scratching the surface. “He wouldn’t have done it if he didn’t have to. And if he’d said anything about the murder, Clifford Blossom threatened our family.” Jelly crossed her arms. Her father wasn’t always a good man, but she’d be damned if she ever even thought about throwing her family away over something as trivial as that. “I’m sure if it was your family at stake, you would have done the same. I know you would do a lot to protect your daughters.”
Tumblr media
There it was. He wouldn’t have done it if he didn’t have to. Wasn’t that always the case with Forsythe? He had to lead the Serpents. He had to ruin his life. Even his children were now making excuses for him. “Clifford Blossom was a man with an overfilled ego, sick sense of judgement and horrible hairpiece. He can rot in hell. I don’t need you to lecture me about my daughters though. I did what I had to in order to ensure I’d never be in a place like that to hurt them. Your father should have done the same.”

Betty quieted down, a silence resonating between them for a few brief heartbeats. With a sigh, Betty smoothed down the top half of her hair. “Your actions suggest otherwise, but I’m tired of arguing about this with you. I’m tired of arguing with you in general. But you’re impossible sometimes. I just want to help, I want to be there for Archie and Jughead and Veronica and I want to feel safe in this town. You’re not helping with that, mom. I love you, but I need to have some control in my life, too.”
Tumblr media
Short of locking her daughter up and throwing away the key, Alice didn’t know what to do. She had tried to reason with her. In her own convoluted way she had opened up to Elizabeth more than anyone else and yet she still refused to listen. “I don’t care if I’m impossible, Elizabeth. I’m your mother. It’s my job to make sure that you’re not the next Polly Cooper. You know I don’t like arguing with you either. I’m just struggling to find some common ground here.”

“tainted??” he repeated, a small smile on his face. amusement apparent. he was still awaiting his trial, he was truly hoping that his lawyers could work out some things to make it seem like there was no fraud and embezzlement. he knew that would be difficult and he had already been caught out with it all. did alice cooper need to know that? no. “gangsters.. and yet you let your daughter associate with the son of one of those… gangsters.” it was clear that the two of them could go at this for hours, throwing jabs at one another. and even if he was a formal guy, he wasn’t going to back down against a fight. alice ran the newspaper, hiram was a business man — the two wouldn’t mix regardless considering they were both strong-willed. licking his bottom lip in thought, hiram just threw a smile her way, shaking his head. “fp was the reason. i don’t see another reason for me to be here.” he clapped his hands together, his eyes narrowing at her for a few seconds before taking a few steps backwards. “i’m sure i’ll be seeing more of you, alice. veronica seems to be fond of your little girl.” hiram was sure that KILLED alice. she spoke of wanting to protect her daughter from the jones’ so how did he feel about the fact betty was best friends with a lodge? “have a lovely day.”
Tumblr media
“Tainted. If you don’t understand the word, you can find a pretty clear definition in the article we ran about Lodge Industries.” The general disdain that Alice carried towards most was no longer masked. She wasn’t a teenager who had to worry about people liking her. If someone had a problem they could kiss her ass. It was that attitude that had gotten Alice away from the Southside and into a life that she could be proud of ( on paper ). Perhaps it made her enemies, but it also got her through. The win overcame the loss in the situation. “I let my daughter make her own decision. She chose to, very briefly, fraternize with the son of a gangster. Not a gangster. That’s ended. Besides, you don’t have much room to talk. Where have you been? A jail cell. Certainly not overseeing who Veronica is around.” If FP was the reason for men like Hiram Lodge darkening her doorstep, Alice was going to have even more of a problem with him. Jughead Jones was one thing. Hermione Lodge was another. Hiram was a beast of his own, a man who could pay to have what he wanted accomplished. He was the type of person that Alice was bred to detest. “I’m sure you will, Hiram. Veronica can keep pretending like she’s a saint for as long as she wants. Elizabeth will still be fine when your daughter does what people like you are built for and self-destructs. Now, have a nice day, Mr. Lodge. Welcome back.”

xsouthsidejones:
There was no denying what decisions had landed FP in this very seat; understanding that whatever desperation he had had yielded specific consequences, even if those consequences had never truly occurred to him. Accomplice in murder, obstruction of justice; all convictions he had prepared himself for. Murder of a teenage boy? Especially a Blossom? That confession had eaten away at him for more than just the fact it was a lie. He hated the way everyone now looked at him. & no matter how many times he’d convinced himself that the opinions of others didn’t concern him, he still felt the effects of the disappointing looks in some, and disgust in others. Those looks hadn’t changed, even with his murder conviction overturned.
It came from being a Serpent, from being what everyone believed him to be. Despite opinions bred out of ignorance, FP had worn that leather jacket with a sense of duty; an almost pride. It was learned, if nothing else, because he had taken the mantle of Serpent leader and there was no going back.
He may as well have started to look at the life in a different view.
Yet he couldn’t help but feel the heat of his seat burn a little hotter this time around — because he had admitted to shooting Jason Blossom, and the woman in front of him had surely believed him too. Even despite the reveal of Clifford being the real perpetrator, no one had even questioned it, and FP couldn’t help but feel like he was entirely the reason for that. No doubt was granted to him because he never gave anyone any reason to believe he was above murdering a teenager. Hell, even with the truth being out, some people still probably believed FP had done something beyond assisting Clifford Blossom.
Life could short you like that when you made the wrong choices.
Swallowing his breath, FP wondered if Hiram would have sent out a hit on Fred. The hidden relationship between Hermione and Andrews would almost stand to be enough of a reason, but FP doubted it. Something told him that Hiram would have taken a different approach. Almost seemed like shooting Fred would be too…impersonal.
“He gonna be okay?” he rose his gaze from where his fingers drummed lightly on the table, looking at Alice, looking at how the ease and vitality had bled from her features. Seemed like Alice was almost in a permanent state of pissed off, nowadays.
Glancing for a moment at the inmate clothing he was donning, FP sort of brushed that off too; his emotions reigned in behind a mask he was not dropping for the world. “You’d think if anyone was gonna make incarceration look good, it’d be me.” Because with the sentence he was looking at, he may as well start looking at his life with a little humor.
Tumblr media
1998: the last time that Alice Miller ( the Cooper had come later ) had allowed herself to have an honest conversation with Forsythe Pendleton Jones II. Even honest was subjective here, however. She had spoken the words that she wanted to be true. The words that she had wished were true. Over time she had learned to lie so proficiently that she could almost believe it herself, but back then standing in the hall of Riverdale High with the shrieks and music of senior prom pulsing in the air she had been very aware of her lies. Under the tulle of her prom dress there was a barely concealed bulge, the first glance of life that was ready to make itself known. She had looked into his eyes that night and lied. She hadn’t told the truth since.
It was easier to slip back into that mindset than to start being honest now. She had nearly forgotten now. The time for confessions had come and gone. Their lives had moved on. It would only be cruel at this point to tell him that somewhere out there was another son, living his life while F.P.’s ticked away behind bars. Instead of the fabric of her dress, Alice let her hands rest on the table. The child that she had once been had been extinguished a long time ago.
“Honestly? They don’t know. He hasn’t woken up. Archibald is living at the hospital and Mary is back in town.”
Despite the fact that she and Mary Andrews had been considered best friends at one point, Alice couldn’t help but spit her name. They were no longer friends. She had cut ties with her high school self and moved on quickly into adulthood. Her daughters and her career had come fast, a blur that didn’t leave much room for reflection. Despite the gap that had grown between them though, Alice knew F.P. was innocent. For a moment she had doubted him, let Veronica and Archie search his place where she entertained him at the kitchen table in the seat beside her husband. Alice had almost hoped that he was guilty, forever putting him out of reach and out of mind. Now it was clear that he wasn’t and she had no apologies to give. She had lost the will to say them years before.
“Well,” the corner of her lips tugged up in a brief smile. “You always did consider yourself more impressive than reality would permit.”
