One of the soldiers, Captain Yates, apologized to me for being too scared to talk to me. He's... okay. I guess. He made me what he calls "army cocoa" using a Bunsen burner. It's... well, it could be worse. Needs marshmallows.

This military stuff is confusing. So many ranks and titles... And everyone still insists on calling me "Miss Vera" even though I keep telling them they can just call me Vera. Everything's so formal here, and I understand why, but I don't like formalities. Reminds me too much of home.

Sneakers. Why did you have to keep me up last night. I can't build things unless I'm well-rested. And I need to build things. Sneakers. Please.

"Factories should be easy, so should the drones! Oh this is gonna be awesome- I think I have a few old prototype models taking up space in the workshop, lemme see what I can do with those- OOH! Brownies!! This day keeps getting better!! Thanks, dad!"
Without waiting for a reply, she rushed off, down the corridor, into the workshop, and immediately started searching for the prototypes. She hadn't been this excited about any of the Master's schemes before. She couldn't wait to get started.
"Sneakers that's my ankle let gO-"
Vera limped into the kitchen. Sneakers was clinging to her ankle, making it very difficult for her to walk normally. She approached the food replicator and the cat finally let go of her ankle, instead beginning to paw at the machine. The young Time Lord gave her feline adversary an unamused glare.
"...Little menace won't let me do anything without making it difficult for me... What did you want to talk about, dad?"
( @veratheforgetful )
He snickered slightly from where he stood at the counter, half finished bowl of some sort of batter on the side, along with a few ingredients scattered about.
"He loves you, that's why."
He paused his mixing for a moment, then turned to her.
"As you know, the Console is... very damaged, I believe the High Council shot... something at us as we were leaving in attempts to prevent us from leaving, but I'd already sent us into flight as it hit, I can't see any other way she would have got so damaged so quickly..."
He sighed, turning back to his bowl, plucking up a tub of cooking cocoa powder.
"The coolant was leaking and I managed to patch it up, however I'm going to need a lot of materials we don't have onboard the TARDIS to build what's needed for the repairs... I've made a list so it's just a matter of putting an order in, but... what I need and the amount of it... that's going to be a very large custom order and it will take a while... I do believe we'll be here for a month at minimum."
He poured some of the cocoa powder into the mix and then stirred it in.
"I have been... offered a job from the Brigadier... it's... he wants me to continue creating plans as I had been... but swapping out anything lethal for non-lethal options... like... glitter bombs instead of real ones, I... accepted, it's... well, I- I need something to do and... it's the only thing I'm really good at, my dear... I was struggling to think of what I wanted to do with... well... anything, I suppose... I had been so... focused on destroying and causing harm and I didn't... I didn't know what I wanted to do and... well..."
He sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly.
"It'll... focus everything on something less... destructive... the Brigadier said it would work out as a training exercise for U.N.I.T... he also plans on keeping it a surprise from the Doctor so it'd be like... a prank, I suppose... I... would you like to help? I have a few ideas for non-lethal bombs, but I wanted to make them look as realistic as possible... no use in doing something half-arsed, hm?"
He grinned.
"Glitter, paint, smoke, flash... I was thinking... something like with the Autons? Could be... fun... I'll have to talk about them swapping out their actual guns for something less deadly, a few ideas there, don't want anyone getting trigger happy..."
He rolled his shoulders and glanced at her.
"I was also going to ask him about a legal Earthern identity as well as adopting you, but... they have surnames here, it's odd to not have one, so, I've researched and picked out a few that'd be fine, but I wanted you to have the last say in it."
He slid a piece of paper over on the countertop towards her.
"I looked through the top 250 most common surnames for the area we're in, have a good look think and get back to me about it before I go talk with him later."
The paper had a small list of surnames scrawled out in his handwriting:
Evans
Jones
Taylor
Moss
Marsh
Bell
May
Bird
Reed
Hunt

"...has a weird way of showing it, he keeps biting me-"
Vera listened intently, processing her father's words. A... whole month... They'd be stuck on Earth for at least another month... She'd be lying if she said she wasn't disappointed, but she could stick it out a little longer. Finding the necessary supplies to repair the TARDIS would be difficult considering they were stuck on a planet in a time period with limited scientific advancement... But it wouldn't be impossible to work around this restriction.
The mention of the Brigadier... offering not just her father, but her a job working for UNIT, doing what they usually did, just without the intention to kill or conquer... Her eyes lit up, gears turning in her mind, ideas already circulating.
"Of course I wanna help!! This is gonna be awesome!! And no one gets hurt because of this- this is to help people- we get to help people!!"
She practically bounced in place, hardly able to contain her excitement.
Then she saw the paper with the list of surnames. She looked over it for a couple seconds before pointing to "Marsh".
"That one. Short for marshmallow. Also some of the soldiers call us Martians."
She didn't even give the other names on the page a passing glance. She knew what she liked.
"Sneakers that's my ankle let gO-"

Vera, my dear, once you're done with whatever it is you're doing, could you meet me in the TARDIS kitchen? I have a couple of... things... to discuss with you.
... Nothing bad, but... well, we're going to be here for a while and...
...
... Just come to the kitchen when you're ready, don't worry about being fast or anything, I'll be baking.
Oh, um, sure! I'll be right there!

It is, yellow.
...Yeah? But that doesn't explain anything. It looks ridiculous, he could easily build something more efficient, he can even use his TARDIS now! But he keeps working on that car! I don't get it!

The Doctor let me take a look around his lab this morning. There's some pretty cool stuff in there, but he won't let me use any of his equipment. Fair enough, I guess.
