Four Times Mat Almost Told You How He Feels And The One Time He Did

my first attempt at a 4+1 fic! i really loved this idea (which shoutout to my lovely islanders twitter friend who suggested it to me) and really liked how the final product came out!

I. 

The Lee’s living room is crowded to say the least. But what else were you expecting when the whole team and their families were invited out for a barbecue before the season starts. Everyone migrated inside when night fell over the warm summer air and the campfire couldn’t fight the mosquitos away anymore. 

Now, the kids are playing on the floor while everyone filters in and out of the room, telling stories of the past and revealing hopes for the future. 

And in the middle of it all is you.

You’re standing next to Tito and Jordan, talking about their plans for the season when a familiar topic of conversation comes up. One that makes you smile and makes your heart soar and fills your stomach with butterflies. 

“Did we ever tell you about the time Mat got locked out of the locker room?” Tito snickers, bright blue eyes darting around the room looking for the brunette you both call your best friend. You shake your head before taking a sip of the drink in your hand, cheeks already warming with blush. 

Since meeting Mat during his rookie year after a random bump in at your favorite cafe on the island, the two of you have become inseparable best friends. The friendship was unexpected to say the least, but you couldn’t be more grateful for the Islanders center who has become the sunshine in your life. Over the last three years, you have done almost everything with Mat by your side. Whether it’s regular movie nights, spending every minute together exploring the city or island whenever possible or attending games to see him play, the last couple of years have been an absolute joy.

All because of Mathew. 

And despite telling yourself in the beginning you couldn’t fall for him, not at all, he has been claiming your heart with each passing day. Not that he or anyone else knows the emotions that you feel any time he’s around you.
