Coming of Age Day has been a long celebrated national holiday held every year. The actual date may vary every year but it’s celebrated on the second Monday of January, making it today for 2016!
This holiday is held to congratulate and encourage all those who have reached 20 years old over the past year to help them realize that they have become adults.
Women would wear a furisode, a style of kimono with long sleeves that hang down, and zori sandals. Men would sometimes wear a dark kimono with hakama but nowadays, most would wear formal suit and tie instead.
