Me: I shouldn't disturb Neil Gaiman. I shouldn't send an ask unless I really have no way of getting the information otherwise. I'll check old interviews and all the articles that vaguely mention the subject. Of course it goes without saying that I'll read though the FAQ in its entirety. Only then, will I send an ask. However, I'd be very polite and praise his work, as anyone would. I'd also keep it short, because I don't want to waste his time. But I'd keep it very very respectful. I'd be sending a message to a very talented, amazing author that deals with god knows how many like me. Or I'd just stay in the dark and not send him an ask. Yeah, I'll do that.
inspired by a post that talked about how westies love to demonize eastern european architecture/"commie blocks" i did a teeny little experiment to prove something to y'all
so first i searched "commie blocks" "eastern european blocks" etc. on google images and these were the results:
pretty ugly and scary right?
then i searched for "panelák" "chrushchovka" "blokovi" and other eastern european names for them. here are the results:
do you see any differences between the two? yeah me neither! (sarcasm)
notice how in the first set of pictures they are all shot so there's barely no ground visible and some of them in a way so they feel imposing and/or make you claustrophobic - which dissociates you from the image. they are all shot at night/in fog/snow/cloudy weather. most of them are also shot from afar or from above, making them seem more lifeless. and every. single. one. of them has at least three filters laid over it so you can make no mistake in what emotion they are trying to conjure up in you.
on the other hand the other set of pictures are all shot from the ground or from a balcony, at least a third/fourth of each picture is made up of the ground which is covered in grass. there are people going around living their lives as normal, there are playgrounds for kids. it's sunny in a lot of them (yes, believe it or not, eastern europe is actually sunny quite often). and most importantly: they look normal! they are not made up to be decrepit old buildings that are going to collapse every second now (places like that definitely exist but they are not as common as you would think).
you could make literally any place look just as ugly and scary as the first set of pictures. don't believe me? here are some pictures of common places in the us and uk made to look like that using the same techniques. some of them i found alteady looking pretty depressing some i tampered with to get the desired effect:
so yeah, stop calling the place i grew up in a hell on earth. it's not great but so isn't yours.
I don’t even care if it’s macaroni, ramen or those little bowls you stick in the microwave. Please, I need reassurance that most of the population on tumblr WOULDN’T STARVE TO DEATH if their parents couldn’t fix them food or they couldn’t go out to eat.
House, Wilson, and Amber share a california king bed. every night House and Amber jump onto it and wrestle (NOT sexual this is pure violence and power struggle) until Wilson walks in in his nightgown and floppy nightcap christmas carol style, at which point House and Amber immediately move to their respective sides of the bed so that Wilson can get in between them. while they're getting tucked in Wilson says something insane he thought of while he was brushing his teeth, specifically designed to spur House into another round of 4d chess with him at work tomorrow. then House and Amber kiss Wilson on both his rosy schoolboy cheeks at the same time. they all go to sleep after that but periodically through the night House and Amber will wake up and lean across Wilson to whisper evil things into the other's ear, because they're both trying to induce night terrors in the other person. it has never worked but they're still trying. Wilson hears it every time but he thinks it's funny. like it or not this is what domestic bliss looks like <3
