lol i hate today’s era of absolutely zero nuance takes. a friend didn’t behave exactly as you’d wanted them to? cut them off. a guy didn’t text you back instantly bc he has his own life? he’s just giving you breadcrumbs. doing something makes you uncomfortable? don’t do it anymore. someone isn’t instantly available for you? disinterest. just absolutist statements that often don’t apply to the multilayer situations of everyday life. like. stop. literally just stop it

every gay friend group has: the repressed academic, the ska loving "brawn", the formerly mean girl psychic, the match making anime fan, the astrology lover, the lesbian butcher/reluctant big sister, the sexy cat with nine lives, the walrus who runs a magic shop and the local witch who wants to kill everyone

adults are always talking about how “kids will do anything to get out of school” and okay, first of all that’s not true, but I think we really need to ask why that idea holds so much sway.
children’s brains are hard-wired to take in new information and acquire new skills. consider, for a moment, just how thoroughly our society had to fuck up the concept of education for it to be a normal thing to assume kids are universally desperate to avoid learning.

Oh my god and the way the bureaucrat hunting them down’s powers are to make people relive their trauma? And she works in the lost children department? Her whole thing is triggering scared dead children. The physical manifestation of the way a cold and objective bureaucracy dehumanizes and re-traumatizes victims. The cruelty and callousness of a system more concerned with process and procedure than children’s well-being.
Lot of thoughts about how interesting the ‘big bads’ of Dead Boy Detectives were.
One is a demon where possession is a metaphor for an abusive relationship (as well as him being her actual abusive ex). By possessing her he took over her life and isolated her from her loved ones and at the end she’s left grappling with her guilt (did I ask for it?) and her self-worth (maybe I deserved it?) which is just so interesting thematically. The way she combats this by finding meaningful friendships with other kids her own age (relatively speaking, given that two of them are ghosts) and through building a connection with her ancestors and finding her roots.
And the other is like… the concept of a bureaucratic machine that dehumanizes children because of a commitment to the technicalities of the rules. It’s about the lack of empathy for the unique circumstances of these kids and the blind faith in the system. The way the existence of one minor error in her file leads Night Nurse to reconsider her whole worldview. It clearly shakes her to her core that there’s even a possibility the system may be flawed.
And then there’s Esther who is literally just a classic evil witch archetype.
Anyway much to think about. (I haven’t finished the series yet so if I’m off about some of this 🤷‍♀️).

Also some added thoughts about Dead Boy Detectives and the way both boys’ deaths were because of bullying, because of pranks gone too far. It’s a ‘dumb prank’ but Edwin spends 70 years in hell because of it. The boys were ‘just messing around’ but Charles died from his injuries. Its a really compelling narrative about how much bullying can follow you throughout your life. It can be over a hundred years since edwin was last in school but he still can’t escape the consequences of what those boys did. it’s been thirtyish years since Charles died but he may as well still be running through those woods the way he has to always be on the move, always hiding from Death.

Adults: Following rules is good, not following rules is bad
Little me: Okay :] *follows a rule*
Adults: Oh my god look at this loser. He doesn't know that this rule is Secretly Okay To Not Follow. Dumbass. Let's all laugh at him

okay so I have this idea for a new therapy thing. basically the idea is after an abusive relationship or a combat deployment or anything that might conceivably leave you with PTSD and a loss of ability to reasonably gauge how bad the shit that happened to you actually was, you sit there with a mental health professional for like, a solid 30 to 60 minutes, you tell them short vignettes of your experiences and they respond ONLY by rating how fucked up each one was on a scale from 1 to 10 and then you move on. the objective isn't to reflect deeply on specific experiences but to get a sustained series of reassurances that what you went through was, in fact, That Bad and gradually rebuild your trust in your own present and future ability to judge when what you're going through isn't okay.
currently calling it Rapid Fire Affirmation and Recalibration Therapy (RAP-FART). working title, open to feedback.
