❛     well, i thought today we could do somethin’ different. like go to the park or see if there’s an arcade somewhere ..     ❜     it might not have been the best idea he could come up with, a better father might have thought of something more exciting, or not have raised their child in such a life as this. but the sentiment was there, the recognition that he should be doing better for his kids, even when trying to avenge their mother.

     her chin retreats further into her palm     as those words cause her to straighten curiously,   fingers settling over the soft smile they prompt,   obscuring it partway  —  though the fact it never quite reaches her eyes ought to betray her anyway.    for a moment she wonders at the possibility the doll could have been listening before it was switched on,   or even taken out of its box;   it sounds so similar to the things she mutters to herself time and again,   if only to maintain her  sanity  in a place like jakku  —  but then she hears unkar’s voice as loud and clear as if he were there,   scoffing at her naivety,   and it suddenly seems far likelier that she is childish and that these pretty phrases are just a dime a dozen.    of course her new little friend isn’t going to tell her she’s nothing,   a  nobody   —  she can’t imagine the reviews would be as glowing if that were the case  —  though she wonders   .  .  .          ❛  i  —  don’t actually know.  ❜          rey answers,   hand slipping away from her face,   watching the doll for the same sort of pitying reaction she gets from others.          ❛  i was left in front of a hospital when i was young,   with no idea where to find who left me.    i’ve never gone too far from the area,   just in case they  —  well,   it might be easier for them to find me if i’m still here.    and then we can finally all leave together.   ❜          she pauses,   nose wrinkling.          ❛  does that sound stupid?  ❜

her receptors chime sadly at the girls story, colourful eyes rotating a few times in their predetermined circuit as they processed the appropriate response to the girls lingering question. every ashley too doll was programmed to respond as ashley o, the real ashley, would. the technology so complex and impressive that it could react to anything that was spoken to it. there were a few wired in responses for sure, including the general bubbly and upbeat nature of the dolls words, always optimistic and supportive, but the technology was sophisticated nonetheless.    ❛     it’s never stupid to have hope, rey.     ❜     said ashley, a hint of sadness in her voice chip.    ❛     it’s what keeps us going, even in the sad times. i’m sure your family will come back to you one day. and if you need a friend until then, well then you have me.     ❜

Now that the banshee is dead, though, she’s starting to wonder if maybe this isn’t all her life has to be. “I am pretty good at what I do,” she agrees with a small smile, “but I’m not sure if I know how to do anything else. Desk jobs don’t have enough vampires.” 

❛     yeah, i hear that ..     ❜     the hunter hums in understanding, he couldn’t much see himself as some corporate douchebag, sat in an office all day, worrying about board meetings and flow charts. he might be embarrassed to admit it, but he’d thought about the normal life once or twice before, a few times actually, the whole apple pie life with wives and kids and picket fences in the suburbs. he felt his thoughts wander in that direction, thoughts about maybe buying a bar somewhere, or building one even, running his own place and running it his way. or maybe he’d just move from job to job, place to place, see the world even. all that he knew of it was what he had seen of monsters and truth be told, he’d much rather look at some sunrise somewhere beautiful. inevitably, he came to the same conclusion that he always came to, that life just wasn’t how his story ended.    ❛     i still think you can do anything, eileen. really.     ❜
