since mashima is terrible at fleshing out natsu as a character I will say so far on my rewatch(up to tartaros), he shines the most when he's the secondary MC to Lucy. Since Lucy is the traditional shounen underdog protag and has a wayyy more fleshed out character arc, whenever she takes center stage and Natsu is there primarily to support her it's j 10/10s all around. He's at his most likeable when he's doing everything to support her imo, and I think Lucy centric arcs actually paint him as way more emotionally mature than usual. Like whenever it falls to him to comfort Lucy, he tends to be kinda quiet and serious and sincere, and it gives him a depth that's not seen otherwise. (just off the top of my head, the whole phantom lord arc, iconic rainbow sakura, iconic forehead touch, when he comforts her at the end of the first movie, etc)

#fairy tail #I haven’t finished FT yet and might make a post with my complete thoughts but this is 100% my main problem with FT so far #Lucy really feels like the most well developed of our main cast and the arcs/moments that focus on her are some of the most heartfelt #I like natsu and he’s interesting but he kind of ends up just saying that friendship is important a lot #..and I think his fear of losing the people he cares about could be a lot more explored #but he just feels.. more alive when he’s with Lucy? like his emotions are more nuanced and real when mashima lets the story be about her
