This weeks Demos: Tonight I’ll be at Central 28 Beer Company in DeBary. I’m setting up at 5:30. Run should kick off around 6. There’s usually a food truck and of course, the Central 28 has som great beers to choose from. Wednesday March 8th I’ll be doing a demo with Fleet Feet, Pensacola. The run will be from the World Of Beer I’ll be setting up around 5:15-5:30 Thursday March 9th is with Fleet Feet, Mobile. Throwback Thursday: Torin IQ (It’s a long one) Personally I feel this shoe came out ahead of its time. Wearable tech is going to be a huge part of athletes lives and putting a brain in a shoe is a great idea. The Torin IQ had all the comfort of a foot shaped shoe with the added bonus of real time feedback thanks to the built-in sensors. These sensors monitored your foot strike, impact info, cadence, pace, distance, time and contact time (on the ground and in the air). All this was delivered via the IQ app that was free! If I remember correctly, the sensors in the shoes were in an ‘S’ shape snaking from heel to toe to give more accurate results. As you can see from some of the photos, the shoe was highly reflective, offering extra safety at night. Running with the Torin IQ was like running with a coach in your pocket. You got real-time feedback! I remember testing this shoe before it’s release. I had just returned from the Western states training camp, 3-4 days of running different sections of the WS course followed by flying to Utah to run the Squaw Vally (or was it called Squaw Peak?) 50. Not being used to hills let alone mountains, it’s safe to say my quads (along with every muscle I had) were screaming with pain for the next week or so. After running a LOT of hills/mountains in a short period of time, I returned home to FL and ran my 1st run in the IQ. A few minutes into the run and the IQ app told me to “Loosen up, your running very rigid”. I got comments like this throughout that run and for my next few runs. The app nailed it! The app would show you an image of the underneath of a pair of Torins and highlight where you were landing when your feet made contact with the ground. It also gave you tips on improving your gait. It seemed to be able to tell if you were leaning too far forward/backwards and would prompt you to correct your posture. The advice this app gave you was incredible. This shoe was great for newbies and pros. You didn’t need to wear it every day but by adding it into your rotation 1-3 times a week, would in most cases yield great results. I would not be surprised if we (Altra) revisit this tech in the future. So, did you ever run in the Torin IQ? The Duo This one’s the 1.5 my 1’s are very used so I decided to shoot the 1.5 instead. At the time, the Duo was our largest stack height on a neutral Road shoe. It’s lightweight reinforced upper made it dry quick if it got wet and the Max-LT midsole along with the Blown rubber outsole meant you could put some serious miles on this shoe. I personally loved the Duo for longer distances and I never had an issue with the side blowing out. But sadly, some of you did. The Duo 1.5 (pictured) was supposed to fix that problem…and it did but it wasn’t enough to keep the model alive. The 1.5 was the last we’d see of the Duo…or was it? I remember at least one of our Elite Runners adopted the Duo road shoe for trail running. They loved the light weight and flexibility that the Duo offered. Rumor has it that the Mont Blanc (our fast trail shoe) got its inspiration from the Duo. I can definitely see some similarities. Did you ever run in the Duo? How did you like it? This Throwback Thursday is paying respect to the Kayenta. The Kayenta came out a few years ago but sadly only lasted one version (I think). It was lightweight, durable and had a 2 layer upper, giving it a ’Sock-like’ feel. This made it a great Tri shoe. You could slip it on/off relatively fast and you didn’t need to wear socks with it if you didn’t want to. Along with the Tri crowd, a lot of Gym goers gravitated to this shoe. Like all Altra shoes, the balanced cushion (zero drop) means you aren’t being pushed forward when doing things like squats. It’s light minimalistic feel meant you hardly noticed it while wearing it and it dried fast if it got wet. I’m reluctant to use my pair. Once they are gone, they’re gone. So for now they sit on a shelf in my shoe room where I can see them. King MT: Don’t quote me but I seem to remember the original name was going to be FKT (Fastest Known Time) before landing on King MT (King of the Mountain). Originally the Velcro strap going across the mid foot was to stop your toes hitting the end of your shoes while running down hill. For example, during a race, you could crank the Velcro tighter while at the top of a mountain/hill. Run down to the bottom of the hill and loosen the Velcro. This is/was a huge timesaver. The fact that the King MT was light weight, fast draining and had the Velcro strap, made it a great OCR, shoe. The ability to tighten/loosen the straps just before you go thigh high in to the mud pit, almost guaranteed you’d make it out the other side with both shoes on your feet. Another great feature this shoe had was the Cat’s Tongue in the heel cup (7th image). If you were to put you finger on the top of the heel cup and run your fingers down the inside of the shoe, it would feel smooth. But run you fingers in the opposite direction, and it felt rough…like a cat’s tongue. This was to keep your sock and heel in place while in motion. I really liked this shoe for a number of reasons. It was light, fast, adjustable and worked well as a MTB shoe. But alas. the King MT was taken from us too soon. Gone but not forgotten. Despite it being in the high 40’s (cold for Florida) yesterday at Fort Clinch, we had a good amount of people come out to try the newly released Lone Peak 7 and the Outroad. Thank you to all that came out. Most of the runners ran in both demo sets I brought.
