Rest.

[tw: drinking. abandonment issues.]
It’s been a while since Konekomaru had the opportunity to speak with Aito alone, but admittedly this wouldn’t have been his first choice of circumstances.
“M’ zap… th’ shoe” Aito slurred, struggling to stay upright in her too-tall heels. Well, only one of them, Aito had somehow successfully kicked one off at the door, and seemed upset that they were leaving it behind as Konekomaru dragged her to bed.
“You’re lucky I picked up the phone, or else you’d still be out there all on your own.” Konekomaru huffed, finally letting go of the woman and letting her fall gracelessly into his bed. She kicked off the other heel and crawled to one side as Konekomaru lightly chastised her.
“Whate’er, I’m home, yeah? I always get home- thomehow.” She giggled, as it was something she was immensely proud of. “You s-aid you’d nev’r ‘ick me up- if i’was drunk.” She added, pointing accusingly at him.
“You know I never meant that.” Konekomaru sighed. He really wasn’t used to dealing with her like this, but he’d rather her be here than still looking for a place in the middle of the night. Aito seemed pleased with the response, at least till Konekomaru turned to leave.
“Wh’ere you goin’?” He asked, sitting up quickly as Konekomaru paused in the doorway.
“I’m gonna sleep on the cou-.” He started, before being rudely cut off.
“No!” Aito barked, almost comically too loud given the normal conversation they’d been having up to this point. He immediately reached out to Konekomaru and opened and closed his hand, as if trying to grab him. “Come lay ‘ith me!”
Konekomaru paused. They did it all the time in high school, it really wasn’t anything new. But it’s the first time since he came back that they’ve even been alone together in any real way… plus drunk Aito and sober Aito had very different trains of thought- one might be alright with him laying down with her, and one may not. “I wouldn’t want to make you uncomfortable.” Konekomaru said, justifying himself.
“But ‘m asking.” Aito responded, still reaching for him as though she had given a good answer.
It was nothing like back in highschool.
In highschool, the two of them could easily cuddle up and nap for hours. Now, both laying flat on their backs and staring at the ceiling, it felt as though there was an invisible wall that kept the two of them separated.
Konekomaru turned his head to face Aito, and for a split second, he thought he saw her looking at him- well, as close as she could get when the horns on the sides of her head kept her facing the ceiling. “So… blonde?” Konekomaru asked, gesturing to her bleached hair.
“mhm. i’ was for a case… little ‘hile ago…” Aito explained, reaching up and touching her hair with a soft smile, turning his head as much as he could to look at Konekomaru. “D’you like it?”
“Well…” Konekomaru hummed, looking over Aito’s curls and considering his answer. “It’s definitely new.”
“ ‘as not wh’t i asked.” Aito huffed, seemingly upset by his answer.
“Uh…” Konekomaru considered it again. Blonde really wasn’t Aito’s color, but it was still an interesting thing to see. “I mean, I still like your natural color but… this is cool too.” he chuckled, gently brushing a strand of hair away from Aito’s face. Aito’s smile widened a bit as she looked away. back in highschool, he would have agreed with Konekomaru and spent the next minute or so rambling about how perfect her hair and face and general person was- but now, he laid still, silently appreciating the compliment. There was a natural lul in the conversation, but neither of them fell asleep, so Konekomaru asked another question. “Why were you out tonight? Something to celebrate?”
“Nah, work.” Aito responded, stretching out a bit and getting more comfortable. “New drug gon’ ‘round…” she said, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a little sheet of paper. Konekomaru accepted the slip and unfolded it. Apparently it was an injection that would give the person an impossible high, but with prolonged use, the user’s quirk would grow less and less controllable- till one day they lost it completely. It would be an extremely big issue for those who’s quirks supported them, so the source had to be found before it got too popular. “I ‘as lookin’ for trouble t’night but uh…” Aito laughed a bit, covering her mouth with her hand. “There ‘as a real pretty lady and… she ‘ot me-a drink ‘nd… an’ then another… an a’nother… and…” Aito gestured vaguely, waving to the side as if to insinuate a continuation of that.
“Really?” Konekomaru asked, a bit shocked. “I thought you’d be smarter than that- I mean getting drunk on the job… not the best look, Aito.”
“Awe shut up” Aito mumbled, seemingly oblivious to Konekomaru’s irritation. “I’m reeeal careful- an’ at least when I'm onna job I tell s’meone.” Aito snipped.
This- this was Konekomaru’s least favorite topic of conversation. “Aito- you know I couldn’t have told you-”
“D’nt you know wh’t shut up means?” she snapped, smacking Konekomaru’s side.
“Don’t hit me- and stop acting like I could have done something about it! That case was important to me-”
“An’ I’m not?”
“You are Aito!” Konekomaru barked, sitting up to look her in the eyes. “I needed to do it though! Telling you would have completely blown my cover! I couldn’t risk that.”
“I tell you about my cases all the time!” Aito countered
“Yeah, because your cases aren’t as personal as mine was.” Konekomaru huffed, throwing the blanket off himself and getting out of bed.
“Wait- ‘here are you-”
“I’m sleeping on the couch.”
Aito sat up with a start, balling up the covers in her hands. “Y’know, you’re gonna be a g-reat dad s’meday.” he said, anger in his eyes as he stared Konekomaru down. “‘Cause one min-ute you're my knight ‘n shining armor- but th’ sec’nd things get un-comfortable ‘r scary- then you- you run away!”
The two stared at each other in silence, Aito nearly shaking as she seemingly understood what she said only after she had said it.
“‘M sorry Koneko- I-I didn’ mean that-” Aito rambled, flighting the covers as if to follow Konekomaru off of the bed. “I didn’t- I swear- it’s j’st- please don’ leave- don’ go-” she would have fallen off the bed and onto her face if Konekomaru hadn’t caught her, gently lifting her back onto the bed as she wiped a few stray tears from her face, smearing her makeup as she did. “Don’ go… please don’ leave” she continued to repeat as she clutched at his shirt.
“Aito…” Konekomaru sighed, taking her hands and removing them from the twisted fabric over his chest. “Are you gonna regret this when you’re sober?” Aito paused, maybe the first time she’s actually thought about the answer to a question before she spat it out all evening.
“I… i don know…” she admitted, now holding tightly to his hand. Konekomaru recalled vaguely the first day they met, and how fascinated she was with his paws. “I j’st- aaall i know is th’t…i can’t sleep a-lone t’night.” she lowered her head to rest it onto their hands, begging him. “Pl-ease… j’st stay?”
Aito didn’t do well in silence. Silence gave her the opportunity to overthink, and overanalyze, and overwhelm himself with everything that could go wrong. It was rare for Aito to be uncertain with her actions, but he was an emotional drunk, he just couldn’t help himself.
“Move over.” Konekomaru said blankly, Aito immediately scrambled back over to her own side to give Konekomaru some room as he climbed back into the bed.
Once again they laid staring at the ceiling, the energy between them tense and almost painful.
“Aito,” Konekomaru asked, not moving his head to look at her this time. “Do you remember when we were in love?”
“We were j’st kids…” Aito responded, exhausted by the entire evening.
“That’s not what I asked.” Konekomaru responded, with almost the same amount of venom Aito gave him earlier.
Aito paused for a moment, taking a deep breath to steady herself. “Of course I do.” she sighed, closing her eyes. “We’re ol’er now. We’re different p-people. You can’d love me-”
“You haven't let me try.” Konekomaru said, looking at Aito as she flinched at his directness. She wasn’t used to him speaking so harshly, but she didn’t blame him. She’d put him through hell tonight.
Aito took a second for herself, before gently reaching down and taking Konekomaru’s hand in her own. “I donnow if ann’body loves me anymore.”
Konekomaru’s chest felt heavy as the words sunk in. He tried to argue, but when he finally got his words together- Aito was already sleeping quietly next to him. Her grip on his hand loosened slightly as she slept, but she didn’t let go.
She always seemed to struggle with letting things go.
…
It took a second to realize it, but when Konekomaru woke up the next morning, he was alone. The other side of the bed was made, sheets tucked neatly with pillow fluffed perfectly. Konekomaru looked around a bit, only to find a little note on his bedside table.
‘I don’t remember anything from last night. Whatever happened, I’m sorry.’
