Week 5-6: Self-Portrait Selection
I took most of the shots by referencing different techniques that I had researched and tested during my five weeks. Most of these shots were taken with a reflection, similar to how Vivian Maier captured her self-portraits. What I learned from emulating her style is that smaller mirrors tend to keep the subject in focus, while wider mirrors include the subject along with its surroundings. I tried different lighting such as a ring light, flashlights, tungsten light, and even a phone light to observe the differences in lighting created during my self-portraits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I chose these photos for my self-portrait selection because they align more closely with my concept of self-reflection and creating reminiscent feelings, like Nan Goldin and Magdalena Pardo. The varied lighting and compositions in these photos show different emotions, and experimenting with settings helped me get closer to what I had envisioned.

Week 5-6: Portraits of others Selection
When shooting this during the easter break, I was thinking of my concept of nostalgia feeling. Using my friend, Blake. the lamp we used gave a warm lighting that felt cozy. I also told Blake to feel relaxed and comfortable in his space, I guess it worked because he had been here for a while so showed more vulnerability. I tried different angles and techniques I researched from other artists and learnt during my time in the light studio.
I chose these photos as my selection as they had that feeling of reminiscence and self-reflection.

Week 5-6: Portrait Of Other's Selection
During these shot i didn't really think much of referencing my shots to my research i wanted to play around more with my camera and using the studio to create the mood i imagine, getting more comfortable in trying to do stuff differently. All though these photos aren't close to what i imagine they still give a type of feeling.

Week 5 SDL : Light Studio and Portraits
Tried this week photo shoot in the black room, so we got to experiment more with different lighting. The photos i took were Mikaela, trying to experiment with having two lights in opposite direction while having Mikaela face her body side ways while looking at me. I was focusing on trying her eyes

Karin Scuderi
First Image:
A close-up shot in the dark with red artificial light creates shadows on her face and highlights her skin to be bright red. The image appears to have a lot of noise so they might had a high iso to create a special mood to the shot.
Second Image:
Another close-up shot was taken but this time the image is B&W and appears to have been edited or taken with a film camera. Her facial features are quite sharp the focus could be manly on her eyes nose and mouth. It really makes the viewers look into her eyes.
Third Image:
I found this image really interesting as she had taken the photo in the dark with a flash while also riding on a bike. She was somehow able to create a photo while it blurs out the surroundings but able to get herself in the centre of the image without being too blurred. It creates a sense of movement within the shot.
Forth Image:
From my previous experience in the studio, we were able to create blurry effects where we created distortions. We did this with low shutter speed and having myself move a bit to create the trail. Her image is in B&W which really connects us to the subject, especially her eyes. having nothing else in the background of colour in the way to show a compelling and surreal image.

Magdalena Pardo
Magdalena takes her shots are if she's trying to capture a moment, her pieces are so bubbly and warm. It reminds you of past memories, a nostalgic feeling in her photos. It seems that she likes to take her pictures with natural lights at high ISO which lets more light in the shots that create that warm and burnt-out effect. It also brightens the background and lowers the quality which also adds to that vintage look. I want to trying to a take photos like this when i take photos outside using the natural light.

First Image:
I see the artificial or natural light being manipulated in a way that it looks like the light itself is moving and mimicking the movement of water. The shot could mean that the person feels some sort of pressure or overwhelming feeling. As they lay there with layers on top of them.
Second Image:
This shot feels like a lot of anger, stress and annoyance as the subject is wearing red which could represent the emotion of anger or some kind of distress. Her facial expression is shown with a natural light showcasing her not-so-happy expression.
Third Image:
What I can feel from the last two shots is that this is also shot to get the behaviour and feelings of the subject. The colour blue represents calmness or relaxation. The holding of water can represent tranquillity in ones self. The use of lighting only just high lighting the subject creates a sense of mood and kind of feels lonely.
Fourth Image:
The last image feels anxious and scary at the same time as the subject is behind a glass panel with artificial light placed in the shower is beaming, like it's piercing the viewer. A sense of caution is what feeling this image gives away.

Week 4 SDL
This week we focused on trying to get familiar with the light studio, we played around with moving the lights in different positions to highlight specific features of our faces. We tried taking portraits of each other in our own way. I tried to take the photos without the flash and it added that strong mood into my shoots but also made the image darker. I tried to capture the feelings of the moment by making my subject laugh, angry and serious to show different emotions to change the feeling the image could. we also had a bit of fun with playing the filter and camera settings by having a low shutter speed.

Week 3 SDL: 36 Photos
Reflection:
This week I focused using lighting types on Davis with a nice lighting that very well lit during the day time underneath a sheltered area. I also tried different angle's and composition with artificial lighting.
My self-portrait where focused on different lightings and composition using artificial light, from the flash , phone light and ceiling light(tungsten light). I tried Imitating Vivian Maier compositions of taking shot in a small mirror with light hitting the side of my face in one direction well the lights were off, thought not successful i did find lighting quite interesting.
Tumblr media
Next time i should start trying out different techniques from more photographer that i have researched to experiment with composition and lighting.

Pauline Dupin
Pauline Duplin who is adept in portraiture links the women in her photos with her environment. The first image shows natural lighting taken at a low shutter speed capturing that phasing of a man's silhouette phasing past behind her, perhaps to show a connection. The second image shows the subject against a white/grey background with the shadows overcasting her face with a tree emphasizing her environment maybe her whole life. Pauline takes her shot with a story behind it, her use of natural lighting and other elements that she uses for the processing of her photography.

Daniel Korzewa
A Polish photographer who was drawn to the cinematic fashion of imagery. He uses natural and artificial lights to show specific settings. The first two images seem to be shot in a studio with hard lighting and also the use of red-filtered lights. It also is cool to see the first image of hair being blown for the side with the light coming from, emphasizing some sort of invitation for the outside. The two images also feel glamorous and meant for a fashion magazine. The two bottom images are the use of outside natural/ artificial light and seem like a conceptual shot taken with a meaningful purpose with the environment. The shots seem as if they focused on the eyes to bring out their emotion. I feel like I recreated the two images on the top in the studio with the right lighting

Nan Goldin
Nan is an American photographer known for her deep and straightforward photos. Nan uses images as an autobiography of herself and her friends, for Nan, she feels that taking pictures does not detach herself but is more of a way of touching people. She feels that it is a medium between her and the touching one's soul. Nan looks at her images from a spiritual perspective. The shots she's taken appear sentimental and taken during a vulnerable time. The use of lighting and color emphasizes reality, as it doesn't seem surreal but more truthful. Her composition and framing of her image are quite thoughtful. Her image look very nostalgic as well. It something i would like to create in my shots.

Diane Arbus
Diane was an American photographer and writer who is well known for taking photos of people who don't fit into the norms of society and who are labelled as "freaks" during an era where it was less accepting than it is today. Her creative process was creating a connection with her subjects as well as re-photographing them in the later years. Her photography style is described as direct and simple, a frontal portrait centred in a square format. She often used a flashlight during the daytime to isolate the subject from the background, creating a surreal effect in her photos. Her use of lighting shows me how to capture their facial expression and create a mood using artificial light.
