Finnish snow words
ajolumi: very dry powder snow which whirls around (when travelling by sledge, etc.)
hanki: a thick layer of snow covering the ground or a crust of snow
hankiainen: a crust of snow (→ kantohanki, kestohanki, hankikanne, hankikanto)
hiutale, (jää)neulanen, (lumi)kide: snowflakes; the word »kide» originally meant specifically a snowflake
huove, höty: snow made porous by mild weather
huurre, härmä, kuura: different types of frost
hyöty, hitva, hile: very small snowflakes or these whirling in the air
kalto, kaltto, kallo, jääkallo: an icy part in the road. The modern word »pääkallokeli» (=skullweather) is a contortion of jääkallo, and means »dangerously slippery weather».
kinos: an oblong snowdrift often formed by wind
kohva: a frozen mixture of water and snow that has risen on top of ice
kuurankukka: and unusually large crystal of frost (most notably on windows and other glass surfaces)
loska, söltsy, iljanne: slush; very watery snow.
nietos: a snowdrift formed by windy snowfall
nuoska, suojalumi, suvilumi, rääpäkkä, mätälumi, takkala, huove: snow softened by mild weather
pakkaslumi: light snow falling during clearly subzero temperatures
polanne: a layer of snow condensed under weight and partially frozen
puuterilumi: powder snow
riite, riide, riitta, riitto, kerte, kohma, kahma, hyyde: sleet frozen soon after hitting the ground; a thin crust of ice atop snow
räntä: sleet; falling watery snow that becomes slush once it hits the ground
siide: fine falling snow or fine drizzle of sleet
sohjo: slush; snow mixed with lots of water.
tiera, tilsa, paakku: a clump of snow stuck on the bottom of a hoof or a shoe
tykkylumi: snow gathered onto tree branches through deposition
vesihyhmä: heavy and very wet slush or snowy water.
viti, nattura, utukka, höykkälumi: just fallen light snow
vuotos: new, just fallen snow
Snowfall:
sataa akanpalloja/rämpsyä/pakkasenhiveniä/siitettä/jalkarättejä: snow big snowflakes (»jalkarättejä» means »footrags», by the way.)
pyry: thick snowfall
tuisku: snowfall during strong wind or snow moving with strong wind
Tracks in the snow:
aito: an imprint created by a herd of reindeer
latu: track created by skiing
kieppi, uuttu: a grouse’s hole in snow
