“Should we get her out of this?” Wells asks.
Clarke looks around at the pod, at the cut on the girl’s forehead, at the way she’s slumped against the monitor. She’s pretty certain the pod has some kind of parachute mechanic, even though it didn’t open upon landing. The wound looks superficial, but there is no saying what other trauma the girl sustained when she crashed.
“Not yet. We could make it worse if we move her wrong,” she replies, before she moves closer to the other girl once more.
Her mother had told her a story once, of a worker who’d been crushed under a metal beam during renovations on Factory station, and whose coworkers had pulled him out from under the debris. They’d twisted his spine wrong in the process, paralysing him from the chest down. Her mother said he would have been fine, had a medic come to him first.
Clarke is careful not to repeat that mistake.
She checks the girl’s pulse again – still steady – before she puts a hand on her shoulder and shakes softly. Nothing. She shakes again. The girl’s eyelashes flutter as a groan escapes her lips and her limbs start moving.
“Hey, hey, take it slow,” Clarke tells her. “Can you feel your toes?”
The other girl lets out another groan, even as she opens her eyes. They settle on Clarke – blue against brown – before widening. “You’re alive!”

“If I have to fix another splinter, I’m going to lose my mind.”
Clarke realises she’s said it out loud when Wells comes next to her, worry filling the brown of his eyes. He only cocks his head to the side, not a word shared, for her to follow him outside the dropship. She closes her eyes against the afternoon sun, lilting her head up so the warmth can kiss her face and warm up her cheeks.
The camp has changed so much over the past couple of days, she barely recognises it every time she steps outside. Not only are tents popping up all over the place – hers included, to the left of the dropship’s entrance – but the foundations of an actual wall are starting to make themselves visible.
Monroe is running the entire operation like a pro – she showed people how to build axes and take down trees, how to clean the trunks of branches and turn them into logs, how to use them to erect walls around the camp. The oldest teenagers spend their days clearing the camp of trees – effectively making it bigger – while the youngest stuff the space between logs with mud and moss, to protect them more effectively from the wind.
Clarke is impressed, really. But she also wishes they all had gloves, so she didn’t have to deal with the cuts, bruises, and splinters. It’s been a nonstop revolving door of work injuries in the medbay since this morning.
“Let’s go for a walk.”
She sighs. “Wells, we can’t…”
“We can, and we will,” he cuts her off. “You take care of them, I take care of you.”
