Cargo Containers and Modular Housing
It's taken a long time, but cargo containers and modular housing seem to be joining forces.
Modular housing, prefabricated housing, or "kit homes" as they're sometimes called, have been around a lot longer than you'd think. Surprisingly, the first documented modular house was built in Australia in 1853. The trend gradually caught on and found it's way to England, then finally to the US to support the gold rush in 1908. Just so we're all using the same terms, modular and prefabricated housing is defined, for the sake of this article, as any structure that has some portion of it built in an offsite factory and is assembled on location.

Similar to modular housing, cargo containers have been transformed and bended to fit within new technologies and market demands. In the England during the late 1700's they began transporting coal in containers. The popularity of this method grew, and by the 1830's they were using a form of intermodal container to transport coal by cart, then train, to the final destination. However, they were not the containers as we know them today, and there was not a global standard for size. It's wasn't until 1955 that a former trucking company owner named Malcolm McLean pioneered the development of the intermodal cargo container that we know and use today.
Now, some nearly 60 years later we're finding that we have a lot of these cargo containers built and deployed, so much that we're looking for other things that we can do with them. After some head scratching, people realized that they could take the sturdy steel boxes and convert them into living quarters, very similar to the concept of modular housing. While many countries have been using cargo containers for everything from shops and storage units, the first large, planned and publicized development was in London in 2000, and aptly named "Container City 1". From there, popularity grew and housing developments as large as 1000 containers have been constructed, or perhaps we should say assembled.
On a smaller, more residential scale, many architects around the world are pushing forward with unique, environmentally friendly houses made from used cargo containers. Just as modular housing began as a fast, affordable housing solution, and grew into large scale, million dollar homes; modular container housing has matured from an affordable housing solution into an expensive, eco-housing concept. Some of the highest end container houses feature water collection systems, high strength security features, and all the amnesties of a conventional house.

Variations of Conex Boxes Add to the Endless Flexibility of Dry Cargo Containers
Most shipping containers come in very standard sizes and styles after all, that's the nature of the beast and the beauty of the conex box. It's what makes them so useful for so many things other than moving goods across the ocean as they were originally intended to do. The dimensions of containers remain uniform but, shipping containers do come in several different varieties to allow shipping of goods that wouldn't otherwise ship in a standard conex box.
Standard 20 and 40 high cube container conex boxes are referred to as dry cargo containers. Variations of the basic conex box include refrigerated units often called "reefers," open tops or containers with no roof for shipping very tall items, tank containers which are nothing more than a floor with four corner posts, and top rails. A tank is positioned in the middle of this frame and now liquids can be lifted, handled and shipped uniformly on a container boat. Flat rack containers are container floors with two end walls often used for shipping construction equipment. These containers all have very specific uses but they maintain the exterior dimensions of our good old basic dry cargo containers and are handled the same way.
In addition to those very specific use containers we'll look at some shipping conex boxes that share more of the aftermarket flexibility of dry cargo containers. The most common of all the specialty containers are the "High Cubes." These containers are 9 foot 6 inches high on the outside and 8 foot 10 inches on the inside as compared to standard dry cargo containers which are 8 foot 6 inches on the outside and 7 foot 9 inches on the inside. This extra ceiling height makes high cube containers especially desirable for container homes or businesses. The 8 foot 10 inch interior height allows an owner who is modifying the container into a habitable building to run electrical fixtures in a ten inch cavity and still maintain a standard 8 foot finish ceiling height. High cubes are readily available in 40 foot lengths, they can be found in 20 foot lengths with a little work.
Another style of container based on the dry cargo container is the "double door," or "tunnel" unit. These are containers that have a set of doors on both ends, when both sets of doors are open the container does resemble a tunnel. Very often 20' double door containers are cut in half and transformed into two 10 foot containers. Usually you will find tunnel containers used in storage applications because you can load and unload them quickly from both ends or locate an item from both ends. If you are looking for a double door container make sure you are very specific in what you are asking for. Dry cargo containers come with double doors, on one end, if you ask for a double door unit the seller may think you are asking for a standard. To be sure you are getting what you need make sure you specify that you need doors on both ends.

Need a 40 Ft Container for International Shipping? Learn More About International Container Shipping
Dating back to the mid-20th century, shipping containers, sometimes called intermodal containers, freight containers or sea cans, are boxes made of steel that are used to safely and securely ship household items and commercial goods overseas. Shipping containers can typically be safely transported across different modes of transport - for example, from truck to cargo ship or rail.
In order to prioritize safety for shipping containers overseas, the 1972 Convention for Safe Containers was established by the United Nations and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Shipping containers must conform to specific international safety regulations.
There are a number of types of shipping containers serving specific purposes, for example, temperature controlled or refrigerated containers are capable of safely transporting perishable goods that need to be stored at a stable temperature. Open top containers are often used to transport heavy equipment or bulk cargo. Tank containers are used to move liquids and dangerous or hazardous materials.
A 40 foot shipping container for overseas moving and international shipping is a standard size. These large containers are typically big enough to hold around 1,850 to 2,200 cubic feet. This space is generally suitable to move a large household (3 to 5 bedroom) or one vehicle and a few small household items.
There are different types of 40' (12.2 m) shipping containers. There is the 40 foot dry box standard container and the 40 high cube container. If you need a 40' dry box container that is the standard size, the maximum payload is generally around 59,000 lbs with a cubic capacity of close to 2,350 cubic feet. High Cube 40' dry box containers have slightly smaller maximum payloads of around 57,120 lbs with slightly larger cubic capacity of 2,680 cubic feet.
The capacity for shipping containers is often described in twenty-foot equivalent units or TEU. Dimensions and maximum payloads on 40 foot cargo containers do vary slightly and this is based on the construction style of the container and the manufacturer. It is helpful to keep in mind that the maximum payload refers to a container's capability but does not take into consideration environmental constraints that may include weight limits pertaining to lifting devices at shipping ports, or road or rail restrictions.
If you are shipping goods overseas in a 20' or 40' shipping container, chances are your items will go to their destination on a container ship. Container ships are a type of cargo ship specifically designed to transport intermodal containers. Worldwide container ports are specially equipped to handle containers with cranes and design features that ease and expedite the loading and unloading process. The Port of Shanghai and the Port of Singapore are two of the busiest container ports in the entire world. Major container ports in the United States are located in Los Angeles, Long Beach and New York / New Jersey. Many people interested in shipping a car overseas choose to ship their vehicle in a 40'. In comparison to RO RO shipping, where your vehicle is rolled on and off of a cargo ship, if you choose to ship a car overseas in a container you can also pack personal items inside your vehicle. This is especially helpful if you are moving overseas or want international shipping for a vehicle along with other cargo items.
Depending on the items that you are shipping, there are a variety of strategies to packing a shipping container to minimize damage and maximize space and safety. Cargo experts can provide you with expert packing guidance and assistance to assure that your goods are packed with the greatest care and efficiency.
If you need international shipping and are interested in a shipping quote for a 40 ft. container, a cargo shipping expert can help you by providing free estimates of the costs involved in shipping a 40 ft. container to and from your desired destinations as well as more information about international container shipping.

Upgrade Your Container With “Easy Open Door” System
We have recently launched this new innovation to save you from the trouble of operating container doors. Find out why installing it offers you quick and easy access to your shipping container! With easy open door handles, opening and closing container doors will require less effort than what you typically experienced with standard door handles.
Characteristics of easy open container doors
As you can see, there's only one locking bar on the right-hand side door. Nevertheless, we produce that particular bar a lot thicker than normal to ensure its strength. Furthermore, having only one bar enables you to open and close your container with only one hand!
Next, easy open door has a longer handle with rubber grip. The longer handle provides better leverage when rotating the locking bar to open/close the right hand side door. Meanwhile, the rubber grip gives you safer and more comfortable especially in cold and damp conditions.
Why should your container has easy open door?
If you frequently access your container like multiple times in a day, having an easy open door system is definitely a great idea. Considering opening/closing shipping container might be difficult for someone less strong and less experienced in operating shipping container doors. Additionally, this upgrade is available in some shipping container including high cube container.
Here a quick recap of advantages you get with easy open door:
ü  One hand door locking/unlocking door operation which saves your time and effort
ü  Has longer handles meaning less force required when opening/closing the door
ü  Has rubber grip handle, so you don’t have to worry on accessing your container in cold or wet climate
For those who wonder how easy open door will affect the security of your container, the answer is it won't. Because it is basically produced to the same safety standard.
