how did you find the right colors when you draw backgrounds?
The process differs each time and the steps are never in the same order but I can give you a quick overview on how I approach colors:
Try determining the mood of the piece or scene you're working on, and think of the literal meaning of colors to achieve that mood. Color theory is not essential but I recommend reading up on it!
Thumbnails, try different color combinations with different lighting scenarios and compositions, it's best to find your angle of approach before you start coloring.
Composition and lighting have such a huge effect on color, especially value! Make sure you habe a solid value structure before determining colors, it helps a ton.
Don't be afraid to use references, or study art that you love and reverse engineer that! I especially love to edit the references themselves before using them, find unique ways to manipulate the colors and improve both readability and appeal.
