âYa donât understand how dangerous this is.â
Jellie couldnât help it. She laughed. It was a cold laughter, without any of the sincerity sheâd once had. Kahraâs threat had had the opposite of the intended impact, it seemed.Â
Then her face fell back into a practiced neutral, as if the laughter had never happened at all.Â
âKahra,â she replied. âYou still donât get it, do you? Itâs not that I donât understand the consequences. Itâs just that they donât actually matter.â
She traced a hand idly along the handle of the sword at her side, but made no motion to draw it. In fact, she looked utterly unthreatened.
âSee, the problem is, you or your goons could kill me right now. But if you did that, I would just be back later, like nothing happened. It would be a waste of your time, and a waste of your energy. You know you canât stop us. Nothing you could do matters, least of all killing me.â

The jellyfish growled, choking on cold tears that were already running down her face. Foolish. Foolish and reckless, to let Kahra see her like this. But it was too late now; there was no putting the genie back into the bottle now.Â
âIdiot,â she snapped.Â
Almost unbidden, the flat of her palm reached up, with the full intention of smacking Kahra across the face. It wasnât a vicious blow, like those sheâd dealt when they were properly fighting. It was mostly just...frustration and pain.Â
âYou still think- think ANY of this is about what happened between you and Lumi?â she choked between sobs. âDonât be a goddamn fool, Kahra! I know you didnât try to kill them!âÂ
She tried, in vain, to wipe the tears from her face, to seem more pulled together.
âDo you think Iâm just fine with the fact that you abandoned us for a new family that visibly TERRIFIES you? Youâre not safe there! Let alone the fact that you let us think you were dead, or that I barely recognize you anymore, Iâm just scared for you!â

âyou canât keep me safe from everything.â (Lumi) HAHAHAHA
Reflexively, Jellieâs fists balled, her whole body language tightening in frustration.Â
âThe hell I canât,â she growled, a kind of barely restrained anger she rarely showed in front of her witch.
It wasnât that she was angry at Lumeira. No, she could never be ANGRY at them. They were too dear to her, too important to lash out at for no reason. No, her anger was more formless, directed vaguely at a world that DARED to presume that she couldnât keep her witch safe from anything that dared to harm them. The prospect was almost offensive to her.
âLumi, you donât have to worry, okay,â she muttered, trying to bring her heart rate down. âThereâs nothing I canât handle out here. Nothingâs ever gonna hurt you.â

âOkay, I trust you JellieâŚâ Otti takes his stance once more, still a bit hesitant.
Itâs painful obvious he doesnât really know anything about fighting. His posture shows doubt and there are plenty of openings, he raised his fists but it doesnât look like he knows what to do with them.
âL-Like this?â
Jellie examined Ottiâs posture carefully. As expected, his stance really needed some work. But nitpicking the details could come later. Right now, she needed to teach him an important lesson.Â
âOkay. Now hit me. Donât worry about hurting me, Iâm very tough. Just hit me as hard as you can, and watch out for my response. Okay?â

Indeed, the Ice Floe was fairly tame in regards to entertainment, but the little that came was just enough for the witch to handle. Her family, along with the occasional passing faces, satisfied their needs. Most days.
The one passing day called for some sort of fun, and with Otti off playing elsewhere, all that was left at the home was Jellicent, a perfect target of âspyingâ. What drew her to such? A familiar melody.
â [â I think you play it better than any time I ever sang it, how long have you practiced now?  â]
Youâll startle the poor familiar, sneaking up to her like thatâŚ
Jellieâs bow skipped along the string, making a quick screeching sound before falling into silence. She wasnât startled for long though; the moment she heard her witchâs voice, her posture relaxed and she was calm once more.Â
She lowered the violin to her side.
âIâve mostly lost count,â she whispered softly, turning to the doorway. âIt just never seems quite right. Like thereâs something missing from the way you sang it.â

âRight right! Awareness! Serious Otti on!â
ââŚWait what?â Ottiâs serious facade quickly drops as Jellie mentions the fight being between the two of them. âBut, I donât wanna fight you Jellie!â
âYou arenât going to hurt me,â Jellie promised, giving Otti a reassuring smile.Â
At least, she sincerely doubted he was capable of hurting her, considering his relative inexperience in combat. It was really more a demonstration than anything else.
âHey. I promise. Just stand as though youâre going to fight. Show me what your stance looks like.â

it wasnât him that she was after . while , yes , he was sure that wadanohara would have cleared his name after heâd left the blue sea , it was only now that he was able to relax a bit . the explanation was brief , and yet , the way that the jellyfish spoke gave him quite a bit to reflect on .
â abandoned you ? sounds terrible . â a pause , before he allowed himself to cast his gaze upon her , watching her expression . â did she ever say why ? i had to do something similar for ⌠a while , and didnât get back with my witch until recently . â
and then he left her again , for this journey to the dead sea . that was an explanation that would come later , though , if only because the jellyfish had proven herself to at least not intend to harm him .
Jellieâs face hardened at the shark familiarâs words, her body language visibly closing off. Her hands folded tightly across her chest, unbidden.Â
âHa,â she muttered.Â
Maybe sheâd misjudged this stranger. Maybe he was less like her, and more like Kahra. Or maybe she and Kahra werenât as different as sheâd hoped. Either way, this conversation was about to be very....interesting.
âWell. She swore an oath of loyalty to the mafia, of all things, so if she has a reasonable explanation for that, I would love to hear it. Or at least, one better than âI wanted to get stronger!ââ

He pouts a bit as she reaches to pet him gently in the head. Despite loving the gesture, it still got him flustered whenever someone would do it without warning. His tail on the other hand, quite enjoyed the attention.
His eyes light up almost instantly. âR-Really?! Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!!!â The young otter brought Jellie into a big hug, too overjoyed to even consider about the painful consequences.
He braves the pain of his friends stingers which he should be more careful off and pulls away, tail wagging wildly. âIâm ready Iâm ready! Teach me stuff teach me stuff!!â
Jellie quickly whipped her tendrils out of the way, letting them hover above her just in time to avoid injuring him. She patted him gently on the shoulder and allowed him to pull away.Â
âCareful, Otti. Awareness of your surroundings is the first step to combat readiness. You could have hurt yourself.â
She stepped back, standing an armâs length away.Â
âOkay. Stand like youâre going to fight me.â

âBut Iâm not the kind of strong that matters! I donât have stingers like you do or knives like KahraâŚI donât know if I could wield magic like LumiâŚâ
His voice was starting to sound desperate. The same scenario replayed in his head over and over again, where he just got in their way and in the end there was nothing he could do to protect his family. Once again, his family was torn apartâŚ
âI canât be the small child that needs protection forever! I want to fight too!â
Jellie looked dismayed for a moment, then hurt, then almost guilty. She bent down a bit, reaching out to ruffle the otterâs hair. The motion was tender, as always, but troubled.
âI can teach you a thing or two,â she said finally, âbut you have to promise me you wonât use them unless you absolutely have to. I donât think I could live with myself if you went looking for a fight and got yourself hurt.â
She couldnât help herself. Sheâd gotten quite good at covering her feelings over the years, but sheâd never been able to hide anything from Otti. She didnât want him to fight. That much was plain as day.

a traitor ? the label made him tense , briefly , before he forced himself to swallow it down . no , if she were hunting him , he could explain now . wadanohara was SAFE now . there was no need to be afraid of salâs curse any longer , not now that he was on the run .
at the jellyfishâs offer , he glanced about , spotting the driftwood . not the best of places to most , but after how long heâd been walking , his tired bones werenât exactly up to caring right now .
â right . â
he strode over to the driftwood , sitting down , a sigh escaping him . he was more tired than heâd thought , he realized . however , he couldnât let his guard down entirely just yet . not without an answer .
â you said youâre after a traitor . ex - familiar ? or something else ? â
âNo, youâre right. An ex-familiar.â
She sat on the driftwood gently, sitting with both knees together and giving Samekichi more than enough space of his own. She folded her hands neatly on her lap.Â
âShe was a close friend. We served the same witch once, but she abandoned us. Let us think she was dead. Thereâs more to it, of course, but that alone is unforgivable.â

âI want to be strongâ The otter now in human form gazed at her with determination. He had already made up his mind and was ready to not let anything get on his path.
âI wanna be able to protect you and Lumi if anything gets to happen. I canât keep being the small kid you guys have to protect. I wish to be strong like you and Kahra!â
Jellie flinched, as if sheâd been stung. Oh, poor Otti. She didnât even know what she could say to him. She didnât want him to have to do this, but she could hardly stop him.
âOh, Otti. I donât blame you, but....â She paused a moment. âYou know...youâre already strong, right?â
Not strong like her and Kahra, but that wasnât a kind of strength she would wish on him. Not Otti. Hell, she hadnât wanted it for Kahra, either.

Jellie frowned, the ends of her tendrils twitching a little bit in reaction. They really did have quite similar situations, after all.
âWeâre the same, then. Iâm also hunting someone. A traitor.â
She stopped, glanced around for a moment, and spotted a long piece of driftwood by the side of the road.Â
âYou should sit. You look like youâve been traveling for a long time.â

â i am a familiar, yeah . â a pause , before he finally stopped in his tracks . a few minutes couldnât hurt , although his brow did knit together at her question . talk about what ? the red sea would still be at large if samekichi didnât catch up to them , talking about it wouldnât do much of anything .
a breath escaped him . it certainly couldnât hurt . it might even ⌠help .
he turned to look at the stranger , evaluating her before speaking . â iâm going after someone who hurt my witch . sheâs at her home , safe , but that ⌠bastard is still out there . i canât rest until i finish him off . â
