I'm glad to know it's not considered sexual assault because of what you think. The term is defined as any sexual contact upon a person who is unwilling or unable to give consent, like having someone sit on top of you and tear off your clothes, but we can just throw that out the window because you don't like how people are responding to something.

Now let's make this clear: Nanami consented to a kiss to give some energy. She later asked him to stop because he was taking too much. Everything after that point was assault, and given that he ripped off her shirt and bra, it's not uncalled for people to consider it sexual. 

Was it out of character for Kirihito? Unfortunately, no. There was a lot of foreshadowing leading up to this point. His lack of care or consideration for the feelings of others has been made clear several times. There were moments when it seemed like this was changing for the better, such as when he chose to break the mirror to protect his human mother, but it looks like he still has a lot to learn.

His taking her energy wasn't just about being alive. It was about reveling in the sensation of dominating another living creature. He's done it before, it's not out of character, but it is shocking and people have a right to be surprised. Given how vague the scene was, it's not surprising people would wonder if there was more to it than what we saw. It's called a reaction, and people have a right to that. Trying to dictate how people should feel, or whether they should be reading something they're already emotionally invested in, is pointless because they're not going to stop.

Here's the thing, this is the second arc in a row that's dealt with sexual assault. It's not the first time it's appeared in this series, but people have been willing to read on because the story is good. But it's starting to get used as a trope. 

Does he care about her? Maybe. But that's one hell of a way to care about someone. Should Nanami have to put up with a person who does that just because they care about her? No! Should people be ok with these things? No! I'm not putting the feelings of the assailant above those of the victim. 

What should happen to Kirihito? He shouldn't be allowed to have that much power again. There should be greater consequences as well, but I'm leaving that up to the author to decide. I do think she'll make good on this, but I'm not surprised people have doubts. They are allowed to.

And no one's saying what Tomoe did was ok. Nice straw man defense. People were willing to forgive what he did because he stopped, Nanami made it clear his actions would not be tolerated, we had evidence that he would change for the better, and because people are still waiting it out to see if we get solid closure on that scene.

As for Mizuki, he spent ages trying to make up with the others, and ultimately became Nanami's familiar, a position in which she has absolute power over him. So yeah, I still think his behavior was crap, but I'm also willing to forgive it, considering the circumstances, which are different than those we're currently discussing.

Surprise: sometimes people keep reading something that shocks them because they're willing to have faith that there will be satisfying closure. Kind of like what a lot of people are debating to do right now. I suggest you leave them to it.

Have some news KH fandom: NANAMI WASN'T RAPED

I’m kind of upset, yes, but with all the reactions about that particular scene in ch.107.

Like, are you for real people? If you’re so schocked about this and want to stop reading this manga, then why you didn’t react in the same way when Tomoe tried to actually rape Nanami when she was in the past? What about Mizuki? He tried to take advantage of her at some point too.

You should know that I love these characters a lot but, contrary at the anime, this manga is not all pink and full of fluff and rainbows; KAMISAMA HAJIMEMASHITA’S BEEN PLAYING WITH HUGE/SHOCKING/DEPRESSING STUFF SINCE THE BEGINNING.

So, Kirihito did something shocking, yes, but he did not rape Nanami and her clothes were in place when he came to his sences. You need to remember that he is a demon and that he was dying, so he was kind of high when he was taking her energy so I’m not surprised with the way he was acting.

It was rude, yes. It was shocking, yes. But I don’t really think it was a sexual assault because Nanami consented that kiss, she wanted to help him and Kirihito wasn’t trying to sexually harrass her, he just wanted to live. Of course she didn’t deserve to be treated like that but Kirihito was out of his sences for god’s sake, he wasn’t groping her or marking her either, he was just taking her energy. She was weak in the end but he did not kill her, and he could have done that, but he didn’t because in the end he recognize her and you should have seen that he cares for her a lot.

So in the end, are you saying that Kirihito is a bad guy and deserves to be beaten into hell because of what he did? Are you saying that it’s ok for Tomoe to sexually attack at Nanami just because they’re the canon ship in this manga?

Please think about what kind of story is Kamisama Hajimemashita, because if you think that you only will be reading lovely and funny stories, then maybe you should actually drop this right now.

Well, This Leaves A Bad Taste In My Mouth: The "Metaphor" Of Sexual Assault In Kamisama Hajimemashita

I always suspected I’d eventually have to write a post about the representation and treatment of sexual assault in anime and manga, but for the life of me I never dreamed I’d have to write that post because of Kamisama Hajimemashita.  And yet here we are, ready to discuss a dearly-cherished series that is one of my favorites - and one that, lately, has left me challenged, conflicted, and more upset than I’d like to be over a manga. I thought for a long time about what I wanted to write.  I wanted to write about how fandom can use this as an opportunity to challenge rape culture rather than contribute to it.  I wanted to write about how dangerous it can be for even a very skilled mangaka to use sexual assault as a narrative device or a plot trope or even as a metaphor for something else.  I wanted to write about the dangers of victim-blaming. But all of those discussions, I suspect, are being had elsewhere, and it occurred to me anyway to write about something else instead: the way that sexual assault (again - even as a metaphor for something else) within an anime or a manga can change that series irrevocably, and can alter permanently the relationship between the series and the reader.
