Dear Hetalia Fandom,

So I am very sure many of you have seen posts where people are speaking out about how awful the old fandom was, and when the new season releases, we must make sure that new fans stay educated to not not be like the old fandom.

Please educate the new people older fans if they repeat the old fandoms mistakes.

This fandom is amazing and fun when everything is done rightfully. I remember falling in love with the fandom when I starting seeing people educate others on history, posts were full of diversity, Latin Hetalia arose (I am Hispanic so that made me extremely happy since there is not much Hispanic rep in anime), and I met people who were just so kind and wonderful to chat with! Let’s give a good experience to new fans. I am sure will have rough patches, but let us get through them maturely and calm.

And while though yes, at the end of the day this is just a fun show to watch, we need to be responsible. Respect ships, respect peoples head cannons, when in disagreement civilly talk about it, remember that this show is not serious, and PLEASE respect culture.

Some Resurgence Thoughts

1.) Fruk vs usuk drama. It’s done. If you dont like one or the other don’t read it. Don’t start shit. Don’t be an asshole. 

2.) Fandom characterisation has moved on for a lot of us. Don’t start drama. For my part: Arthur is no longer a sparkling anime twink. He’s a grumpy 2,000 year old alcoholic bilge rat. Matt’s not a ripped snapped lumberjack serial killer or a trembling beflanneled pastel virgin. Francis isn’t a rapist. 

3.) Maybe don’t insert random words in other languages into dialogue. Or write in accents. 

4.) Think about the stereotypes and history you’re using. Who benefits from you thinking about a group of people that way? Should you use it? Have you heard it used in a terrible way? Think before you post.  

4.) Maybe don’t write about current event’s or super contentious issues. holy fuck just dont.

I have sort of a mixed opinion, personally. I hope it's okay I add my 2 cents as this is an important topic to me as I imagine it is to most of us.

1) It's really jacked up that anyone would have an unconsentual medical procedure performed on them and a shame the story didn't address that. Granted, from what I know a lot was going on and Matt was not the actual main focus, plus he's terrible at talking about his problems most of the time but yeah that was messed up regardless of what it was.

2) I agree it's not realistic for him not to have at least a little pain or difficulty from the new stimulus, which would have been easy to write in simply by having him show signs of discomfort like sweating or holding his head. You could headcanon he did but yeah pretty sure the story really went bare minimum with the details of his experience. On the other hand, Matt hasn't been blind from birth and likely wouldn't suffer the way someone who was born blind would- that part of his brain for visual imput would be rusty but I'm not in total disbelief that he could get himself from one location to Foggy's apartment.

3) Matt should know the world he once knew has changed in appearance. No doubt he can smell the paint or hear construction when there's building remodeling for example. It could be a disappointment but the chances of him ever seeing anything new were pretty much zero- he might be more thankful for the opportunity than anything.

4) It's messed up to put pressure on someone with a condition to do something like get up out of a wheelchair, like they're broken and need to be fixed. On the other hand people in the disabled community are allowed to want treatment or cures- the point is that they should have the number one say in what happens because it's their body. If a person has been going to physical therapy and wants to walk at a ceremony as a personal goal that's okay because they want it. (It's totally fine if Lt. Dan wants to show what he can do with his new prosthetics.) As much as it's important to fight ableism by accepting people the way they are it's important to fight it by accepting when someone wants a change.

That's why I cringe a bit when people are upset over the fact Matt said on the show that if he had the chance he'd like to see the sky again. It's okay for Matt to be a character who would choose to see again. I'm absolutely all for him staying blind because we need representation of the blind community in media and it's still lacking to this day. Thing is to realistically represent the community there ought to be both characters who would choose to stay as they are (personally I think say Stick or Toph from Avatar would choose to stay as they are for example) and those who would be interested if medicine provided treatment. In the example from the show, Matt even says right before "I know I'm not supposed to" and that's because there's pressure from people- some who are ableist, some who have the same condition and have trouble understanding why someone would want treatment- to reject a cure. There's also the danger of people going the extreme opposite of trying to fix a person they see as broken to being so positive about the condition that they start seeing the condition more than the individual who happens to have it. "You know your boyfriend really loves you for you because he can't see your looks," for example.

I absolutely agree that Matt doesn't need to see Foggy. He's his most important person and looks are only a piece of who a person is. But I'd also argue that there's nothing wrong with Matt going, "Hey if I could be cured I'd go for it. If I only had a few minutes and I could see Foggy then I would want to." If a deaf kid wants to get an implant so they can hear then more power to them. And yes, it can be a beautiful moment when they get to hear their mother's voice for the first time. But it should be their choice and these things are not without their complications or physical pain. I think most people who ship the characters are thinking about how it's a moment of proof that Foggy is extremely significant to Matt rather than a belief Matt ought to be cured to specifically see Foggy in a grand gesture.

Bringing back the topic of non consented medical procedures... In the story this is from Matt states that he would like to see again but he rejects the offer from the evil!Tony Stark because he doesn't make deals with super villains. The fact he got those few minutes in a way he did not want to might have left him with mixed feelings. It's unfortunate the story did not leave room for a more emotionally nuanced portrayal.

Do you ever think about that one multiverse arc in the comics where Tony’s like evil for whatever reason and gives Matt his eyes back for a few hours to try to sway him and all Matt does is go to see Foggy and doesn’t even fucking tell him. Because I do. I think about it a lot.

I think about it occasionally.

(Unpopular opinion ahead)

But mostly, I think it’s fucked up beyond belief that Matt didn’t immediately have a breakdown at the additional stimuli and the fact that he probably wouldn’t have recognized a world that had changed so much since he was a child.

And I wonder sometimes if maybe seeing Foggy was actually very confusing for him, like he had probably built up an idea in his head of what Foggy was and when the visual did not match, it might have been really jarring and possibly upsetting.

Idk, anon. I get the romance here, and I understand the gesture, but I feel icky about the overall premise. It’s like.

Foggy’s insecurities often come from his body and there is a certain kind of security for him that comes with Matt who perceives his physicality in a very different fashion. And Matt’s own struggles about being super-powered and being blind and finding that balance between having his needs addressed and being infantilized also revolve around being perceived in a certain way by other people.

So it’s kind of fucked up to prioritize the visual in an intimate moment between them.

It’s more of an ableist, wish-fulfillment scenario, where an able-bodied reader thinks that the greatest demonstration of love (romantic or platonic) for a disabled character is to change their disability to do what they cannot or struggle to do for the sake of their partner.

It reminds me of those videos and moments where someone who uses a wheelchair or walker leaves it behind to walk across the stage for graduation or down the aisle for their wedding. That’s like, ableism at work. Those tools exist to help people. They’re not shameful. And the dismissal of them makes me uncomfortable.

So I don’t overly love this moment in the comics. I know that comics are a visual media, but I feel like the moment would have been equally powerful if Matt said ‘take this sight away from me’ and then went immediately to talk to Foggy afterwards. To maybe even tell him, ‘yes, I could see. But I didn’t want to see you, because I already know who you are to me and I have never needed to know you in any other way.”

So, nothing against you anon. I don’t think you were trying to even like, touch these ideas. These are just my personal feelings that’s all.

But I do think about MattFoggy daily and all of the little presents they give each other and how they annoy the shit out of each other but not having that would be a nightmare for both of them.

Can I watch a great film knowing the actresses in it were terrorized and mistreated the entire time? Can I watch a football game knowing that the players are getting brain injuries right before my eyes? Can I listen to my favorite albums anymore knowing that the singers were all beating their wives in between studio sessions? Can I eat at the new fancy taco place knowing when the building that used to be there got bulldozed eight families got kicked out of their homes so they could be replaced with condos and a chain restaurant? Can I wear the affordable clothes I bought downtown that were probably assembled in a sweatshop with child labor? Can I eat quinoa? Can I eat this burger? Can I drink this bottled water? Can I buy a car and drive to work because I’m sick of taking an hour each way on the subway? Whose bones do I stand on? Whose bones am I standing on right now?
